# Bromley Heath: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled cars where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, across Bromley Heath and the remainder of Gloucestershire. The very first thing to do is not to turn on the engine. When the motor has not yet been started and the petrol is still sitting in the tank, a tank drain is almost always all it needs, and the coming few minutes decide that, not how much got in.

Our engineers will tell you what the next stage is. Contact us — it happens ahead of all else.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to try now

- Give a petrol motor diesel and it will usually fail to run at all, so the driver stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it ticks over, it moves off — fine enough for a few miles. People have that backwards, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So don't crank it. And if started, don't trust it: that fuel system is wearing down as you drive.

- Leave your ignition alone as well. Diesel has two roles: it burns, and before it combusts it protects your high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors. Petrol handles the first but not the second. Turning your ignition on is commonly sufficient to prime the system, which pulls this petrol out of your tank then into exactly those components.

- Never dilute it. Diesel put on top removes nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The type makes no difference.

- Stay put if it's wise to. Hazards on, ignition off, leave the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on A4174, anywhere — an odd place for us beats a started engine, and nothing is quicker for us to sort than a vehicle that never shifted.

- The van arriving rather than circling turns on two things: a postcode starting BS16 6, and whatever is next to you with a label on it. Have both prepared before you phone.

- Call 0333 366 0103. Let us know what got in, about how many litres, and whether your car has started. Those three details determine the whole visit.

## Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel

A big part of this work is done at the pump, because that's where it often kicks off.

Still at Shell? Then that's generally where it takes place. Garage forecourts are routine for us, with the agreement of the station.

Before your engine has run — a forecourt is the only place the mistake ends up caught.

Anywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and driven to get there, which means fuel was sucked from the tank, through your filter then into your high-pressure pump. That is not a calamity, and we can still deal with it where it is. It does mean your lines and your filter need flushing as well as that tank, and that is decided by the few seconds between checking your receipt and going for the key.

Wheel the car out of the way if the attendants suggest it, and they generally will. The next driver gets by the petrol pump, and that's worth doing.

Starting it just for four vehicle lengths? Never.

We're in car parks like the one outside Co-op Food often, and it's hardly ever the fuel that complicates them. It's that bay. Vehicles both sides. Trolleys stacked up behind. Occasionally a height bar at the entrance, which settles if a van can reach you at all. So mention how hemmed in you are when you call, and which way the car is facing. If there is no room to work beside your Skoda Octavia, our technicians roll it without the engine. That's not pedantry over a handful of seconds: starts prime things, blend comes out of your tank toward your pump, and a motor moved twice for a roomier space is quietly a bigger job than one nobody touched.

## Coverage in Bromley Heath

Moorend, Winterbourne Down, Whiteshill, Vinney Green, Frenchay — all of those on our trips that carry us over to Bromley Heath itself, a small village.

Not on the list? That tells you nothing. The names above are just the nearest few, and the majority of locations in Gloucestershire have a page of their own somewhere on the site.

Contact us and ask rather than assuming, above all when you are on a boundary or anywhere your phone misreads.

Use the map for the area shown on this page.

The car doesn't need to move to us. We work across the lot — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Your diesel BMW 3 Series will have seemed perfectly usual on the way back from Bromley Heath Junior School. They all do, and that's the catch with petrol in a diesel and not the other way round. Put diesel in a petrol vehicle and it mostly won't run, and so the person stops and the damage stops with them. Put petrol in a diesel and it starts, idles and pulls away as though nothing has happened — all while your high-pressure pump does its work without the lubrication your fuel is meant to be providing. Nothing tells you, since from the driver's seat there's nothing to caution you about. Phone with approximately how far you drove and how hard you worked it; the second one matters more than the first.

## Kerbside stops in Bromley Heath

Not everybody gets a safe spot to stop.

Hazards flashing at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge beside Goodwood Gardens because you noticed after setting off — our technicians take that call so often that it is the ordinary kind.

Whether you stay beside the motor or step away from it turns on if staying nearby looks safe.

It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the trouble: fire it up to reach somewhere better and the mix goes further into your fuel system with every mile covered.

A van coming to an awkward spot is no problem for us, and it's much better for your car than driving on.

Never risk it. The journey home from Willy Wicket is perfectly possible, which is exactly the trouble — a thinned tank doesn't stop a diesel starting or pulling away, it just wears down the components the fuel is meant to lubricate. Phone us, and let the Nissan Qashqai stay where it sits.

## Petrol in a diesel, but your car has rolled

This is where your M4 counts, under a mile out of Bromley Heath.

It will often get you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is smoke, a lumpy idle and power ebbing away — not a tidy stop. Misfilled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Come off at the first safe exit, switch off, and never restart the vehicle to reposition.

On a longer trip — anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city — assume the contamination has been through the filter, the pump and your injectors, and mention it when you call. It affects what we bring.

## A bit about Bromley Heath

Bromley Heath is a locality situated on the banks of the River Frome in Gloucestershire, with a mix of rural and suburban characteristics. Bromley Heath has a relatively low elevation of 41 metres above sea level and is located near several other small communities, including Moorend and Winterbourne Down. Bromley Heath is also close to the city of Bristol, which is approximately 5.7 miles away. Bromley Heath is predominantly composed of detached housing, reflecting its suburban edge character.

## When we arrive with you around Bromley Heath: what we do

- Three things get established before any quote — your fuel that went in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.

- The contaminated fuel is drawn from that tank.

- What is left in the system should not be what started the issue, so your fuel lines get flushed and the filter cleaned.

- Priming follows, once clean diesel is in.

- The engine is turned on and tested to confirm it runs properly on fresh diesel.

That has it ready to pull away.

Permanent damage is very rare when it has been spotted quickly, and because all of it is done where the car is, it never needs to be taken to a garage.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Bromley Heath is a different job

The issue isn't the same, though the first step is — do not fire it up — if what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

Petrol thins your diesel and strips the lubrication your fuel system relies on.

Corrosion and deposits are what a diesel tank gets instead, as AdBlue is urea in water.

We deal with both, and AdBlue removal around Bromley Heath has its own page with the detail — including why it's frequently the more significant of the two.

Clattering, an uneven idle, white smoke, a throttle gone dead. That is a wrongly fuelled diesel Peugeot 3008 telling you what's wrong. Switch off where you have stopped, close to Bury Hill Camp or anywhere else, and do not restart the vehicle to find a better spot.

## Bromley Heath costs for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

Honestly, no single figure fits on a page like this. This job differs. Here is what varies it:

- This is the key one: whether the engine has been run, or driven.

- Wrong fuel in, against what the tank takes — that ratio.

- Whether it's petrol or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can a technician get to it and work there sensibly?

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight rather than as a range.

Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is good for that.

Cleared, not cleared — that is what a diesel Mercedes E-Class which got as far as Christ Church Centre needs. Running a diesel puts that mix into the fuel filter, your lines, your pump and the rail, none of which empties with that tank, so by now the tank holds the smaller part of the problem.

## Petrol in diesel: frequent questions around Bromley Heath

## I'm on a forecourt around Bromley Heath. Can you drain the vehicle on the spot?

A fair part of this work takes place there, so yes.

Regularly, provided the site consents: Sainsbury's, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that location is something our technicians answer on the spot.

## Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Litres aren't the measure. Ratio is, and far more than either, it matters if anything has been run.

What decides how much work is needed is if that mix has been sucked through your fuel system — because although five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one, either way that's the query.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Switch off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop.

Driving takes the problem along — out of the tank, into your pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really helpful thing left to you isn't restarting it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It's not an alteration, and so a drain then flush carried out properly does not void a manufacturer's warranty.

Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a separate fault and it doesn't put back what petrol has thinned.

Your tank still has petrol in it later, and the pump still has to cope with it.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There is no need to take it to a main dealer, since our engineers drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is.

## You, and the car, still together?

Turned off is how the car stays.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting the vehicle later.

Cold, still, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. People fear this a lot more than they need to.

Emptying misfuelled vehicles, Bromley Heath and the rest of Gloucestershire, wherever they are. Kerbside. Forecourt. Home.
