# Bonds: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

With that tank still holding the fuel and the motor not yet turned over, nearly every job needs only a drain, so leave the motor off. That result is determined in the minutes straight after filling up, rather than by the amount that went in. Throughout Bonds and the remainder of Lancashire, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and cleans it where it sits, whether at a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt.

Ring us before all else starts, so you will learn what follows next.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to do next

- Don't start it — and don't rely on it when it starts. Here is the bit drivers get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol engine fed diesel usually just cannot run, and so the motorist stops and the harm stops with them. A diesel fed petrol typically starts, ticks over and pulls away quite happily for a few miles. It is not okay. It's grinding the fuel system while you drive.

- Two tasks, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps the injection pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only manages the one. That is why the ignition remains off as well — flick it on and you often prime your system, and that's petrol leaving that tank for exactly those parts.

- Do not dilute it. Diesel added on top removes nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The grade makes no difference.

- A vehicle that hasn't shifted is the easiest one to sort out, so wait where you are if you reasonably can. Pulled up on the verge on Byerworth Lane North? Hazards on, then keep it there. An awkward place works for us better than a started diesel.

- Before you call, gather your whereabouts. Anything nearest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode that starts PR3 1 — that's what determines whether the technician arrives or circles.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Expect three queries — what got in, roughly how many litres, and whether the engine has been run. The responses settle whatever follows.

The drive in is what pushed weakened diesel through the pump. Standing still has pulled nothing. Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Golf, sitting outside Salwick all day, sits dormant in that tank while it waits. Phone us first — before the keys come out.

## Draining petrol from the diesel on a forecourt

It starts at the pump, mostly. Often enough it wraps up at one too.

We operate on station forecourts all the time, with the station's agreement, and so if you're still at Harrison Oils that is usually where this drain gets done.

At the forecourt, this is halted with your engine never started, and nowhere else manages that.

Everywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and driven to get there, which means fuel was sucked from your tank, through your filter then into your high-pressure pump. That is not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still deal with it where it sits. It does mean the fuel lines and the fuel filter need rinsing as well as your tank, and that is decided by the few seconds between reading the till receipt and reaching for your key.

The staff will usually help you wheel it clear of the pump so the next driver can get through. That is worth doing.

Cranking the car just for four vehicle lengths? Never.

## Areas our team reach around Bonds

The same runs take us to Garstang, Bowgreave, Bruna Hill, Nook and Catterall as well as Bonds, which is a village.

If yours is not on this list it doesn't mean we do not come — there are pages for most locations around Lancashire, and the ones listed above are just the nearest neighbours.

Call us and check instead of presuming, especially where you're on a border or anywhere the satnav struggles with.

This map is the area this page includes.

Your car doesn't need to move to us. We work over every bit of it — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Your diesel BMW 3 Series will have felt completely usual on the way back from St Mary and St Michael's Catholic Primary School, Garstang. They always do, and that is the snag with petrol in a diesel and not the other way round. Put diesel in a petrol vehicle and it generally won't run, and so the person stops and the wear stops with them. Put petrol in a diesel and it starts, ticks over and pulls away as though nothing has happened — all while the high-pressure fuel pump does its work without the lubrication your fuel is meant to be giving. Nothing tells you, as from behind the wheel there's nothing to warn you about. Phone with roughly how far you went and how hard you worked it; the second answer matters more than the first.

## Stranded at the roadside in Bonds

The chance to pull over somewhere sensible doesn't come to everybody.

Set off, then noticed? Ended up along the verge on Bonds Lane, or parked in some lay-by with your hazards flashing? That's a normal call here. Not a rare one.

Clear of the vehicle if it isn't sensible to wait inside, beside it when it is.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws the mixture further into the system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why the motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere handier.

However difficult the location, it is no trouble for us to get to it, and that is much better for your car than pressing on.

Your Audi A4 stays where it is in the car park at Royal Oak Hotel for the whole job, which generally goes like this. First we ask what was put in, about how much, and whether the motor has run since, given that most of the work rests on those answers. That tank is emptied of the polluted mixture, the lines are rinsed, and the filter comes off if it is a replaceable one. With fresh diesel in and your system primed, the car is started and checked, and once it is running correctly you drive away.

## Driven it already? Pull in, then see below

This is where the M6 comes in, under a mile from Bonds.

A loss of power, a rough idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they appear, instead of a clean stop — and a misfuelled diesel will often take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

Pull off at the first safe exit, switch off, and don't restart the vehicle to move it.

Suppose the worst of that on a long run. Anything close to the under 10 miles to the nearest city, and the mixture has been through the fuel filter, through your pump, through your injectors. Tell us when you ring. What our engineers bring differs.

## Bonds itself

Bonds is a village situated on the riverside in Lancashire, with a relatively low elevation of 22 metres. Bonds lies near the city of Preston, approximately 9.8 miles away, and is also close to other nearby places such as Garstang and Bowgreave. Bonds has a population of around 1237 people, predominantly living in detached housing. Bonds is located in the North West region of England, about 198.6 miles from London.

## The call-out around Bonds, step by step

- The responses change the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting: what got in, how much of that, and if the engine has run.

- Your tank is emptied of everything.

- Fuel lines are flushed through and your filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the system that started any of this.

- Bleeding your system follows, once new diesel is in.

- Once it is turned on, we check it runs properly on new diesel.

That has the car ready to drive away.

There is no need for a workshop at any stage, because the work is all done where your car is, and when it's caught quickly, lasting damage is very rare.

About as well as this goes, once your engine has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and your diesel Mercedes C-Class parked by St Mary & St Michael hardly two streets on. Phone us, then leave the car off. A short hop does truly help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, so the fuel filter and the pump have had thinned fuel through them — hence purging the lines rather than only clearing your tank.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Bonds is a separate matter

The issue is not the same, though the opening instruction is — don't start it — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

Weakened diesel, and no protection left for your fuel system that depends on it. That is petrol.

AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it brings rust and residue instead.

Both are ours. There's a separate Bonds page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

## Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Bonds

One number wouldn't be honest here, because this is not one job. These are the things that shift it:

- This is the key one: whether the motor has been started, or driven.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, set against how much your tank can hold.

- Which went in: unleaded or AdBlue.

- Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there's safe for a van.

Tell us your vehicle, the amount and whether it has run, and you will get a straight answer instead of a range.

Not urgent, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then works.

That sluggishness is the fuel failing to build pressure fully, not your engine packing up — and with no warning for it, vehicles in that position normally get driven again before anybody phones. Please don't. A few streets is all it got: throttle gone dead, idle turned lumpy, and a diesel Vauxhall Insignia now sitting close to St Thomas's. Turn the vehicle off then call us.

## Bonds motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

## I'm on a forecourt around Bonds. Can you drain it on the spot?

Much of what our technicians do gets done nowhere else. So yes.

Often, provided the site agrees: another forecourt nearby, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that location is something our engineers answer on the spot.

## A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Proportion settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run.

Five litres into a nearly dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been drawn right through, or has it not?

## I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and leave it off.

Driving shifts the issue along — out of that tank, into the pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really useful thing left to you is not restarting the car.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out correctly, draining and cleaning is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one, which is another good reason to leave the car switched off.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

Two-stroke oil solves a separate problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No.

Later on? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

There's no need to take it to a franchised dealer, as our engineers drain and clean the car wherever it is.

## Standing next to it?

Turned off is the way it remains.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting it later on.

Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. People fear this far more than they need to.

Clearing misfuelled vehicles, Bonds and the rest of Lancashire, wherever they are. Kerbside. Forecourt. Home.
