# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Brigstock? Don't Start It

If you have not turned on the motor yet, don't. A drain and nothing more is nearly always what a vehicle needs while the fuel is still inside the tank and the engine has not been started, which is why it is the coming few minutes that count, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel comes to the car wherever it has come to rest in Brigstock or the rest of Northamptonshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and flushes it there.

Call us before all else begins, so you'll see what follows next.

## What next? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

- As you drive, your pump and the fuel injectors suffer. That's why you do not fire it up, and why you do not believe it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel in particular — the part most people get wrong — is that it drives away fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor normally will not run at all, which stops the person and stops the damage with them. This one lets you keep going.

- Flicking the ignition on usually primes the system, and priming is what pulls petrol out of the tank then into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps oiled on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol manages the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave the car's ignition off.

- Don't water down it. Diesel poured on top gets rid of nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The octane makes no difference.

- Our team would rather drive to a difficult spot than have it started — so if you reasonably can, sit tight. Nothing is simpler to handle than a car that has never moved. On the verge on High Street, that means hazards on and leave it.

- Before you phone, work out your position. Anything next to you with a name on it, plus a postcode beginning NN14 3 — that's what settles whether our van arrives or circles.

- Three answers shape your whole job: the stuff you put in, the approximate volume of it, and if anything has been turning since. The line is 0333 366 0103.

## Can petrol be drained out of your diesel at a forecourt?

Pumps are where this job mostly kicks off, and where a good portion of that finishes.

If you are still at the forecourt at Jet, that's generally where the drain takes place — we operate on garage forecourts regularly, with the owner's consent.

Before your engine has fired — a garage is the one spot it gets spotted.

The few seconds between checking the receipt and reaching for the keys settle how much requires rinsing. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was switched on and driven to get there, so fuel was drawn from your tank, through the filter then into your high-pressure pump. That means your lines and the filter require cleaning as well as that tank. It's not a disaster, and our engineers can still sort it out where the vehicle sits.

The staff will usually help you move the vehicle away from the pump so the next motorist can get by. That is worth doing.

Rolling it four bays does not justify firing the motor.

Diesel Nissan Qashqai. A few litres of unleaded. Driven a couple of miles. Switched off now, outside The Co-operative Food. That is the phone call our technicians want, because the real question underneath it's about quantity through your pump instead of hours on the clock.

## Parts we cover around Brigstock

Stanion, Sudborough, Weldon, Little Oakley, Upper Benefield — every one of these on our trips that carry us over to Brigstock as well, a village.

Not on the list? It means nothing. The names above are just the nearest few, and the majority of towns across Northamptonshire have a page of their own elsewhere on the site.

Assuming is the mistake to skip, especially on a boundary or somewhere your satnav goes wrong. Call us and ask.

That map outlines the area this page spans.

Our technicians work roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks across all of it, and your car doesn't need to move to us.

Twenty to nine by Brigstock Latham's Church of England Primary School, already late, and the receipt in your hand shows unleaded. Hazards on, motor off, phone us. Three miles in the Ford Focus seems like nothing, but a diesel pump meters fuel on demand — while a rushed morning run needs plenty.

## Brigstock: stuck wherever you parked

The chance to pull in somewhere suitable doesn't fall to everybody.

If you worked it out after setting off and finished up by the verge beside Back Lane, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights going, that's a routine call for us rather than an odd one.

Out of the vehicle when it isn't wise to be there, beside it if it is.

Do not fire up the motor to nurse the vehicle somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling that blend further into the system.

However awkward the location, it's no trouble for us to get to it, and that is a lot better for the vehicle than pressing on.

This is what a job in the car park outside The Olde Three Cocks typically looks like. Our technicians arrive at the vehicle, ask what was put in, approximately how much, and whether your engine has run since — those three replies decide most of the work. Then the polluted mixture comes out of your tank, the fuel lines get flushed, and the filter comes off where your Mercedes C-Class has a replaceable one. New diesel goes in and your system is primed. Then our technicians fire it up, confirm it runs properly, and you drive away.

## A few miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

The local Great North Road is the one which matters now, and it sits under 15 miles from Brigstock.

A drop in power, an uneven idle, smoke: those are the signs when they come, rather than a tidy stop — and a misfilled diesel will often get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.

Don't restart it to move it. Get off at the next sensible exit and turn off.

It affects what our technicians bring, so mention it when you phone: on a longer drive — anything approaching the under 25 miles to the nearest city — assume the mixture has been through the fuel filter, the pump and the injectors.

Nothing is getting worse while it sits. Whatever your diesel Vauxhall Astra did on the way to Brigstock Pocket Park, it is doing none of it now: your pump is not turning. So take your time — but don't drive the car home to buy yourself any.

## Brigstock itself

Brigstock is a village in Northamptonshire, situated on the banks of the River Nene at an elevation of around 64 metres. Brigstock lies within the East Midlands region, approximately 68.9 miles north of London and 17.3 miles south of Peterborough. Brigstock has a mix of housing types, but detached homes are predominant, and the village is surrounded by nearby places such as Stanion, Sudborough, and Weldon.

## What happens when our technicians get to you around Brigstock

- Our technicians ask first, price after. What was put in? How much? Has your motor run? Those replies shape what the work really is.

- Our technicians empty the tank of all the contaminated fuel.

- What is left in the fuel system shouldn't be what created the trouble, and so the fuel lines get rinsed and your filter cleared.

- We pour new diesel in and bleed the fuel system.

- It is run with fresh diesel in it, and we make sure that it is running correctly.

From there, you are ready to drive away.

There's no need to go to a garage at any point, as the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it is spotted quickly, permanent damage is very rare.

## Brigstock AdBlue removal is a separate matter

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening step is unchanged — the engine stays off — while the fault beneath it is a distinct one altogether.

Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and takes away the lubrication the system relies on.

Rust and build-up are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, because AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Both are ours. There's a separate Brigstock page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

Rattling? Uneven idle? White smoke, throttle gone limp? That is your wrongly fuelled Kia Sportage, a diesel, saying what's wrong with it. Stop wherever you happen to be, maybe by Brigstock United Reformed Church, and leave the restarting alone.

## What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs around Brigstock

One number would not be honest here, since this isn't one job. These are the things that shift it:

- This is the main one: whether the engine has been run, or driven.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, compared with how much your tank can hold.

- AdBlue or petrol, whichever was put in.

- Where your car is, and whether our van can sensibly reach and work on it.

Tell us what the car is, how much got in, and if the engine has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range.

If it isn't urgent — your car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

## Brigstock drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## I'm on a forecourt in Brigstock. Can you drain the vehicle here?

Yes, and it is where a fair portion of this work takes place.

Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like BP is somewhere we're frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you will hear whether working there is possible.

## Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

It hinges on the ratio instead of the litres, and much more on whether your motor has run.

What determines how much work is needed is if that mix has been drawn through the system — since although five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one, either way that's the question.

## Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What then?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and keep it off.

Driving takes the issue along — out of that tank, into your pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really valuable thing left to you isn't restarting it.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, draining and flushing is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it.

Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a different problem and it does not replace what petrol has weakened.

The tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and the pump still has to live with it.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

You do not need one. The vehicle is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.

## Waiting next to it?

The engine stays off.

If you have already driven the car, pull in somewhere safe, turn it off and leave it off.

This is recoverable from much more frequently than people expect, and a parked, cold vehicle is the best position to be in.

Emptying wrongly fuelled vehicles, Brigstock and the rest of Northamptonshire, wherever they are. Kerbside. Forecourt. Home.
