# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Broadbridge Heath

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled cars where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, throughout Broadbridge Heath and the rest of West Sussex. The very first thing to do is not to fire up your engine. When the motor has not turned over and the fuel is still inside the tank, a fuel drain is almost always all it requires, and the following few minutes settle that, not how much got in.

Phone so our technicians shall show you what follows from here before you attempt much else.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to do first

- Don't fire it up — and do not believe it if it does start. Here is the bit drivers have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol engine filled with diesel normally just won't run, and so the person stops and the wear ends with them. A diesel given petrol normally starts, idles and pulls away perfectly well for a few miles. It isn't all right. It's eating into the fuel system whenever you drive.

- Diesel combusts, and before it ignites it protects — that injection pump, the injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the car's ignition off as well: turning it on is commonly all it takes to prime your system, and priming moves petrol from your tank into precisely those components.

- That advice assumes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you end with is a bigger tank of the same mixture. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.

- A motor that hasn't moved is the simplest one to handle, so stay where you are if you safely can. Stopped on the verge on Warnham Road? Hazards on, then keep the vehicle there. A difficult location works for us better than a started motor.

- Find out where you are before calling. A postcode starting RH12 3, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the van circles rather than arriving.

- Call 0333 366 0103. Tell us what was put in, approximately how many litres, and also whether the motor has started. Those three facts settle the entire job.

How many miles you travelled is what our technicians care about, not how long the car has been sitting — and here is why. Diesel does two jobs on its way through the engine: it burns, and before burning it greases the high-pressure pump and those injectors. Petrol manages the first only. So a quick refuel on the trip in, it dawning on you at about eleven, and a diesel Volkswagen Golf standing outside Christs Hospital since quarter past eight means those few miles were done with the pump running on a liquid stripped of much of its protection. Phone and keep the car precisely where it stands.

## Removing petrol from a diesel at the forecourt

Most of this work starts at a pump, so a large chunk of it ends up done on site.

If you are still on the forecourt at Tesco, that's usually where the drain happens — we work on station forecourts all the time, with the site's consent.

A forecourt is the single spot the mistake is spotted before your engine has fired.

Anywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was switched on and moved to get there, which means fuel was sucked from the tank, through your filter and into your high-pressure pump. That's not a disaster, and we can still sort it out where it stands. It does mean the fuel lines and the fuel filter need rinsing as well as your tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between reading the receipt and reaching for the key.

The attendants will usually offer to roll it clear of the petrol pump so the next motorist can get past. That's worth doing.

Cranking it to shift four vehicle lengths is not.

Diesel Renault Megane. Some litres of unleaded. Done a couple of miles. Shut off now, at The Co-operative Food. That's the phone call our technicians like, because the real question under it is about amount through your pump not hours on the clock.

## Will we cover your end of Broadbridge Heath?

These same journeys get us to Rapkyns, Strood Green, Warnham, Tower Hill and The Common along with Broadbridge Heath, which is a village.

Not on this list? That tells you nothing. The places above are just the nearest few, and most locations in West Sussex have a page of their own somewhere on this site.

On a border, or somewhere a satnav gets wrong? Phone and enquire instead of guessing.

Look at this map for the ground included on this page.

Roadside, forecourt, private drive, car park: all of that is territory our engineers work on, and none of it requires your vehicle to travel to us.

## Stuck at the kerbside around Broadbridge Heath

A chance to stop anywhere suitable does not fall to everybody.

A routine call for us and not an unusual one: noticed after setting off, ended up on the verge on Vinall Gardens or in a lay-by with your hazards flashing.

Whether you remain by the motor or stand away from it rests on if being in it is safe.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls the mixture further into the fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why your motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere better.

Carrying on causes the vehicle far more harm than our van heading out to an inconvenient spot, and that's no problem for us.

Here is what a job in the car park outside Shelley Arms typically looks like. Our engineers get to the vehicle, ask what got in, about how much, and whether your engine has run since — these three replies decide much of the work. Then the tainted blend comes out of that tank, the fuel lines get flushed, and the fuel filter comes off where your BMW 3 Series has a replaceable one. New diesel goes in and the system is bled. Then we start the engine, check it runs smoothly, and you drive away.

## Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

under 10 miles from Broadbridge Heath, your M23 is what matters here.

Lost power, an uneven idle, smoke: those are the signs when they appear, rather than a tidy stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

Take the first exit that is safe, stop there, and do not start it to move it.

Assume the worst of that on a long run. Anything close to the under 25 miles to the nearest city, and the mixture has been through the fuel filter, through your pump, through the fuel injectors. Tell us when you ring. What our engineers bring changes.

Here is the whole process. Diesel needs enough body to seal the fine clearances it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That's it. Which accounts for the normal The Green call — a diesel Nissan Qashqai, out there without complaint and back down on power, uneven at idle, possibly a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, so your fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; diluted, it escapes past those tolerances rather than building, and delivery comes poorer, later, less even than the motor was engineered around. Not a failing engine, though. Fuel that has stopped behaving like diesel. Put that right and it stops.

## Broadbridge Heath itself

Broadbridge Heath is a village in West Sussex, situated on the banks of the River Arun at an elevation of around 38 metres. Broadbridge Heath has a mix of housing types, but terraced homes are particularly prevalent, and the village is close to nearby places such as Rapkyns, Strood Green, and Warnham. Broadbridge Heath is located near the city of Brighton and Hove, approximately 19.6 miles away, and is also within commuting distance of London, which is around 31.8 miles to the north.

## Once we get to you around Broadbridge Heath: what we do

- Three things get asked before any price — the fuel that was put in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.

- Away flows the tainted mixture.

- Lines rinsed, filter cleaned. Whatever remains later isn't the thing that started the issue.

- New diesel goes in, and then your system gets bled.

- We turn it on and check it runs properly on fresh diesel.

At that point it is ready to pull away.

There's no need for a garage at any point, since the work is all done where your car is, and when it is caught early, permanent damage is very unusual.

## Broadbridge Heath AdBlue removal is a separate matter

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening step is unchanged — your motor remains off — while the problem beneath it's a different one altogether.

Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and removes the protection the fuel system relies on.

Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes corrosion and deposits.

Both are ours. There's a separate Broadbridge Heath page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

## Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Broadbridge Heath

Our technicians cannot put one number on this page frankly, because this job isn't one job. What moves it:

- This is the main one: whether your engine has been run, or driven.

- Wrong fuel in, against what your tank holds — that ratio.

- Whether it is petrol or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can our van get to it and work there safely?

A firm answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the amount, and whether it has run.

For the car at home that is going nowhere and isn't time-critical, works too.

It got a few streets and stopped. The throttle went limp, your idle turned uneven, and the diesel Citroen C3 is now sitting close to St. John's Church. That deadness is the fuel failing to build pressure properly rather than your engine giving up — and since there's no warning for it, motors in that position generally get driven again before anybody rings. Don't. Switch it off then ring us.

## Petrol in diesel: common queries in Broadbridge Heath

## Fuel drains on a Broadbridge Heath petrol station forecourt

A big share of this work happens there, so yes.

Our engineers visit Shell and the other forecourts around town regularly, with the site's consent — tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you whether we can work there.

## A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It rests on the ratio instead of the litres, and far more on whether your engine has run.

A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct scenarios, definitely. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if the system has had that mix drawn through it.

## I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Switch off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop.

It's fixable far more commonly than people expect, even though driving is what moves the issue from your tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, clearing and purging is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it.

A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. It belongs to a different problem from a separate era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind replaces.

Your pump still has to cope with it, since the tank still has petrol in it later.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

You do not need one. The car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a main dealer.

## Waiting next to it?

The motor stays off.

Turn it off somewhere sensible and leave it off, if you have already driven it.

Cold and stationary, a vehicle is in the best place available — and motorists fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.
