# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Brent

If you have not fired up the motor yet, do not. A fuel drain and nothing more is almost always what a motor requires while the fuel is still sitting in that tank and the motor has not yet run, which is why it's the following few minutes that matter, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel travels to the vehicle wherever it has stopped in Brent or the remainder of Cornwall, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and cleans it there.

Ring us and we will tell you what comes from here before you try anything else.

## Your next five steps: petrol in a diesel

- Don't crank it. Started all the same? Then never believe it. Diesel in a petrol motor normally won't run, and so the driver stops and the harm ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It drives off normally, for a couple of miles. People get that confused. It isn't all right — your fuel system is wearing every mile you cover.

- Two things, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure fuel pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only handles the one. That is why your ignition is left off also — flick it on and you often prime your system, and that is petrol leaving your tank for just those parts.

- That guidance supposes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It does not. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you end with is a fuller tank of the same blend. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.

- Sit tight if it is wise to. Hazards on, ignition off, keep the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Eddystone View, anywhere — an awkward place for us trumps a started diesel, and nothing is simpler for us to sort than a vehicle that never moved.

- Know where you are before ringing. A postcode beginning PL13 2, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the van circles instead of showing up.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Say what went in, approximately how much, and also whether the engine has fired. These three details determine your whole call-out.

## Can petrol be drained out of a diesel on the forecourt?

A fair share of this job is done at the pump, as that's where it mostly begins.

If you are still at the forecourt at Texaco, that's usually where this drain gets done — our technicians work on station forecourts routinely, with the site's agreement.

A filling station is the single place this is spotted before your engine has fired.

Fuel drawn out of that tank and through the fuel filter, right to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what happens when the engine is started and your car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in the fuel filter and the lines as well as the tank. That's still not a disaster, and our engineers sort it out where your car sits. What decides it is whether the ignition was turned in the seconds after the till receipt was checked.

Roll the car out of the way if the attendants volunteer, and they usually will. The next motorist gets through the pump, and that's worth doing.

Four car lengths isn't worth a restart.

Diesel Renault Clio. A few litres of unleaded. Driven a couple of miles. Shut off now, outside Spar. That is the enquiry our technicians want, as the question beneath it's about amount through the pump instead of hours on the clock.

## Areas we cover near Brent

Being a coastal area, Brent has a steady visit, whilst the areas round about come along on the same run: Carey Park and Polperro, Crumplehorn and Porthallow, Talland.

If yours is not on this list it does not mean we don't come — there are dedicated pages for most locations around Cornwall, and the ones listed above are simply the immediate neighbours.

Presuming is the habit to avoid, above all on the border or somewhere your phone struggles. Phone and check.

This map outlines the area the page covers.

All of that is territory our engineers work: a roadside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You don't bring your vehicle anywhere.

## Brent: broken down where you stopped

Some drivers have no suitable spot to stop at all.

Hazards going in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge beside Sand Hill because you realised after setting off — our technicians take that call often enough that it is the normal kind.

Clear of the vehicle when it isn't safe to wait there, with it when it is.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws that blend further into the fuel system — and oblige it usually will, which is why the engine does not get restarted to limp somewhere better.

Our van driving to a tricky place is no bother for us, and it is much better for your car than pressing on.

A diesel Peugeot 3008 sitting in the parking area outside The Blue Peter Inn carrying a tank full of petrol in it is a straightforward job, right up until someone drives it home. Leave it there overnight and phone us next morning. Nothing worsens while it stands. What we will ask is whether the trip there was brief and chilly, because that's where petrol is least likely to burn properly — and anything that doesn't burn can work past the piston rings and into the oil.

## Run it already? Pull over, then see below

This is where the local M5 comes in — under 50 miles away from Brent.

It will often get you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it's smoke, an uneven idle and power ebbing away — not a tidy stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Come off at the first safe exit, turn off, and never start it to reposition.

Assume the worst of it on a long trip. Anything approaching the under 25 miles to the closest city, and the mixture has been through the fuel filter, through your pump, through the injectors. Say so when you ring. What our technicians bring changes.

## Where is Brent?

Brent is a small coastal locality in Cornwall, situated near the popular tourist destinations of Polperro and Crumplehorn. Brent sits at an elevation of 109 metres, overlooking the coastline of south-east Cornwall, with Plymouth just 16 miles away. Brent is characterised by its predominantly detached housing stock, reflecting its appeal as a residential area. Brent is one of several small communities in the area, including nearby Carey Park.

## What our technicians do when we reach you in Brent

- Three things get established before any quote — your fuel that was put in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.

- That tank gets cleared completely.

- Lines flushed, filter cleared. Whatever is left later on is not the thing that created the trouble.

- Our engineers pour new diesel in and bleed the fuel system.

- Our engineers turn it on and confirm it runs correctly on clean diesel.

That leaves your car ready to drive away.

All of it is done where the car is, so it never has to go to a garage, and when it has been noticed quickly, permanent damage is very unusual.

Off the forecourt, receipt read, a couple of hundred yards, left by Polperro Heritage Museum of Smuggling & Fishing. For a diesel Vauxhall Astra whose engine has turned, that's about the best version there is. Phone us, then let it stand with the ignition alone. Short helps, truly — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and the filter has had thinned fuel through it, and so has the pump. Which is why the lines get flushed and not just the tank cleared.

## Brent AdBlue removal is a distinct problem

If what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first instruction is the same — don't start the vehicle — yet the problem is not.

Petrol weakens your diesel and strips the protection your fuel system relies on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus deposits.

AdBlue removal around Brent has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it's frequently the more significant of the two. We deal with both.

A throttle gone limp, white smoke, a lumpy idle, clattering: that's a misfuelled diesel Citroen C3 telling you what's wrong. Don't start the car to find a better place — turn off where you have stopped, by Downend or anywhere else.

## Brent prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

What moves the figure is laid out below, because this job isn't one job and our engineers can't honestly put a single price on this page.

- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.

- Which went in: petrol or AdBlue.

- Whether our van can safely reach your car and work on it, which rests on where your car is.

A clear answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the amount, and if it has run.

For the vehicle at home that's going nowhere and isn't urgent, is fine too.

A person certain will tell you to drain the vehicle and put clean diesel in. Only half right, that. Try it on a diesel Ford Fiesta near The Polperro Pilchard and your engine will start — which is precisely why it sounds like sense. Here's the trouble: there is petrol left in the fuel filter and the feed lines, and the first thing the engine does is pull it back through your pump again. Draining a tank achieves nothing about fuel that already left that tank. Phone us. The system gets flushed, your filter comes off where there's one worth removing, and that's what separates a fixed motor from one that simply starts.

## Petrol in diesel: common questions around Brent

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Brent?

Yes, and it's where a fair part of this work takes place.

Tell us which one you are at when you ring and we will tell you whether we can work there. With the owner's consent our technicians work at another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts nearby all the time.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Ratio decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run.

What determines how much work is needed is if that mix has been drawn through the fuel system — since although five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one, either way that's the query.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Stop somewhere safe, switch off, then keep the car off.

It is fixable a lot more commonly than motorists assume, even though driving is what takes the problem from your tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain and flush done to a correct standard, which is no modification at all.

What's likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the motor to stay off.

## Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a different issue and it does not restore what petrol has thinned.

The tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and the pump still has to cope with it.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever the vehicle is, our technicians drain and flush it there, so a visit to the main dealer does not come into it.

## Standing next to it?

Keep it shut off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting it later on.

A stationary, cold car is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from much more regularly than drivers assume.

Across Cornwall and in Brent: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
