# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Broomgrove

If you have not started your engine as yet, do not. A fuel drain and nothing more is nearly always what a motor needs while the fuel is still sitting in the tank and the motor has not yet run, which is why it's the next few minutes that count, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel travels to the vehicle wherever it has ended up in Broomgrove or the rest of East Sussex, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, and drains and flushes it there.

Our technicians can explain what the following stage is. Contact us — it comes before all else.

## Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in order

- Never crank it. Fired up anyway? Then don't depend on it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle usually cannot run, and so the motorist stops and the damage ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It moves off happily, for a few miles. Drivers get that backwards. It is not all right — that fuel system is wearing down every mile you do.

- Two tasks, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps that injection pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only manages the one. Which is why your ignition stays off also — switch it on and you often prime the system, and that's petrol leaving that tank for exactly those parts.

- Don't dilute it. Diesel added on top takes out nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The grade makes no difference.

- A car that has never shifted is the quickest one to sort, and so stay where you are if you sensibly can. Pulled up on the verge on Parker Road? Hazards on, then leave it there. A tricky spot works for us better than a started motor.

- Keep your position prepared before you call. A postcode starting TN34 3 and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it is the difference between the van showing up and the van circling.

- Phone 0333 366 0103. Tell us what was put in, roughly how many litres, plus whether the car has started. These three replies settle the entire call-out.

## Can petrol be pumped out of a diesel at a forecourt?

The work begins at the pump, generally. Regularly the job wraps up on site too.

We operate on garage forecourts all the time, with the site's agreement, so if you are still at Texaco that is usually where this drain takes place.

Nowhere else except the forecourt can this be halted with your engine still untouched.

Everywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and driven to get there, which means fuel was sucked from your tank, through your filter then into your high-pressure pump. That's not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still sort it out where it stands. It does mean the lines and the fuel filter need cleaning as well as the tank, and that is settled by the few seconds between seeing the receipt and reaching for the keys.

The attendants will generally offer to push the vehicle out from the pump so the next customer can get by. That is worth doing.

Firing the car just for four car lengths? Don't.

## Will our engineers cover your part of Broomgrove?

Being a residential suburb, Broomgrove gets a frequent call, whilst its neighbours close by go along on that same run: Halton and St Helens Wood, Broomsgrove and Blacklands, High Wickham.

If yours is not on the list it doesn't mean we don't come — there are pages for nearly all places in East Sussex, and the ones named above are just the closest neighbours.

Presuming is the habit to skip, especially on a boundary or anywhere your satnav fails. Contact us and enquire.

The patch the page covers is on the map.

Kerbside, forecourt, drive, car park: every bit of it is ground we serve, and none of it needs your vehicle to travel to us.

A passer-by will tell you to shift the car out of that gateway and sort it out later. Please don't. A misfilled diesel Peugeot 308 on the zig-zags outside Mulberry Baird Primary is an inconvenience; the same motor started three more times to be helpful is a fuel system rather than a tank. Every restart primes the fuel lines and drags more petrol through the fuel filter and into your pump. Stay put, let them moan, and give us a call.

## Roadside call-outs around Broomgrove

Not everyone has a sensible spot to pull over.

Set off, then twigged? Ended up by the verge beside Faraday Drive, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazard lights flashing? That's a routine call here. Not a rare one.

Out of the car while it isn't sensible to sit in it, beside it when it is.

Do not start it up to reach a nicer place. It will go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls that blend deeper into your fuel system.

However inconvenient the spot, it is no trouble for us to get to it, and that is much better for your car than carrying on.

## Petrol in a diesel, but the motor has moved

This is where the M20 comes in, under 25 miles away from Broomgrove.

A loss of power, a lumpy idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they come, instead of a neat stop — and a misfuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

Take the next junction that is sensible, stop there, and do not start the car to reposition.

On a longer run — anything close to the under 50 miles to the closest city — take it the contamination has been through the filter, the pump and the injectors, and tell us when you phone. It affects what we bring.

None of that is your engine failing. That's the part worth hearing, and it's why the usual Hoad's Wood call ends better than it sounds: a diesel Audi A4 drives out there without complaint, comes back with the power gone, your idle lumpy and possibly a little smoke, and the cause is your fuel no longer acting like diesel. Diesel has to be thick enough to seal the close-fitting parts it runs through; petrol weakens it; and a diesel injection system is hydraulic as much as chemical, needing your fuel to hold pressure and not only to burn. So pressure that should build then stay built leaks past tolerances, delivery turns up poorer and later and less even than built, and all of that stops once the fuel is sorted.

## A little about Broomgrove

Broomgrove is a suburban area in East Sussex, situated near the coast and approximately 53.9 miles from London. Broomgrove has a mix of housing types, but is predominantly characterised by terraced homes. Broomgrove sits at an elevation of 71 metres, overlooking the surrounding landscape. Broomgrove is located near other suburban areas, including Halton and St Helens Wood.

## What comes next when our engineers get to you in Broomgrove

- We check what went in, how much, and if the engine has run. The replies alter the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting.

- Away comes the polluted mixture.

- What is remaining in the system should not be what caused the issue, so the fuel lines get rinsed and your filter cleared.

- Bleeding the system follows, once clean diesel is in.

- The motor is fired up and tested to make sure it runs properly on new diesel.

After that it's ready to drive away.

We do all of it wherever your car has come to a stop, which means it never has to go to a workshop, and when it has been caught quickly, it's very uncommon for there to be long-term damage.

Draining your Ford Focus, changing the filter where there's a usable one, rinsing your lines, putting clean fuel through the whole circuit: that's this job, and it's shaped by the worst of it waiting in the fuel lines rather than in the tank by this point. Three things help when you ring from close to Site of Broomgrove Power Station — which side the filler is on, whether a van can stand beside without blocking the road, and whether the motor has run since you filled up. On-street is the usual spot we work, so the place itself is hardly ever the trouble. A cramped parking space trumps a motor driven somewhere more handy.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, in Broomgrove?

The problem is not the same, though the first instruction is — do not fire it up — if what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol.

The protection a fuel system depends on gets stripped away by petrol, which weakens the diesel.

Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings corrosion and residue.

Both are ours. There's a separate Broomgrove page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

Strange spots are where this occurs most, and the reason is mechanical not careless: the smaller petrol nozzle slides into a newer diesel filler neck with practically no resistance at all. Filled up close to St Barnabas without thinking, in a diesel Dacia Duster you have had for two days? Ring us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars often get driven further before anybody spots it, and mileage is what decides how much petrol reaches the injectors.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Broomgrove?

One number wouldn't be honest here, because this isn't one job. These are the things that shift it:

- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, measured against how much the tank holds.

- Whether it was unleaded or AdBlue.

- Whether a van can sensibly reach your vehicle and work on it, which rests on where the car is.

Tell us your car, the quantity and if it has run, and you'll get a straight answer rather than a range.

Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is ideal for that.

Somebody certain will tell you to drain it then put clean diesel in. Half true, that. Try it on a diesel BMW 5 Series close to Broomgrove Community Centre and the engine will start — which is exactly why it sounds like sense. Here is the problem: there is petrol left in your filter and the feed lines, and the first thing the engine does is suck it back through the pump once more. Emptying a tank achieves nothing about fuel that already left the tank. Phone us. Your circuit gets flushed, the fuel filter comes off where there is one worth removing, and that is what separates a repaired motor from one that simply starts.

## Broomgrove drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Broomgrove?

Much of what we do happens nowhere else. So yes.

Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Esso is somewhere we're frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you will hear whether working there's possible.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

It depends on the proportion rather than the litres, and a lot more on whether your engine has run.

Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been drawn right through, or has it not?

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then turn off and keep it off.

Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the issue out of your tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays salvageable much more often than people expect.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out properly isn't a change and does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one.

## Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

Two-stroke oil solves a distinct fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No.

Your tank still has petrol in it later, and your pump still has to cope with it.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Not at all. We drain and clean the car wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a dealership.

## Standing next to it?

Don't turn your engine back on.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting it later on.

This is recoverable from much more often than drivers fear, and a parked, cold motor is the best position to be in.

Across East Sussex and in Broomgrove: mobile fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
