# Bridge of Earn: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled cars where they sit, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, across Bridge of Earn and the remainder of Perth and Kinross. The first thing to do is not to turn on your engine. While the motor has not yet turned over and the fuel is still sitting in your tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it needs, and the coming few minutes decide that, not how much went in.

Ring us so our team shall explain what follows from here before you try any more.

## Now what? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

- Don't crank it — and do not believe it if it does start. Here is the part motorists get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol engine given diesel usually just cannot run, so the driver stops and the harm halts with them. A diesel given petrol usually starts, ticks over and drives away just fine for several miles. It's not fine. It's wearing out the fuel system whenever you drive.

- Two tasks, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure fuel pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only does the one. Which is why the car's ignition stays off also — turn it on and you often prime your system, and that is petrol exiting that tank for precisely those components.

- Don't dilute it. Diesel poured on top takes out nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The octane makes no difference.

- Wait where you are if you sensibly can. A vehicle that has not shifted is the easiest one to handle, and we'd rather come to a difficult spot than have it started. If you are parked on the verge on Main Street, switch the hazards on and keep the car there.

- Check where you are before phoning. A postcode beginning PH2 9, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than turning up.

- Call 0333 366 0103. Tell us what got in, about how many litres, and also whether the engine has fired. Those three details shape the whole job.

## Can petrol be drained out of your diesel at the forecourt?

It kicks off at a forecourt, generally. Quite often the work wraps up on site as well.

The drain normally takes place right there. Still on the forecourt at Shell? Given the station's agreement, that's somewhere we work, and often.

The forecourt is the only place the mistake gets halted before the engine has fired.

Our engineers can still sort it out where it sits, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been started and moved there, and that pulled fuel through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump, right from your tank. None of that is a catastrophe, though the flush then has to go past that tank to your lines and your filter, and the few seconds between checking the till receipt and reaching for the keys are what settle that.

Staff will generally help out pushing it out from the petrol pump, which lets the next customer get through. Accept the offer.

Starting the car to shift four vehicle lengths isn't.

The awkward part is that bay, not your fuel. Cars either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and now and then a height limit on the way in that decides whether a van can get to you at all — so when you call from a car park like the one outside Tesco, say how much space there is about you and which way round the car is. Those we attend often. Should there be no room to work beside your diesel BMW 3 Series, it gets moved with the engine off, and not out of fuss over a handful of seconds of running: priming occurs at every start, more of the mixture departs the tank for the pump, and two shunts into a better bay have silently made a harder job of what was merely a car sitting still.

## Coverage around Bridge of Earn

Kintillo, Dron, Craigend, Tarsappie, Scoonieburn — each of them on the runs that take us out to Bridge of Earn as well, a village.

We still come. The places above are only the immediate neighbours, and a page is there for the majority of locations around Perth and Kinross, so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage.

On the boundary, or anywhere your phone struggles with? Phone to ask rather than assuming.

Check our map for the ground covered on this page.

Kerbside, forecourt, driveway, car park: the lot is territory we work on, and none of that needs your car to come to us.

A diesel pump supplies fuel to demand, and a rushed morning run demands plenty — so three miles in the Peugeot 308 feels like nothing and is not. Twenty to nine outside the local primary school, already late, a receipt in your hand showing unleaded: hazards on, engine off, phone us.

## Stopped on the kerb anywhere around Bridge of Earn?

The chance to pull in anywhere sensible doesn't come to everybody.

If you noticed after setting off and landed along the verge of Side Street, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazards on, that's a normal call for us rather than an odd one.

Whether you remain beside the vehicle or step away from it depends on if sitting nearby seems safe.

Never restart the motor to nurse the vehicle somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing the blend further into the fuel system.

Carrying on does your car far more harm than our van coming out to a tricky place, and that's no trouble for us.

A diesel Audi A4 parked in the parking area by The Earn Hotel carrying a tank of petrol in it is a straightforward job, right up till somebody takes it home. Leave it there overnight then ring us next morning. Nothing deteriorates while it stands. What our technicians will ask is whether that run there was short and cold, as that is where petrol is least able to burn properly — and whatever does not burn can work past the rings and into the engine oil.

## So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel over a few miles

The local M90 is the one that counts now, and lies under a mile from Bridge of Earn.

Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will often do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a tidy stop. Power drains away, the idle gets lumpy, and there may be smoke.

Take the next exit that is sensible, stop there, and don't start the vehicle to move it.

Long run? Anything near the under 5 miles to the closest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it reached by the petrol. Say that on the phone, because it changes what goes in our van.

## All about Bridge of Earn

Bridge of Earn is a small village situated on the banks of the River Earn in Perth and Kinross, with a low elevation of around 12 metres. Bridge of Earn has a mix of old and new housing, but predominantly features detached homes. Bridge of Earn is located near several other small communities, including Kintillo, Dron, and Craigend, and is close to the city of Perth, which is about 3.5 miles away.

## What happens when our engineers get to you in Bridge of Earn

- We find out what got in, how much, and whether your engine has run. The answers alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing.

- Out flows the tainted fuel.

- Fuel lines are rinsed through and the fuel filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the system that created any of this.

- Bleeding the system follows, once new diesel is in.

- Our technicians turn it on and check it runs properly on clean diesel.

From there, you're ready to drive away.

Permanent damage is very unusual when it has been caught quickly, and as all of it is done where the vehicle is, it never has to be taken to a garage.

Why we're firm about not driving on: the pump sits upstream of the fuel injectors, and so whatever a wearing pump sheds moves onward with the fuel. Leave the Mercedes E-Class close to Bridge of Earn Tennis Club then phone us.

## Bridge of Earn AdBlue removal is a different problem

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening instruction is unchanged — your engine stays off — whereas the problem beneath it is a different one altogether.

Weakened diesel, and no lubrication left for the fuel system that relies on it. That's petrol.

AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it brings rust and residue instead.

We deal with both, and AdBlue removal around Bridge of Earn has its own page with the details — including why it's often the more serious of the two.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Bridge of Earn?

What shifts the price is set out below, as this job is not one job and our technicians can't honestly put a single figure on this page.

- This is the big one: whether the motor has been started, or driven.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.

- The sort of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.

- Whether a van can sensibly get to your vehicle and work on it, which depends on where your car is.

Tell us the car, the amount and if it has run, and you'll get a firm answer rather than a range.

For the car at home that is going nowhere and isn't urgent, works too.

The fuel filter, the lines, your pump and its rail: that is where that mixture is once a diesel has run, and it doesn't come back out with the tank contents. So your tank is not where most of the trouble waits by this point, and a diesel Skoda Superb that made it close to Bridge of Earn Institute needs the system purged rather than drained.

## Petrol in diesel: common questions in Bridge of Earn

## Fuel drains on a Bridge of Earn petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a large share of this gets done.

Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Morrisons is somewhere we're often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you'll hear if working there's possible.

## Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Ratio is, and much more than either, it counts if anything has been run.

Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is needed is whether that mixture has been sucked through the system.

## I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and leave it off.

Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the trouble out of your tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains recoverable much more regularly than people assume.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It's not an alteration, so a drain then flush carried out properly does not void a manufacturer's warranty.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one, which is another good reason to leave the car switched off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. It belongs to a distinct problem from a different era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind replaces.

Petrol remains in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no respite from it.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You do not need one. Your car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

## Still with your vehicle?

Never turn it on again.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere sensible, switch off, then let the car stay that way.

Cold, still, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. Drivers fear this far more than they need to.
