# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Bunny?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, all over Bunny and the rest of Nottinghamshire. The very first thing to do is not to turn on your engine. While the engine has not yet been started and the fuel is still in the tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it takes, and the coming few minutes settle that, not how much was put in.

Our technicians can tell you what your next step is. Ring us — this comes ahead of anything else.

## Your next five steps: petrol in a diesel

- Never crank it. Started all the same? Then do not trust it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle normally won't run, so the motorist stops and the damage halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It pulls away normally, for several miles. People get that muddled. It is not fine — your fuel system is wearing down every mile you drive.

- Diesel burns, and before it combusts it greases — that injection pump, the injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the ignition be as well: turning it on is often all it takes to prime the system, and priming moves petrol from that tank into exactly those parts.

- Topping up clears nothing. It gives you a larger tank of the same mix, because a diesel fuel system won't accept petrol by percentage in the way that advice implies — so do not pour diesel on top to water down it. Grade is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.

- Sit tight if it's safe to. Hazards on, ignition off, keep the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Church Street, anywhere — a tricky place for us is better than a started motor, and nothing is simpler for us to handle than a car that never shifted.

- Know where you are before phoning. A postcode starting NG11 6, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise our van circles instead of showing up.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Let us know what was put in, roughly how many litres, plus if your car has run. These three details decide your whole visit.

Tonight, please, instead of Monday. Driving it home is the one thing not to do: a commute has put real quantity through your pump already, petrol-thinned diesel and plenty of that, and the return leg would about double the figure to no end. The BMW 3 Series can stay at Attenborough perfectly safely. Ring from the platform if handier; standing over us while our engineers work is not needed.

## Removing petrol from a diesel at the forecourt

The work starts at a pump, mostly. Quite often the job wraps up at one as well.

We operate on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the owner's agreement, so if you're still at Total that's normally where this drain takes place.

Before the engine has fired — a forecourt is the one setting it is stopped.

We can still deal with it where it sits, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, your car has been started and moved there, and that drew fuel through your filter and into the high-pressure pump, right from your tank. None of that is a disaster, although the flush then has to go past your tank to the lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between reading the receipt and reaching for the key are what determine that.

Attendants will normally chip in pushing it away from the petrol pump, which lets the next motorist get through. Take the offer.

Cranking it to move four vehicle lengths is not.

Every start primes your fuel system and sucks more of that blend out of the tank and toward your pump — which is why a motor shuffled twice into a roomier bay has quietly become a worse job than one left precisely where it stopped. So when we cannot work beside the diesel Nissan Qashqai, our engineers move the car without running it. None of that is fuss about a few seconds of running. Car parks like the one at Co-op Food our engineers work in often, and your fuel is hardly ever the tricky part: the bay is. Motors either side, a trolley shelter behind, occasionally a height barrier at the way in settling if our van can reach you at all. Tell us how boxed in you are, and which way the vehicle faces.

## Will our engineers reach your part of Bunny?

Being a village, Bunny gets a routine call, and its neighbours close by come along on that same journey: Bunny Hill and Bradmore, Wysall and Keyworth, Costock.

There are pages for nearly all towns around Nottinghamshire, and the ones mentioned above are just the closest neighbours — so yours being missing from the list says nothing about whether we come.

Call us and enquire rather than presuming — county lines particularly, and wherever the satnav can struggle with.

The map shows the patch this page covers.

We operate at the roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks throughout all of that, and your car never needs to come to us.

## Stranded at the kerbside somewhere in Bunny?

Some people find no suitable spot to stop at all.

Hazards on in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge on Moor View because you worked it out after setting off — our engineers take that call regularly enough that it is the usual kind.

Fine there? Wait beside it. Not okay? Move out and clear of it.

It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that is the problem: fire it up to get to somewhere safer and the mixture goes further into your fuel system with every mile covered.

Pressing on does the car far more harm than a technician driving out to a tricky location, and that is no trouble for us.

## So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel after a few miles

This is where your M1 comes in, under 10 miles out of Bunny.

Lost power, a rough idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they appear, instead of a clean stop — and a misfuelled diesel will often take you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.

Never restart it to reposition. Pull off at the next sensible exit then turn off.

It affects what our engineers bring, so tell us when you call: on a longer run — anything near the under 10 miles to the closest city — take it the contamination has been through the filter, the pump and the fuel injectors.

A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically: the fuel has to hold pressure, not just burn. Thin that fuel and pressure which should build then stay built bleeds past gaps instead, leaving your engine a weaker, later, less even delivery than it was built around. Petrol thins diesel, and diesel has to be thick enough to seal the close-fitting components it flows through — that is the whole mechanism. It accounts for the ordinary Bunny Village Green call too: a diesel Peugeot 208 that went out without a murmur and came back down on power, uneven at idle, perhaps smoking a little. None of which is your engine failing, and that's the bit worth hearing. The fuel has stopped acting like diesel. Put the fuel right and it stops.

## Bunny itself

Bunny is a small village in Nottinghamshire, situated on the banks of a river at an elevation of around 40 metres. Bunny lies close to the nearby settlements of Bunny Hill, Bradmore, and Wysall, and is approximately 6.6 miles from Nottingham. Bunny has a population of around 715 people, predominantly living in detached houses. Bunny is located in the East Midlands region, about 102.8 miles north of London.

## What our engineers do when our engineers get to you around Bunny

- The responses change the work, which is why we ask before pricing: what got in, how much of it, and if your motor has run.

- The polluted fuel is pulled from that tank.

- We clean the fuel lines and clean the fuel filter, and so what is remaining in your system is not what caused the trouble.

- The system gets bled, on clean diesel.

- It is run with fresh diesel in it, and our technicians make sure that it's running properly.

That leaves the car ready to set off.

Long-term damage is very uncommon when it has been noticed early, and as everything is done where your car is, it never has to go to a garage.

Rarely the problem, the location. On-street is the most common location our technicians work, and a cramped parking bay is far preferable to a vehicle that has been driven somewhere more convenient. What does help, when you phone from near Church of St Mary the Virgin, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether our van can pull up next to without blocking the road, and whether anything has run since you filled up. Then the Kia Sportage gets drained, the fuel filter changed where a usable one exists, the lines cleaned and fresh fuel put through the whole circuit — because by now the worst of that is in the fuel lines, not your tank.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, in Bunny?

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening step is unchanged — the engine remains off — while this issue underneath it is a separate one altogether.

Weakened diesel, and no lubrication left for your fuel system that relies on it. That's petrol.

Corrosion and deposits are what a diesel tank gets instead, because AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the detail lives on its own Bunny page. Both are ours to handle.

## Bunny pricing for a petrol-in-diesel drain

What moves the figure is laid out below, as the job isn't one job and we cannot truthfully put a single price on this page.

- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, judged against how much your tank takes.

- Whether it was petrol or AdBlue.

- Where the vehicle is, and if our van can safely reach and work on it.

A firm answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the quantity, and whether it has run.

Car at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is fine for that.

By now that tank is the least of it. Run a diesel and the mix goes into your filter, into the fuel lines, into your pump, into the rail — and none of that leaves with your tank contents. A diesel Ford Fiesta that made it close to Mission Room, Bradmore wants its system cleared. Draining isn't the same thing.

## Questions we get about petrol in diesel around Bunny

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Bunny?

Much of what our engineers do gets done nowhere else. So yes.

Our engineers visit Esso and the other forecourts locally all the time, with the station's agreement — tell us which one you're at when you ring and we'll tell you whether our engineers can work there.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres are not the yardstick. Ratio is, and a lot more than either, it counts whether anything has been run.

Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mixture been pulled right through, or has it not?

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. What next?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that.

It's recoverable a lot more often than people fear, even though driving is what shifts the issue from that tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It is not a change, so a drain and flush carried out properly doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one, which is another reason to leave it turned off.

## Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a distinct issue and it doesn't replace what petrol has diluted.

After that? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

There is no need to take it to a dealership, since we drain and clean the car wherever it is.

## Still with your car?

Keep it shut off.

If you have already driven it, pull over somewhere safe, turn it off then leave it off.

This is recoverable from far more commonly than people assume, and a still, cold motor is the best place to be in.
