# Broomhaugh: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Do not start your engine. While the fuel is still inside your tank and your engine has not yet been started, a tank drain is nearly always all it takes — and that is settled in the coming few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled cars where they stand, across Broomhaugh and the remainder of Northumberland, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive.

We shall tell you what the next step will be. Contact us — that happens before anything else.

## Your first five steps: petrol in a diesel

- Never crank it — and do not believe it when it runs. This is the part motorists have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol engine fed diesel normally just won't run, so the motorist stops and the wear stops with them. A diesel given petrol generally starts, idles and drives away just fine for a couple of miles. It isn't fine. It is eating into the fuel system as you drive.

- Two jobs, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps your injection pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only handles the one. That is why the ignition is left off too — flick it on and you usually prime your system, and that's petrol leaving the tank for just those components.

- Do not thin it. Diesel poured on top takes out nothing, so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The octane makes no difference.

- We'd rather drive to a difficult location than have it started — so if you safely can, sit tight. Nothing is quicker to sort than a motor that has not moved. On the verge on Mill Grange, that means hazards on then leave it.

- Keep your location prepared before you phone. A postcode starting NE44 6 and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it is the difference between our van turning up and the van circling.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three points — what was put in, roughly how many litres, plus whether the car has been started. Those responses settle whatever comes after.

## Removing petrol from your diesel on the forecourt

The job starts at a pump, mostly. Often enough the work wraps up there as well.

Still at Shell? Then that's generally where it happens. Petrol station forecourts are everyday for us, with the agreement of the station.

Before the motor has fired — the forecourt is the one place it is halted.

Everywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was fired up and moved to get there, which means fuel was sucked from your tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure pump. That is not a disaster, and we can still deal with it where it stands. It does mean your lines and your filter need cleaning as well as the tank, and that is settled by the few seconds between seeing your receipt and going for the key.

Staff will normally chip in pushing it clear of the petrol pump, which lets the next customer get by. Welcome the assistance.

Moving the car four lengths does not justify firing it.

## Will our technicians cover your corner of Broomhaugh?

Riding Mill, Riding Lea, Beauclerc, Broomley, Bywell — every one of these on the rounds that bring us out to Broomhaugh too, a residential suburb.

Not on the list? That means nothing. The names above are just the nearest few, and nearly all towns in Northumberland have a page of their own elsewhere on our site.

Contact us and ask instead of presuming, especially if you're on a boundary or anywhere your phone gets wrong.

This map is the patch this page covers.

All of it is territory we serve: a roadside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You never move your car anywhere.

You'll be advised to move the vehicle out of that gateway and fix it later. Please don't. On the zig-zags outside Broomhaugh (VA) Church of England First School, a wrongly fuelled BMW 3 Series running on diesel is in the way, and that's all it is. Fire it up three more times being helpful and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes the fuel lines, every prime drags more petrol beyond your filter towards your pump. Let them complain. Ring us.

## Stranded by the kerbside in Broomhaugh

Not everyone finds a sensible place to stop.

Hazards on at a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge on A695 since you noticed after setting off — our engineers take that call so often that it's the ordinary kind.

Whether you sit beside the car or stand clear of it depends on whether being nearby looks sensible.

Don't restart the motor to limp the vehicle somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging the mixture further into your fuel system.

Driving on causes the vehicle far more harm than our van driving out to an awkward place, and that's no trouble for us.

What our technicians will want to know is whether that run there was short and cold, because that is where petrol is least able to burn fully — and anything that won't burn can get past the piston rings then into the sump. Right up to the moment somebody takes it home, a diesel Nissan Qashqai sitting in the car park at The Wellington holding a tank full of petrol in it is a simple job. Nothing worsens as it sits, and so park it overnight then phone first thing.

## A few miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

Here is where the local Central Motorway East matters, under 15 miles from Broomhaugh.

It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it is some smoke, a lumpy idle and power falling away — not a tidy stop. Misfuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

The first safe junction is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone.

Assume the worst of it on a long run. Anything approaching the under 15 miles to the closest city, and the petrol has been through the fuel filter, through your pump, through the fuel injectors. Say so when you call. What our engineers bring alters.

None of that is the motor failing. That is the part worth hearing, and it is why the ordinary Abbeybank Wood call ends better than it sounds: a diesel Audi A6 drives out there without fuss, comes back with the power gone, the idle lumpy and perhaps a little smoke, and the cause is your fuel no longer behaving like diesel. Diesel has to be viscous enough to seal the tightly fitted components it flows through; petrol thins it; and a diesel injection system is hydraulic as much as chemical, needing the fuel to hold pressure rather than only to burn. So pressure that should build and stay built leaks past gaps, delivery shows up weaker and later and less even than built, and all of that stops once your fuel is put right.

## A bit about Broomhaugh

Broomhaugh is a suburban area situated on the riverside in Northumberland, with a mix of detached housing and a population of around 802 residents. Broomhaugh sits at an elevation of 32 metres, close to the nearby settlements of Riding Mill and Riding Lea. Broomhaugh is located near the city of Newcastle upon Tyne, approximately 14 miles away, and is part of the wider North East region. Broomhaugh offers a relatively quiet residential environment, with nearby amenities and transport links to the surrounding area.

## What our engineers do when our engineers get to you around Broomhaugh

- The answers change the work, which is why we ask before quoting: what went in, how much of it, and if the motor has run.

- Away goes the polluted fuel.

- Lines cleaned, filter cleared. Whatever remains later on isn't the thing that created the issue.

- We pour fresh diesel in and bleed your system.

- We start it and check it runs smoothly on new diesel.

Then it is ready to drive away.

There's no need to go to a garage at any point, because the work is all done where your car is, and when it's caught soon, lasting damage is very rare.

Seldom the trouble, the spot. On-street is the commonest place our technicians work, and a narrow parking spot is far preferable to a vehicle that has been driven somewhere more handy. What does help, when you phone from close to Millennium Hall, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether a technician can park next to without blocking the road, and whether anything has run since you filled up. Then the Mercedes A-Class gets emptied, the fuel filter changed where a serviceable one exists, the fuel lines cleaned and fresh fuel put through the full circuit — since by now the worst of it is in the fuel lines, not that tank.

## Broomhaugh AdBlue removal is a separate problem

If what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening instruction is unchanged — never crank it — but this issue is not.

Diluted diesel, and no lubrication left for the fuel system that depends on it. That's petrol.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus build-up.

We cover both, and AdBlue removal in Broomhaugh has its own page with the detail — including why it is usually the more significant of the two.

A throttle gone soft, white smoke, an uneven idle, rattling: that is a wrongly fuelled diesel Citroen C3 telling you what is wrong. Never restart the car to find a better place — turn off where you have stopped, by Parish Hall or anywhere else.

## Broomhaugh costs for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

Our engineers cannot put one price on this page honestly, as the job is not one job. What shifts it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.

- Whether it's unleaded or AdBlue.

- Whether a technician can sensibly get to your vehicle and work on it, which hinges on where your vehicle is.

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much got in, and whether the motor has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range.

If it is not urgent — the car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

## Broomhaugh motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Broomhaugh?

A big part of this work happens there, so yes.

We visit Esso and the other forecourts around town routinely, with the station's agreement — tell us which one you are at when you ring and we'll tell you whether we can work there.

## Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Ratio is, and much more than either, it counts if anything has been run.

Five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is needed is if that mixture has been drawn through the fuel system.

## I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Stop somewhere sensible, turn off, and keep it off.

Driving is what moves the trouble from that tank into the pump and injectors — but it's fixable much more often than motorists assume, and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain then flush carried out correctly is not a change and doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty.

An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a distinct problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No.

The tank still has petrol in it later on, and the pump still has to live with it.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

You don't need one. The car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.

## Is your car still with you?

Turned off is how the car remains.

Turn it off somewhere sensible and keep it off, if you have already driven it.

Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. Drivers fear this much more than they need to.

Draining misfilled motors, Broomhaugh and the rest of Northumberland, wherever they are. Kerbside. Forecourt. Home.
