# Bramley: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not started the engine yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing more is nearly always what a car needs while the fuel is still in the tank and the motor has not yet run, which is why it's the next few minutes that count, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel comes to the vehicle wherever it has ended up in Bramley or the remainder of Hampshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and cleans it there.

Just one ring to us is sufficient: we can show you what follows next. Make that first.

## The first five steps: petrol in a diesel

- Never start it. Started regardless? Then never depend on it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle generally can't run, and so the person stops and the damage halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It pulls away fine, for several miles. People get that reversed. It is not okay — the fuel system is wearing every mile you cover.

- Leave your ignition alone also. Diesel performs two jobs: it ignites, and before it burns it lubricates your high-pressure fuel pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. Flicking the ignition on is commonly all it takes to prime your system, which pulls this petrol out of your tank and into exactly those components.

- Topping up removes nothing. It hands you a larger tank of the same mix, because a diesel fuel system won't tolerate petrol by percentage in the way that advice presumes — so never add diesel on top to thin it. Grade is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.

- Sit tight if it's sensible to. Hazards on, motor off, leave the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on The Street, anywhere — a difficult place for us trumps a started motor, and nothing is easier for us to sort out than a vehicle that never shifted.

- Check where you are before ringing. A postcode that starts RG26 5, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise our van circles instead of turning up.

- Three details settle the whole job: the liquid you tipped in, the rough amount of it, and whether anything has been running since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.

The drive in is what pushed weakened diesel through the pump. Sitting still has drawn nothing. Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Tiguan, parked outside Bramley (Hants) all day, rests inert in the tank whilst it waits. Call us first — before your keys come out.

## Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

A big chunk of this job ends up finished at a pump, because that's where it mostly starts.

We operate on station forecourts regularly, with the station's agreement, and so if you are still at BP that is generally where the drain gets done.

No place other than a forecourt can the mistake be spotted with your motor still cold.

The few seconds between seeing the till receipt and reaching for the keys settle how much requires rinsing. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was started and moved to get there, so fuel was pulled from the tank, through the fuel filter and into your high-pressure pump. That means your lines and the filter need rinsing as well as that tank. It is not a calamity, and our engineers can still deal with it where the vehicle is.

The staff will generally happily wheel the car away from the pump so the next motorist can get by. That's worth doing.

Shifting the car four lengths does not warrant starting the engine.

Every start primes that fuel system and pulls more of that mix out of that tank and towards your pump — which is why a car shunted twice into a roomier spot has gradually become a bigger job than one left exactly where it stopped. So when our engineers cannot work next to the diesel Skoda Octavia, our technicians shift it without starting it. None of that is fuss about a few seconds of running. Car parks like the one outside M&S Foodhall we work in all the time, and the fuel is seldom the complicated part: that bay is. Motors either side, a trolley shelter behind, occasionally a height limit at the way in determining whether a van reaches you at all. Tell us how hemmed in you are, and which way the vehicle faces.

## Bramley plus the villages near it

Bramley is a rural village, and we head out to it and to anywhere around it on the same trips: Bramley Green, Bramley Corner, Cufaude, Fair Oak Green and Latchmere Green.

If yours isn't on the list that does not mean we never come — there are dedicated pages for the majority of places in Hampshire, and the ones named above are just the immediate neighbours.

Guessing is the thing to skip, above all on a border or somewhere your satnav gets lost. Call us to ask.

That map shows the patch this page spans.

The car never needs to travel to us. We operate over the lot — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Twenty to nine outside Bramley Church of England Primary School, already late, and the till receipt in your hand shows unleaded. Hazards on, engine off, phone us. Three miles in your Peugeot 308 seems like nothing, but a diesel pump delivers fuel to demand — while a rushed morning dash demands plenty.

## Roadside call-outs in Bramley

A chance to pull in anywhere suitable doesn't come to everyone.

A normal call for us rather than an unusual one: realised after setting off, landed along the verge beside Bramley Lane or at a lay-by with the hazards flashing.

Clear of the car while it's not sensible to wait there, beside it if it is.

Do not fire up the engine to limp it somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging the mix further into your fuel system.

We'll send the van to an awkward spot without any bother, and for the vehicle that is a lot better than carrying on.

## A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

under 5 miles from Bramley, the M3 is what counts now.

Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a clean stop. Power falls away, the idle gets lumpy, and there may be some smoke.

Pull off at the next sensible junction, turn off, and do not restart it to reposition.

It alters what our technicians bring, so tell us when you phone: on a longer drive — anything close to the under 25 miles to the closest city — assume the contamination has been through the filter, your pump and your injectors.

Never drive it home to buy yourself time. You already have it: nothing gets worse whilst the car sits, since a diesel BMW 1 Series parked at Clift Meadow is doing none of what it did on the way there. The pump has stopped turning.

## Where is Bramley?

Bramley is a village in Hampshire, situated inland at an elevation of around 60 metres, with Bramley being close to the larger city of Winchester. Bramley has a population of approximately 1712 residents, with Bramley comprising predominantly detached housing. Bramley is surrounded by smaller settlements such as Bramley Green and Bramley Corner, and is also near Cufaude.

## What we do when our technicians reach you around Bramley

- The replies shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before pricing: what got in, how much of it, and if the motor has run.

- Your tank is cleared of everything.

- Lines rinsed, filter cleared. Whatever remains afterwards isn't the thing that caused the trouble.

- Our technicians put fresh diesel in and bleed the fuel system.

- Our engineers start the engine and make sure it runs correctly on clean diesel.

From there, you are ready to pull away.

Everything is done where your car is, so it never has to be taken to a garage, and when it has been noticed early, lasting damage is very rare.

Pulled off the forecourt, read your receipt, and left the diesel Vauxhall Astra up by Farriers Field Open Space a few hundred yards later? That is about as well as this goes once the engine has turned. Phone us and leave it off. The short distance really helps, but it was still a start and a drive, and so diluted fuel has got to your filter and the pump — which is why we purge your lines rather than only clearing your tank.

## Bramley AdBlue removal is a distinct problem

Do not start it: that first rule stands whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the problem itself.

Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and takes away the lubrication your fuel system relies on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus deposits.

Frequently the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the detail lives on its own Bramley page. Both are ours to deal with.

## Bramley pricing for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

Our engineers cannot put one figure on this page truthfully, because this job is not one job. What shifts it:

- This is the key one: whether the engine has been started, or driven.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, judged against how much that tank takes.

- Which got in: unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can our van get to it and work there safely?

Tell us what the car is, how much went in, and whether your motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range.

For the car at home that's going nowhere and is not pressing, is fine too.

## Petrol in diesel: frequent queries in Bramley

## At a petrol station in Bramley, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes — forecourts are where a fair portion of this takes place.

Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Tesco is somewhere we are regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you'll hear whether working there's possible.

## Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

Ratio settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run.

Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mixture been drawn right through, or has it not?

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. Now what?

Pull over somewhere safe, turn off, and leave it off.

Driving is what takes the trouble from the tank into the pump and injectors — but it's recoverable much more regularly than motorists expect, and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart the vehicle.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out correctly, clearing and flushing is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one, which is another reason to leave the car turned off.

## Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a separate problem and it doesn't replace what petrol has diluted.

That tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and your pump still has to cope with it.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

There is no need to take it to a dealership, because we drain and flush your car wherever it is.

## Still with the vehicle?

Switched off is how it stays.

Switch it off somewhere safe and leave it off, if you have already driven it.

Cold, parked, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. Motorists fear this much more than they need to.

Call-out fuel draining around Bramley and across Hampshire — at the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home.
