# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Brooklands? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled cars where they sit, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, all over Brooklands and the rest of Surrey. The very first thing to do is not to turn on the engine. When the motor has not yet been started and the fuel is still inside the tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it needs, and the following few minutes decide that, not how much was put in.

Ring us before anything else starts, and you'll see what follows from there.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to do now

- Never crank it — and don't depend on it if it runs. This is the bit most people get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol motor filled with diesel typically just cannot run, so the motorist stops and the damage ends with them. A diesel fed petrol typically starts, idles and drives off just fine for a couple of miles. It isn't fine. It's wearing your fuel system while you drive.

- Leave your ignition be as well. Diesel performs two jobs: it burns, and before it ignites it protects your high-pressure fuel pump and its injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. Flicking the car's ignition on is commonly all it takes to prime your system, which pulls this petrol out of your tank and into just those components.

- That guidance supposes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It won't. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you get is a bigger tank of the same mix. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.

- We'd sooner get to an awkward place than have it started — so if you reasonably can, stay put. Nothing is easier to deal with than a motor that hasn't shifted. On the verge on Fernihough Close, that means hazards on and keep it.

- A van turning up instead of circling rests on two things: a postcode beginning KT13 0, and whatever is nearest to you with a name on it. Have both ready before you phone.

- Call 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three things — what got in, about how much, plus if your car has been started. The responses shape all that follows.

The trip in is what pushed thinned diesel through the pump. Standing still has pushed nothing. Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Golf, sitting at Byfleet & New Haw all day, waits dormant in that tank while it waits. Call us first — before your keys go in.

## At a forecourt: clearing petrol from a diesel

A large chunk of the work ends up done at the pump, since that's where it often starts.

Still at Shell? Then that is typically where it happens. Station forecourts are normal for us, with the consent of the site.

At a forecourt, this is spotted with the motor never run, and no place else manages that.

The few seconds between seeing the till receipt and reaching for your key determine how much requires rinsing. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was fired up and driven to get there, so fuel was drawn from your tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means your lines and your filter require cleaning as well as that tank. It is not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still deal with it where the vehicle stands.

Staff will normally help out pushing it clear of the petrol pump, which lets the next customer get by. Take the help.

Cranking the car to move four car lengths isn't.

How much fuel the pump has sucked is what we are really asking — not how long ago any of it was. So the enquiry we like goes like this: diesel Skoda Octavia, some litres of unleaded, a couple of miles covered, now turned off outside Lidl.

## Do our technicians cover your part of Brooklands?

As a small village, Brooklands has a regular visit, and the areas close by come with it on that same round: St Georges Hill and Byfleet, Wey Meadows and Whiteley Village, New Haw.

We do come. Those names above are only the closest neighbours, and a page is there for nearly all towns in Surrey, so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage.

Guessing is the thing to resist, especially on the border or anywhere your satnav gets lost. Ring us to enquire.

Check our map for the ground shown here.

We operate at the roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks over all of that, and the car doesn't need to come to us.

Twenty to nine at the gates of Byfleet Primary School, already late, and the till receipt in your hand shows unleaded. Hazards on, ignition off, call us. Three miles in the Peugeot 308 feels like nothing, but a diesel pump meters fuel to demand — and a rushed morning dash asks for plenty.

## Brooklands: stuck where you pulled up

Not everybody finds a safe place to pull over.

A normal call for us instead of an unusual one: noticed after setting off, ended up by the verge on Summers Close or at a lay-by with your hazards going.

Clear of the vehicle if it's not wise to sit inside, beside it if it is.

Do not restart it to get to a better spot. It will go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls the mix deeper into your fuel system.

Our van driving to an inconvenient place is no problem for us, and it is much better for your car than driving on.

Your Audi A4 remains where it is in the car park by The Blue Anchor for the whole job, which usually runs like this. First our technicians ask what was put in, about how much, and whether the engine has run since, because most of the work rests on those replies. Your tank is emptied of the tainted mix, the lines are rinsed, and the filter comes off if it is a serviceable one. With clean diesel in and the fuel system primed, your car is fired up and tested, and once it is running correctly you pull away.

## Driven it already? Pull over, then check this

under a mile out of Brooklands, your M25 is what counts now.

A misfuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong, while the signs when they appear are normally lost power, a rough idle and smoke rather than a tidy stop.

The first safe junction is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone.

Assume the worst of that on a long run. Anything approaching the under 25 miles to the closest city, and the mixture has been through your filter, through the pump, through the fuel injectors. Tell us when you phone. What we bring differs.

Don't drive it home to buy yourself time. You already have it: nothing gets worse while your car stands, because a diesel Ford Focus left at Brooklands Community Park is doing none of what it did on the way there. The pump has stopped turning.

## All about Brooklands

Brooklands is a locality in Surrey, situated on the riverside at a low elevation of around 22 metres, with nearby places including St Georges Hill, Byfleet, and Wey Meadows. Brooklands is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock and is located approximately 18 miles from central London. Brooklands benefits from its proximity to the Thames Valley and the surrounding countryside. Brooklands has a small population of around 978 residents.

## When we get to you around Brooklands: what happens

- We establish what was put in, how much, and whether the motor has run. The responses shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before quoting.

- Your tank gets emptied completely.

- What is left in your system should not be what created the trouble, and so your fuel lines get flushed and the fuel filter cleared.

- Our technicians pour clean diesel in and bleed the system.

- It's run with new diesel in it, and our engineers make sure that it is running properly.

That leaves the car ready to drive away.

Lasting damage is very uncommon when it has been noticed quickly, and since everything is done where the vehicle is, it never has to go to a workshop.

## A distinct matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Brooklands

The fault isn't the same, though the opening step is — do not fire it up — if what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

Petrol thins the diesel and takes away the lubrication the system relies on.

Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to rust and deposits.

AdBlue removal around Brooklands has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it's usually the more serious of the two. Our engineers cover both.

## What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs in Brooklands

Truthfully, no single figure belongs on a page like this. This job differs. Here is what varies it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, against how much your tank can hold.

- AdBlue or petrol, whichever got in.

- Whether a technician can sensibly get to the car and work on it, which rests on where the car is.

Tell us what the car is, how much went in, and if your motor has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range.

If it isn't time-critical — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — works too.

## Brooklands drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## I'm on a forecourt in Brooklands. Can you drain the vehicle on the spot?

A good portion of this work takes place there, so yes.

Our technicians attend Tesco and the other forecourts around town all the time, with the site's consent — tell us which one you're at when you call and we'll tell you whether we can work there.

## Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Ratio settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run.

A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate situations, certainly. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether your fuel system has had that mixture sucked through it.

## Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What then?

Pull over somewhere safe, turn off, and leave the vehicle off.

Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the problem out of the tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains fixable much more frequently than drivers fear.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It isn't a modification, so a drain and flush carried out correctly doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty.

What is likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for your engine to stay off.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a different problem and it does not put back what petrol has diluted.

Petrol stays in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no reprieve from it.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You don't need one. The car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.

## You, and the vehicle, still together?

Do not turn it back on.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting it later.

Cold and parked, a car is in the best position available — and drivers fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.

Throughout Surrey and in Brooklands: call-out fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
