# What Happens Now: Petrol in a Diesel Car in Broadfield

Pause, and leave the motor off — not on, and not for a second to move it.

Drained and flushed, right where it is: that's usually all an unrun diesel with petrol in it needs. Whether it remains that simple depends on the minutes ahead far more than on everything else.

From now on, step by step, for anywhere around Broadfield:

## Engine off: minute one with petrol in a diesel

In this order, all before everything else:

- The ignition off, keys out. Switched on, the ignition can prime the system — and priming is what draws petrol out of your tank towards the parts it damages.

- Topping up with diesel seems like it thins the problem. It does not: nothing comes out, and the tank simply carries more of the same.

- Visibility comes first near moving traffic: switch the hazard lights on, and only then deal with anything else.

- Off the pump by hand. On a forecourt, get the staff to help you push the car away from the pump. Don't crank it to shift it, however short the way.

- Keep the receipt. It says which fuel was put in and about how much, which is the first thing we'll ask.

On the M23, under a mile from Broadfield, the next exit is the place to leave the vehicle; elsewhere, the first safe spot to stop. Do not press on to the services. Then go back to stage one.

## The fork in each Broadfield fuel drain: has it run yet?

Everything after this stage depends on one answer.

If it has never been started:

- Nowhere but that tank: that is where the petrol yet is.

- A drain and flush, on the spot, is usually the whole job.

- Step one counts for exactly this reason: it's the best spot to be in.

Run at all, even for a second:

- From the tank, through your filter, into the fuel lines: that's how far the petrol has travelled.

- A longer run carries it right through to the high-pressure pump and your injectors.

- The further it went, the larger the job — your lines, the filter, and now and then more besides.

Petrol does not lubricate. Diesel does, protecting the high-pressure pump and injectors as it flows through, which is why the line falls where it does.

A tank of petrol, left still, hurts nothing.

Pump that petrol, though, and it wears the very parts that move it.

## Broadfield, petrol in a diesel: have these prepared before you call

Whether the van circles or finds you depends on a little preparation.

- RH11 9 plus the rest of the postcode makes the ideal way to start telling us where you are.

- Wherever you have pulled up, the road's name is useful — whether that's Pelham Drive or somewhere else — and so does the name of a car park.

- Name a car park by what it serves — the one outside The Co-operative Food, for example — and it's much easier to find.

- Make and model of the car, and the fact it is a diesel.

- Petrol or AdBlue? Tell us which. They are separate jobs, and AdBlue has its own Broadfield page.

- About how much — in litres from the receipt, or by how long the nozzle stayed in.

- Whether it has run. And if it has, how far plus how hard.

- Sort who has the vehicle before our engineers arrive: some hire or company contracts want the owner to authorise this work, and doing it faster beforehand.

Then call 0333 366 0103. If it can wait — your car is at home and going nowhere — works as well.

## Whilst you wait for a fuel drain in Broadfield

The wait is where well-meant help does the harm. Stick to these.

- Where the vehicle has stopped decides where you wait. Exposed: away from it, away from the traffic. Sensible: with it. Either way, safety ahead of the car.

- A helpful passer-by doesn't start it. Nor does anybody wanting to check it still does the trick, or moving it a couple of yards.

- Anything from your boot, oil made for two-strokes or injector cleaner: no additive removes the petrol.

- No DIY draining. Siphoning petrol into a can at the roadside is risky, and it leaves your fuel that has already gone beyond the tank.

- Leave your ignition off — the windows and the radio too.

## Step by step: your fuel drain when the van gets there

- The quote comes after three questions, not before them — what was put in, how much, and whether it has run — because those replies set this job.

- Out of that tank comes the tainted blend: that tank is emptied.

- If it ran, the lines are holding petrol that has moved beyond your tank — so they are purged.

- Where the vehicle has a workable filter, it's replaced; otherwise, cleared.

- Bleeding the system comes after fresh diesel is in.

- The start-up. With clean diesel in and the system primed, it is fired up and checked to confirm it runs smoothly.

We stay until it is running on new diesel.

The car goes back to normal use at once, and long-term damage is very uncommon when it has been noticed quickly.

## Broadfield, after your fuel drain: back on the road

- Started on fresh diesel, it needs nothing unusual of you. Simply drive normally.

- Give the first miles your attention. Smoke showing, a warning light coming on, your idle going lumpy or your throttle stumbling: pull over and call us back.

- The work may come up later with a hire company, an insurer or a fleet manager. Keep the documents.

- The handle's colour isn't the guide to go by next time — the label on the pump is.
