# Brierfield: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

With the tank still carrying the fuel and the engine not yet run, almost every job needs only a drain, so keep your engine off. That result is decided in the minutes right after filling up, rather than by the amount that got in. All over Brierfield and the remainder of Lancashire, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and flushes it where it sits, whether at a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt.

Our technicians will explain what the following move will be. Ring us — it happens ahead of all else.

## What next? Petrol in a diesel, in order

- Give a petrol engine diesel and it will usually fail to run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the damage. Give a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it idles, it pulls away — all right for several miles. Most people have that reversed, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So don't fire it up. And if started, do not believe it: your fuel system is wearing while you drive.

- Diesel ignites, and before it burns it greases — the injection pump, its injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the car's ignition be as well: flicking it on is commonly sufficient to prime your system, and priming moves petrol from the tank into just those parts.

- Do not weaken it. Diesel poured on top gets rid of nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The grade makes no difference.

- Wait where you are if you safely can. A motor that has not shifted is the simplest one to handle, and we would much rather come to an odd spot than have it started. If you are pulled up on the verge on Halifax Road, put the hazards on then keep the car there.

- Get your position prepared before you phone. A postcode beginning BB9 5 and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it is the difference between the van arriving and our van circling.

- Three replies determine the entire call-out: the stuff you poured in, the rough measure of it, plus whether it has been turning since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Passat, sitting at the nearest station since breakfast? The wait has cost you nothing — fuel sitting in a tank is dormant. It was the run in that drew weakened diesel through the pump. Call us before you drive it.

## Can petrol be drained from your diesel at a forecourt?

Pumps are where the work mostly begins, and where a fair share of that finishes.

The drain generally gets done right there. Still on the forecourt at Texaco? Given the site's consent, that is somewhere we work, and regularly.

Before your motor has started — the forecourt is the only place the mistake ends up caught.

The few seconds between reading the till receipt and going for the keys decide how much needs rinsing. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was fired up and moved to get there, so fuel was sucked from that tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the lines and your filter require cleaning as well as that tank. It is not a calamity, and our technicians can still put it right where the car sits.

The attendants will generally help you wheel the vehicle away from the petrol pump so the next driver can get by. That's worth doing.

Firing it to move four vehicle lengths is not.

Tell us this much and our technicians can work with it: a diesel BMW 3 Series, a few litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, switched off at Lidl now. Time gone by is not the thing we need. Fuel drawn by the pump is.

## Brierfield plus the towns beside it

Brierfield is a riverside town, so our vans get out to the town and to the areas by it on the same rounds: Waterside, Reedley, Little Marsden, Lomeshaye and Whitefield.

If yours is not on the list it does not mean we never come — there are separate pages for most locations in Lancashire, and the ones listed above are just the closest neighbours.

Guessing is the habit to resist, particularly on a border or somewhere a satnav goes wrong. Ring us to check.

The patch this page includes appears on the map.

The lot is ground we work: a roadside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You do not drive your vehicle anywhere.

## Roadside stops across Brierfield

A chance to pull in somewhere safe doesn't fall to everyone.

Hazards flashing in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge on Burnley Road because you worked it out after setting off — we take that call so often that it's the usual kind.

Whether you sit with the motor or move clear of it turns on if sitting there seems wise.

Don't start it up to reach a nicer location. It will go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws that mix deeper into your fuel system.

However awkward the location, it is no trouble for us to come to it, and that's a lot better for your car than driving on.

This is what a job in the car park by The Prairie usually looks like. We arrive at the vehicle, ask what got in, about how much, and whether the motor has run since — those three answers determine much of the work. Then the polluted mix comes out of that tank, the fuel lines get cleaned, and the filter comes off where your Audi A4 has a serviceable one. Clean diesel goes in and the system is bled. Then our engineers fire it up, confirm it runs properly, and you set off.

## Already run it? Petrol in a diesel over some miles

under a mile out of Brierfield, your M65 is what matters now.

It will often take you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it is some smoke, an uneven idle and power draining away — not a neat stop. Misfilled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Do not start it to move it. Pull off at the next sensible exit then switch off.

On a longer trip — anything close to the under 25 miles to the closest city — take it the mixture has been through your filter, your pump and your injectors, and say so when you call. It changes what our technicians bring.

## Brierfield itself

Brierfield is a town situated in Lancashire, on the riverside in the North West of England, with an elevation of 157 metres. Brierfield is located near several smaller communities, including Waterside, Reedley, and Little Marsden, and is approximately 19 miles from Preston. Brierfield has a population of around 19,103 people and is characterised by predominantly terraced housing. Brierfield is also relatively distant from London, at around 183 miles away.

## What comes next when our engineers reach you around Brierfield

- The responses shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing: what got in, how much of it, and whether the motor has run.

- Our technicians empty your tank of all the contaminated fuel.

- Our engineers rinse your fuel lines and clean the fuel filter, and so what's left in the fuel system is not what created the issue.

- The fuel system gets bled, on clean diesel.

- After it is started, we check it runs properly on new diesel.

After that it is ready to pull away.

Everything is done where your car is, so it never needs to go to a garage, and when it has been caught early, lasting damage is very unusual.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Brierfield is a different job

The fault isn't the same, though the first instruction is — never crank it — if what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol.

Diluted diesel, and no protection left for your fuel system that relies on it. That's petrol.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus build-up.

Both are ours. There's a separate Brierfield page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Hire car? Company car? Ring them before us. Some contracts want the firm to sign off the work, and that is much faster dealt with up front than later. Then give us a call about the Peugeot 208, the diesel one, close to Junction 12. Do not worry that you cannot say how full that tank was — almost no one can two days into a motor, and it is something we establish there. The reason for asking: damage from petrol in a diesel is a matter of ratio. A few litres in a nearly empty tank make a far stronger blend than in a full one, and petrol is built to resist the very thing a diesel needs of it, which is igniting when compressed. Stronger mix, more knocking, more smoke, flatter throttle.

## Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Brierfield

One price would not be honest here, as this isn't one job. These are the things that change it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.

- Wrong fuel in, against what that tank holds — that ratio.

- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever got in.

- Where is it? And can a technician reach it and work there sensibly?

Tell us what your car is, how much went in, and whether your motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range.

For the car at home that is going nowhere and is not time-critical, is fine too.

It got a couple of streets and stopped. The throttle went limp, the idle turned uneven, and the diesel Renault Captur is now sitting close to Pendle Village. That softness is the fuel failing to build pressure properly instead of your engine giving up — and since there is no warning light for it, vehicles in that position normally get driven once more before somebody phones. Please don't. Switch it off and phone us.

## Questions our technicians hear about petrol in diesel in Brierfield

## Fuel drains on a Brierfield petrol station forecourt

A large share of this work takes place there, so yes.

We work at Esso and the other forecourts around town regularly, with the site's agreement — tell us which one you're at when you phone and we will tell you whether we can work there.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Proportion is, and much more than either, it counts if anything has been run.

Five litres in an almost empty tank is a different matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is needed is whether that blend has been pulled through the system.

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. Now what?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then turn off and keep it off.

Driving moves the trouble along — out of that tank, into your pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really useful thing left to you isn't restarting the vehicle.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out correctly isn't an alteration and doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty.

What is likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the motor to stay off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

What petrol has weakened is not restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a distinct fault. So no.

Petrol remains in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no break from it.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

Not at all. Our technicians drain and clean the car wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a dealership.

## Standing next to it?

Don't switch it on again.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting the car afterwards.

Cold, parked, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. Motorists fear this a lot more than they need to.

Call-out fuel draining in Brierfield and across Lancashire — at the roadside, on the forecourt or at home.
