# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Broomlands? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled cars where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, all over Broomlands and the rest of North Ayrshire. The very first thing to do is not to fire up the engine. While your engine has not turned over and the fuel is still in that tank, a fuel drain is almost always all it requires, and the next few minutes settle that, not how much went in.

A single ring to us is enough: we shall tell you what happens from here. Do it straight away.

## Your next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

- Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will usually fail to run at all, and so the person stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it ticks over, it pulls away — all right for a couple of miles. Motorists have that reversed, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So don't fire it up. And having started, don't rely on it: the fuel system is grinding while you drive.

- Leave your ignition alone as well. Diesel has two jobs: it burns, and before it combusts it lubricates the high-pressure pump and those injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. Flicking your ignition on is often sufficient to prime that system, which draws that petrol out of that tank then into just those parts.

- Do not pour diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system won't cope with petrol by percentage in the way that advice assumes, and topping up clears nothing — it simply hands you a bigger tank of the same mix. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.

- Stay put if it's wise to. Hazards on, ignition off, keep the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Pladda Avenue, anywhere — a difficult spot for us beats a started motor, and nothing is simpler for us to deal with than a car that never shifted.

- Before you dial, work out your whereabouts. Anything next to you with a label on it, plus a postcode beginning KA11 1 — that is what settles whether the van arrives or circles.

- Three answers determine the whole job: the fuel you put in, the rough amount of it, plus if anything has been going since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.

## On a forecourt: removing petrol from the diesel

Pumps are where the work often kicks off, and where a good share of that finishes.

If you're still on the forecourt at BP, that is typically where this drain takes place — we work on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the site's permission.

Nowhere except a forecourt can it be halted with your motor still unrun.

Everywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and moved to get there, which means fuel was sucked from that tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a disaster, and we can still put it right where it sits. It does mean your lines and the fuel filter need cleaning as well as that tank, and that is decided by the few seconds between checking your receipt and going for the key.

The staff will generally offer to push it clear of the pump so the next customer can get by. That is worth doing.

Rolling it four bays does not justify cranking the motor.

## Parts we serve in Broomlands

As a coastal area, Broomlands has a regular visit, while the areas close by go with it on the same journey: Bourtreehill and Dreghorn, Stanecastle and Perceton, Girdle Toll.

Not on that list? That tells you nothing. The places above are only the closest few, and the majority of places across North Ayrshire have a page of their own somewhere on the site.

Close to a boundary, or somewhere the satnav can't find? Ring us and enquire rather than guessing.

Look at our map for the area included on this page.

Our technicians work roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks across all of it, and your car never needs to travel to us.

You will be advised to shift the vehicle out of the gateway and fix it later. Don't. On the zig-zags outside the local primary school, a misfuelled Nissan Qashqai running on diesel is in the way, and that's all it is. Crank it three more times being courteous and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes the fuel lines, every prime drags more petrol beyond the fuel filter toward the pump. Let them grumble. Ring us.

## Stuck on the kerbside in Broomlands

Some drivers find no suitable spot to pull in at all.

Hazards flashing at a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge on Pladda Wynd because you noticed after setting off — our engineers take that call regularly enough that it is the normal kind.

Stay beside your car if it is safe to wait in it, and clear of the vehicle if it is not.

Do not start up your motor to limp it somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling that blend further into the fuel system.

We'll bring our van to an inconvenient place without any fuss, and for your car that is much better than pressing on.

You head off at the end, once our engineers have fired it up and confirmed it runs smoothly on clean diesel, with your system primed. Before that, in the car park by The Brae, the contaminated fuel comes out of that tank, the lines get flushed and the fuel filter comes off where your Ford Focus has a replaceable one. Everything starts with three questions when we reach your car: what got in, how much of it, and whether it has been fired up since.

## Petrol in a diesel, and the vehicle has gone

under 10 miles from Broomlands, the M77 is what counts now.

A misfilled diesel will often take you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong, and the symptoms when they appear are usually a drop in power, a rough idle and smoke rather than a clean stop.

Do not start it to reposition. Pull off at the first sensible exit then switch off.

On a longer drive — anything approaching the under 25 miles to the nearest city — take it the mixture has been through your filter, the pump and the fuel injectors, and say so when you call. It affects what our technicians bring.

Never drive it home to buy yourself time. You already have it: nothing gets worse whilst the car stands, since a diesel Mercedes C-Class parked at Annick Park is doing none of what it did on the way there. Your pump has stopped turning.

## Broomlands itself

Broomlands is a coastal locality in North Ayrshire, situated near the towns of Bourtreehill and Dreghorn. Broomlands has a relatively low elevation of 12 metres above sea level and is located approximately 23 miles from Glasgow. Broomlands is characterized by its predominance of terraced housing, which is typical of many Scottish coastal towns.

## When our engineers get to you around Broomlands: what we do

- Three things get asked before any quote — the fuel that got in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.

- Your tank is drained of it.

- Lines purged, filter cleaned. Whatever remains afterwards isn't the thing that caused the issue.

- We put new diesel in and prime the system.

- When it's turned on, our technicians confirm it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

From that point, you are ready to drive away.

Our technicians do all of this wherever the car has stopped, which means it never has to go to a garage, and when it has been spotted quickly, it's very unusual for there to be permanent damage.

Clearing the Dacia Duster, changing your filter where there's a serviceable one, rinsing the lines, putting fresh fuel through the full system: that's this job, and it is shaped by the worst of it waiting in the fuel lines rather than in that tank by this point. Three things help when you call from near Dreghorn Library — which side the filler is on, whether our van can pull up beside without blocking the road, and whether the engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the commonest spot we work, so the location itself is hardly ever the issue. A cramped parking bay beats a motor driven somewhere more handy.

## Broomlands AdBlue removal is a separate problem

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — your motor stays off — whereas this problem beneath it is a distinct one altogether.

Petrol weakens your diesel and takes away the protection the fuel system depends on.

Rust and build-up are what a diesel tank gets instead, since AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the details lives on its own Broomlands page. Both are ours to handle.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in Broomlands?

Frankly, no single number fits on a page like this. This job changes. Here's what moves it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.

- The kind of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can a van reach it and work there sensibly?

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much went in, and whether your motor has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range.

For the car at home that's going nowhere and isn't pressing, works too.

By this point your tank isn't where most of the damage is. Once a diesel has run, that mixture is in the fuel filter, the fuel lines, your pump and the rail — and it does not come back out with that tank contents. A diesel BMW 5 Series that made it close to St John Ogilvie Parish Church needs your system cleared, not emptied.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Broomlands drivers

## Fuel drains on a Broomlands petrol station forecourt

Plenty of what our technicians do gets done nowhere else. So yes.

Tell us which one you are at when you phone and we'll tell you if our technicians can work there. With the owner's consent our technicians visit Sainsbury's and the other forecourts locally all the time.

## Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

Ratio settles it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run.

Five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is required is if that mixture has been sucked through the fuel system.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that.

Driving takes the issue along — out of that tank, into your pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely valuable thing left to you is not restarting it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out properly, emptying and flushing is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it.

Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a separate issue and it does not restore what petrol has thinned.

The pump still has to put up with it, because your tank still has petrol in it later.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Wherever the car is, our technicians drain and clean it there, so a drive to the main dealer does not come into it.

## You, and the vehicle, still together?

The engine remains off.

Turn it off somewhere sensible and keep it off, if you have already driven it.

Cold and still, a motor is in the best position available — and motorists fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.

Clearing misfilled cars, Broomlands and the rest of North Ayrshire, wherever they are. Roadside. Forecourt. Home.
