# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Brynmill? Don't Start It

With the tank still holding the fuel and the motor not yet run, nearly every job needs only a drain, so leave your engine off. That outcome is decided in the minutes immediately after the fill-up, and not by the amount that was put in. Throughout Brynmill and the rest of Swansea, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and flushes it where it sits, whether by a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt.

Call us and then our engineers can show you what follows after that before you attempt much else.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to do now

- Don't crank it — and don't rely on it if it fires up. This is the thing most people have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor fed diesel normally just can't run, so the motorist stops and the harm stops with them. A diesel filled with petrol normally starts, idles and moves off perfectly well for a few miles. It's not all right. It's grinding your fuel system while you drive.

- Leave the ignition off too. Diesel does two roles: it burns, and before it combusts it lubricates that injection pump and those injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. Switching the car's ignition on is often all it takes to prime that system, which carries this petrol out of your tank and into precisely those parts.

- That guidance presumes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you get is a fuller tank of the same mix. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.

- A vehicle that has never moved is the easiest one to deal with, so remain where you are if you reasonably can. Pulled up on the verge on Bryn Road? Hazards on, then leave it there. A tricky spot works for us better than a started engine.

- Keep your location ready before you phone. A postcode starting SA2 0 and whatever is closest to you with a label on it is the difference between the van arriving and a van circling.

- Call 0333 366 0103. Expect three things — what was put in, approximately how many litres, and whether the motor has been run. Your responses decide all that follows.

The high-pressure pump spent that morning drive working on a fuel that had given up a lot of the protection it is built around. Diesel lubricates that pump, and the fuel injectors with it, before any of the fuel burns; petrol does the burning and none of the lubricating. So take a diesel Renault Clio, fuelled at quarter past eight, taken in to work, and left standing outside Swansea till you realise somewhere around eleven. Three hours of sitting have changed nothing about it. The few miles before that changed a good deal, which is why the thing we ask is about mileage rather than time. Call us. Keep the vehicle right where it is.

## Forecourt drains for petrol in a diesel

A large share of this work is done at a forecourt, because that's where it usually starts.

We operate on garage forecourts regularly, with the owner's agreement, and so if you are still at Shell that is generally where this drain takes place.

The forecourt is the only spot this is stopped before your motor has fired.

Fuel pulled out of that tank and through your filter, all the way to your high-pressure pump, is what occurs when the motor is fired up and the car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in the filter and the lines as well as the tank. That is still not a calamity, and we put it right where the car is. What decides it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after the till receipt was read.

The attendants will normally offer to push the car out from the pump so the next motorist can get through. It is worth doing.

Shifting it four bays doesn't justify starting the engine.

The call our engineers like runs like this: diesel Volkswagen Tiguan, some litres of unleaded, driven a couple of miles, now switched off outside Liqun Chinese Supermarket. What we're actually asking is how much fuel your pump has sucked — not how long ago it was.

## Brynmill and the towns near it

Brynmill is a residential suburb, so our team are out to it and to the areas near it on the same trips: Uplands, Sketty, Cwm Gwyn, Townhill and Mount Pleasant.

We still come. The places above are only the nearest neighbours, and a page exists for most places around Swansea, so an absence from the list isn't an absence from the coverage.

Contact us to enquire rather than assuming — boundaries especially, and anywhere your phone can struggle with.

The map marks the ground the page covers.

Your car never needs to travel to us. Our technicians work over every bit of that — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

## Stranded at the kerbside in Brynmill

Not everyone finds a safe place to pull over.

Set off, then noticed? Ended up on the verge beside Brynmill Crescent, or parked in some lay-by with your hazards going? That's a normal call here. Not a rare one.

Sit beside the vehicle if it is safe to sit there, yet clear of it when it's not.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls the blend further into your fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why the engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere safer.

Pressing on does your car far more harm than a technician heading out to a difficult spot, and that's no problem for us.

## So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel after some miles

Your M4 is the road which matters now, and runs under 5 miles from Brynmill.

A loss of power, a lumpy idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they arrive, rather than a tidy stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

Pull off at the first safe exit, turn off, and don't start the vehicle to reposition.

On a longer run — anything close to the under 3 miles to the nearest city — assume the petrol has been through your filter, the pump and the fuel injectors, and tell us when you phone. It alters what our engineers bring.

The pump is not turning, so whatever the diesel Mercedes A-Class did on the way to Recreation Grounds, none of that is going on now. Nothing is getting worse while it sits. Take your time over this — but never drive it home to buy any.

## Brynmill itself

Brynmill is a coastal suburban area in Swansea, situated approximately 1.3 miles from the city centre. Brynmill sits at an elevation of 19 metres, overlooking Swansea Bay, and is characterised by its predominantly terraced housing. Brynmill is bordered by nearby places such as Uplands, Sketty, and Cwm Gwyn, and is home to a population of around 5758 residents.

## What our engineers do when our technicians get to you around Brynmill

- Our technicians ask first, quote after. What was put in? How much? Has your engine run? Those responses change what the work really is.

- The contaminated fuel is pulled from your tank.

- We flush the fuel lines and clean the fuel filter, so what's left in the fuel system isn't what caused the trouble.

- Fresh diesel goes in, and then the system gets primed.

- It's run with clean diesel in it, and we check that it's running correctly.

From that point, you are ready to set off.

All of this is done where the car is, so it never has to go to a workshop, and when it has been spotted early, permanent damage is very uncommon.

Leave the Citroen C3 close to Saint Gabriel's Church and ring us. We are blunt about not driving on because a worn pump loses, and what it gives off travels onward with the fuel to your injectors further along.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, around Brynmill?

Do not fire it up: that first rule holds whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the problem itself.

Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and removes the protection the fuel system relies on.

Rust and deposits are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, since AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Both are ours. There's a separate Brynmill page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Knocking, a ragged idle, white smoke, a throttle gone dead. That's a misfuelled diesel Vauxhall Insignia telling you what is wrong. Switch off where you have stopped, close to Swansea Cenotaph or anywhere else, and never start it to find a better spot.

## Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Brynmill

We cannot put one figure on this page frankly, since the job isn't one job. What changes it:

- Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, compared with how much your tank takes.

- Whether it was petrol or AdBlue.

- Whether a technician can safely reach your vehicle and work on it, which hinges on where the vehicle is.

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much got in, and whether your engine has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range.

For your car at home that is going nowhere and is not pressing, is fine too.

## Things our engineers get about petrol in diesel in Brynmill

## I am on a forecourt in Brynmill. Can you drain the vehicle here?

Much of what our engineers do gets done nowhere else. So yes.

Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Texaco is somewhere we are regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you'll hear whether working there's possible.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Proportion is, and far more than either, it matters whether anything has been run.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different situations, of course. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if the system has had that mix drawn through it.

## I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that.

Driving is what takes the problem from the tank into the pump and injectors — but it's recoverable much more often than drivers assume, and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart the car.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain then flush carried out correctly isn't a modification and doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty.

Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. It belongs to a distinct problem from a separate era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind restores.

Your pump still has to cope with it, as that tank still has petrol in it afterwards.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

Wherever your car is, our technicians drain and clean it there, so a trip to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

## You, and your car, still together?

Don't turn it on again.

Turn it off somewhere safe and keep it off, if you have already driven it.

A still, cold motor is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from much more often than people fear.

Across Swansea and in Brynmill: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
