# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Brawdy?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled cars where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, all over Brawdy and the rest of Pembrokeshire. The first thing to do is not to start the engine. When the engine has not yet turned over and the fuel is still inside that tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it requires, and the next few minutes decide that, not how much was put in.

Call us before anything else starts, and you'll learn what follows from there.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to try next

- As you drive, the pump and the injectors suffer. That's why you never crank it, and why you never trust it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel in particular — the part most people get wrong — is that it drives away happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine generally can't run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the wear with them. This one lets you drive on.

- Diesel combusts, and before it ignites it greases — the high-pressure pump, those injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the car's ignition off also: turning it on is usually all it takes to prime your system, and priming carries petrol from the tank into precisely those parts.

- Don't put diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system won't tolerate petrol by percentage as that guidance presumes, and topping up removes nothing — it merely leaves you a fuller tank of the same blend. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.

- Stay still if it's wise to. Hazards on, motor off, leave the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on A487, anywhere — a tricky spot for us is better than a started motor, and nothing is quicker for us to handle than a car that never shifted.

- Keep your whereabouts prepared before you call. A postcode that starts SA62 6 and whatever is next to you with a sign on it is the difference between the van arriving and our van circling.

- What got in, about how much, plus if your car has fired — these three answers shape the whole job. Ring 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

## On the forecourt: clearing petrol from the diesel

It starts at a pump, mostly. Quite often it ends there as well.

If you're still at the forecourt at the nearest petrol station, that is normally where this drain takes place — we work on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the station's consent.

Before your engine has fired — the forecourt is the only place this is caught.

The few seconds between seeing your receipt and going for your key decide how much requires flushing. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was switched on and driven to get there, so fuel was drawn from the tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure pump. That means the lines and your filter require cleaning as well as the tank. It is not a calamity, and our technicians can still sort it out where the vehicle stands.

The staff will usually happily wheel it out from the pump so the next driver can get by. It is worth doing.

Shifting it four spaces does not merit firing it.

Tell us this much and we can work with it: a diesel Volkswagen Tiguan, some litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, shut off outside Bay View Stores now. Time elapsed is not the thing our technicians need. Fuel drawn by your pump is.

## Brawdy plus the towns near it

The same runs bring us to Penycwm, Rhydygele, Llandeloy, Llanddinog and Lochvane besides Brawdy, which is a coastal village.

Not on the list? That means nothing. The places above are just the nearest few, and most towns around Pembrokeshire have a page of their own somewhere on the site.

Guessing is the thing to avoid, especially on a boundary or anywhere the satnav goes wrong. Call us to check.

That map shows the ground the page covers.

We work by the road, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks throughout all of that, and the car doesn't need to come to us.

A diesel pump supplies fuel on demand, and a hurried morning run demands plenty — so three miles in the BMW 3 Series seems like nothing and is not. Twenty to nine at the gates of the local primary school, already late, a receipt in your hand saying unleaded: hazards on, engine off, call us.

## Kerbside breakdowns around Brawdy

Not everybody finds a safe spot to pull in.

Set off, then noticed? Finished up by the verge on Newgale Hill, or parked in some lay-by with your hazards flashing? That is a routine call here. Not an unusual one.

Whether you stay with the motor or move clear of it turns on whether staying in it seems wise.

It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that's the problem: fire it up to reach somewhere safer and the mixture goes further into the fuel system with every mile covered.

A technician heading to a difficult place is no problem for us, and it's far better for the vehicle than carrying on.

A diesel Peugeot 308 parked in the car park outside the pub in the village with a tank of petrol in it is an easy job, right up till someone drives it home. Leave the vehicle overnight then call us next morning. Nothing worsens as it sits. What we'll want to know is if that run there was short and chilly, since that is where petrol is slowest to burn correctly — and anything that does not burn can slip past the piston rings then into the sump.

## So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel over a couple of miles

Here is where your M4 counts, under 50 miles out of Brawdy.

Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will often manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a clean stop. Power ebbs away, the idle turns uneven, and there may be some smoke.

Pull off at the first safe junction, turn off, and never start the car to move it.

Suppose the worst of it on a long trip. Anything close to the under 10 miles to the nearest city, and the mixture has been through the fuel filter, through your pump, through the fuel injectors. Say so when you ring. What we bring alters.

## Where is Brawdy?

Brawdy is a small coastal village in Pembrokeshire, situated near the western tip of Wales, with Brawdy being close to the historic city of St Davids. Brawdy sits at an elevation of around 103 metres, overlooking the coastline and surrounding countryside. Brawdy is characterised by its semi-detached housing and quiet, rural atmosphere, with nearby villages including Penycwm and Llandeloy.

## The visit around Brawdy, step by step

- The replies alter the work, which is why we ask before giving a price: what was put in, how much of that, and whether your engine has run.

- Out flows the contaminated fuel.

- What is left in your system shouldn't be what created the trouble, and so the lines get cleaned and the filter cleared.

- Your system gets primed, on new diesel.

- Our engineers turn it on and check it runs properly on new diesel.

That leaves your car ready to set off.

Permanent damage is very uncommon when it has been spotted soon, and because all of it is done where the car is, it never has to be taken to a garage.

Why we're blunt about not driving on: the pump rests upstream of the injectors, and so whatever a worn pump loses passes downstream with your fuel. Leave the Audi A6 near Pointz Castle and phone us.

## Brawdy AdBlue removal is a separate problem

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first rule is unchanged — the motor stays off — whereas this issue beneath it's a separate one altogether.

The protection a fuel system relies on gets taken away by petrol, which dilutes your diesel.

Corrosion and build-up are what a diesel tank gets instead, since AdBlue is urea in water.

AdBlue removal in Brawdy has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it is frequently the more serious of the two. Our engineers deal with both.

Hire car? Company car? Ring them before us. Some contracts want the firm to sign off the work, and that is much faster dealt with up front than after that. Then ring us about the Ford Kuga, the diesel one, near Tre-Maen-Hir Standing Stone. Don't worry that you can't say how full your tank was — nearly nobody can two days into a vehicle, and it is something we work out on the spot. The reason for asking: harm from petrol in a diesel is a matter of share. A few litres in an almost empty tank make a far stronger mix than in a full one, and petrol is built to resist the very thing a diesel needs of it, which is igniting when compressed. Stronger blend, more rattling, more smoke, flatter throttle.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Brawdy?

Our technicians can't put one number on this page frankly, as this job isn't one job. What changes it:

- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, weighed against how much your tank can hold.

- Whether it is petrol or AdBlue.

- Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there is safe for a van.

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much got in, and if your engine has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range.

Car at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is good for that.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Brawdy drivers

## Fuel drains on a Brawdy petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a large share of this gets done.

We visit Texaco and the other forecourts around town regularly, with the owner's agreement — tell us which one you're at when you ring and we will tell you whether our technicians can work there.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Whether the motor has run matters a lot more, though the ratio matters too, instead of the litres.

Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is required is whether that blend has been pulled through the fuel system.

## I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and leave it off.

It's salvageable a lot more frequently than motorists expect, even though driving is what moves the problem from that tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, emptying and purging is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it.

A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

What petrol has diluted is not restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a separate issue. So no.

Your tank still has petrol in it after that, and the pump still has to cope with it.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

You don't need one. The car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.

## Waiting next to it?

That engine remains off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting the car later on.

This is recoverable from much more frequently than people fear, and a still, cold vehicle is the best position to be in.
