# Bowerham: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

With your tank still holding the fuel and the motor not yet started, almost every job requires only a drain, so keep the motor off. That result is determined in the minutes straight after the fill-up, and not by the amount that went in. Across Bowerham and the remainder of Lancashire, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and cleans it where it stands, whether at a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt.

One ring our way is plenty: we will explain what comes next. Try that first.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to try next

- Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will usually fail to run at all, so the person stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it idles, it drives off — fine for a few miles. Most people have that muddled, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So never fire it up. And if started, do not trust it: your fuel system is wearing as you drive.

- Leave the ignition alone too. Diesel performs two jobs: it ignites, and before it burns it greases the high-pressure pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. Switching your ignition on is frequently enough to prime the system, which carries that petrol out of that tank and into exactly those parts.

- That advice assumes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It does not. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you end with is a bigger tank of the same mixture. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.

- Wait where you are if you sensibly can. A vehicle that has not moved is the quickest one to sort, and we'd sooner travel to an awkward spot than have it started. If you are parked on the verge on Chester Place, turn your hazards on then keep it there.

- Check where you are before ringing. A postcode that starts LA1 4, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise our van circles instead of arriving.

- Call 0333 366 0103. Expect three queries — what got in, approximately how much, and whether the car has been turned over. The replies shape whatever happens next.

Quarter past eight, a hurried fill on the road in, and it dawns on you close to eleven — by that point your diesel Volkswagen Golf has been parked at Lancaster for three hours. Phone us then leave the vehicle exactly where it stands. The run in is the thing that is key here, as diesel performs two tasks on its way through an engine: it combusts, and before it combusts it greases that injection pump and those injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. So those few miles were driven with the pump working on a fluid that had given up most of the protection it is designed around — which is why the question our engineers ask is how far you travelled, not how long your car has been sitting.

## Can petrol be drained from your diesel at the forecourt?

Pumps are where this work usually kicks off, and where a fair chunk of that closes.

If you are still at the forecourt at BP, that is typically where this drain happens — we work on station forecourts all the time, with the station's consent.

Before the engine has fired — a garage is the single location this ends up spotted.

Fuel sucked out of that tank and through the fuel filter, right to your high-pressure pump, is what occurs when the motor is switched on and the vehicle is driven to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in your filter and your lines as well as the tank. That's still not a disaster, and our engineers sort it out where the car is. What determines it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after the till receipt was checked.

Staff will usually help out pushing it away from the petrol pump, which lets the next customer get through. Take the assistance.

Four car lengths is not worth a restart.

## Will our engineers reach your part of Bowerham?

Bowerham is a residential suburb, so we head out to it and to the areas around it on the same rounds: Newlands, The Greaves, Golgotha, Primrose and Hala.

We still come. The places above are only the nearest neighbours, and a page is there for the majority of places across Lancashire, so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage.

Assuming is the thing to avoid, especially on a boundary or anywhere the satnav gets lost. Phone and enquire.

Use this map for the area included here.

Your car doesn't need to come to us. We work throughout all of it — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

## Stuck by the kerbside anywhere around Bowerham?

Not everyone gets the opportunity to pull in anywhere safe.

A common call for us instead of an odd one: noticed after setting off, ended up by the verge of Bowerham Road or at a lay-by with the hazards on.

Whether you stay by your car or stand clear of it turns on if sitting in it feels sensible.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls that blend further into your fuel system — and oblige it often will, which is why the engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere better.

A technician heading to a difficult location is no problem for us, and it's far better for the car than carrying on.

What we will ask about is if that drive there was brief and chilly, since that's where petrol is least likely to burn correctly — and anything that doesn't burn can get past the rings then into the sump. Right up to the moment someone drives it home, a diesel BMW 1 Series parked in the parking area at Bowerham Hotel with a tank full of petrol in it is an easy job. Nothing worsens as it waits, and so park the vehicle there overnight then phone us first thing.

## So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel over a few miles

This is where the M6 comes in, under a mile from Bowerham.

Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will often do both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a clean stop. Power drains away, your idle turns lumpy, and there may be some smoke.

Get off at the first sensible junction, switch off, and don't start the vehicle to reposition.

Long drive? Anything near the under 3 miles to the nearest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that arrived at by the petrol. Say that on the phone, because it alters what goes in our van.

A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically: the fuel has to hold pressure, not only burn. Thin that fuel and pressure which should build then stay built escapes past gaps instead, leaving the motor a poorer, later, less even delivery than it was built round. Petrol weakens diesel, and diesel has to be viscous enough to seal the tightly fitted parts it flows through — that's the entire process. It accounts for the normal Winchester Field and Nature Area call too: a diesel Citroen C3 that travelled out without complaint and came back down on power, lumpy at idle, possibly smoking a little. None of which is your engine failing, and that is the bit worth hearing. The fuel has stopped behaving like diesel. Put the fuel right and it stops.

## Bowerham itself

Bowerham is a suburban area located on the outskirts of Lancaster in Lancashire, sitting at an elevation of 66 metres near the coast. Bowerham is characterized by its predominantly semi-detached housing stock and is situated close to nearby places such as Newlands and The Greaves. Bowerham is a relatively small area, with a population of approximately 8131 residents, and is close to the city centre of Lancaster, being only 1.2 miles away.

## Once our engineers reach you in Bowerham: what follows

- Three things get established before any quote — your fuel that went in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.

- We clear that tank of all the contaminated fuel.

- Lines rinsed, filter cleared. Whatever remains afterwards isn't the thing that created the problem.

- New diesel goes in, and then your system gets primed.

- The motor is fired up and tested to be sure it runs correctly on clean diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to pull away.

We do all of it wherever the vehicle has come to a stop, which means it never has to go to a workshop, and if it has been caught soon, it is very unusual for there to be long-term damage.

Rarely the problem, the spot. On-street is the usual place our engineers work, and a cramped parking spot is far preferable to a motor that has been driven somewhere more convenient. What does help, when you ring from near Trinity URC Community Centre, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether a van can stand alongside without blocking the road, and whether anything has run since you filled up. Then your Kia Sportage gets drained, the fuel filter changed where a usable one exists, the lines purged and fresh fuel put through the entire system — since by now the worst of it is in your lines, not the tank.

## Bowerham AdBlue removal is a separate matter

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first step is unchanged — your engine stays off — while the issue under it's a different one altogether.

Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and takes away the lubrication your fuel system depends on.

Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings rust and residue.

We handle both, and AdBlue removal around Bowerham has its own page with the full story — including why it's often the more significant of the two.

Hire car? Company car? Ring them before us. Some agreements want the firm to authorise the work, and that is much faster dealt with up front than later. Then phone us about the Skoda Superb, the diesel one, close to Trinity United Reformed Church. Don't worry that you cannot say how full the tank was — nearly nobody can two days into a motor, and it is something our engineers check there. The reason for asking: damage from petrol in a diesel is a matter of ratio. A couple of litres in a nearly empty tank make a far stronger mixture than in a full one, and petrol is built to resist the very thing a diesel needs of it, which is igniting when compressed. Stronger blend, more knocking, more smoke, flatter throttle.

## What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs in Bowerham

What changes the figure is set out below, because the job is not one job and we can't truthfully put a single number on this page.

- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, set against how much your tank takes.

- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever was put in.

- Whether our van can sensibly reach the car and work on it, which depends on where the vehicle is.

Tell us what the car is, how much went in, and whether the motor has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range.

For the vehicle at home that's going nowhere and isn't pressing, is fine too.

## Bowerham drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Bowerham?

Plenty of what our technicians do takes place nowhere else. So yes.

Our technicians work at JET and the other forecourts around town routinely, with the owner's agreement — tell us which one you're at when you phone and we will tell you whether we can work there.

## A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It rests on the proportion rather than the litres, and much more on whether your engine has run.

A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different scenarios, certainly. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether the system has had that blend pulled through it.

## I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Switch off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop.

Driving is what moves the trouble from the tank into your pump and injectors — but it is recoverable a lot more commonly than motorists fear, and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It's not a modification, so a drain and flush carried out correctly doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty.

A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

## Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

What petrol has diluted isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a different fault. So no.

The pump still has to live with it, as the tank still has petrol in it later.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

No. We drain and clean your car wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a main dealer.

## Still with your car?

Leave the engine switched off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting it afterwards.

Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. Drivers fear this much more than they need to.

At the roadside, on the forecourt or at home — on-site fuel draining in Bowerham and throughout Lancashire.
