# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Butt Lane?

Do not fire up the engine. If the fuel is still inside that tank and the motor has not run, a tank drain is nearly always all it needs — and that's settled in the following few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they sit, across Butt Lane and the rest of Staffordshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive.

Just one ring our way will be sufficient: our engineers shall show you what follows after this. Make it straight away.

## Your first five steps: petrol in a diesel

- Do not crank it. Started regardless? Then do not trust it. Diesel in a petrol motor normally can't run, and so the driver stops and the wear halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It moves off normally, for several miles. People get that reversed. It isn't okay — the fuel system is wearing down every mile you drive.

- Leave your ignition be also. Diesel does two jobs: it burns, and before it ignites it protects your high-pressure fuel pump and those injectors. Petrol does the first but not the second. Flicking the ignition on is commonly enough to prime the system, which draws that petrol out of that tank and into just those components.

- Never add diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system won't tolerate petrol by percentage in the way that advice suggests, and topping up clears nothing — it merely leaves you a bigger tank of the same mixture. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.

- We'd rather come to an awkward place than have it started — so if you safely can, sit tight. Nothing is quicker to deal with than a vehicle that hasn't moved. On the verge on West Avenue, that means hazards on and keep the car.

- Have your position prepared before you phone. A postcode that starts ST7 1 and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it is the difference between a van arriving and the van circling.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Say what got in, about how much, and also if the motor has run. Those three answers settle the full job.

## Removing petrol from your diesel on a forecourt

Most of the job begins at the pump, which means a big part of it gets finished at one.

Still at Tesco? Then that is usually where it gets done. Station forecourts are normal for us, with the permission of the owner.

Nowhere but the forecourt can this be halted with your motor still unrun.

Anywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was started and driven to get there, which means fuel was pulled from the tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure pump. That's not a disaster, and our technicians can still put it right where it is. It does mean your lines and the filter need cleaning as well as the tank, and that is settled by the few seconds between checking the receipt and reaching for the key.

Wheel the vehicle out of the way if the attendants offer, and they generally will. The next motorist gets past the pump, and that is worth doing.

Starting it just for four vehicle lengths? Never.

## Butt Lane plus the villages near it

The same runs get us to Red Bull, Hardings Wood, Hollins, Woodshutts and Coalpit Hill as well as Butt Lane, which is a residential suburb.

Not on this list? It means nothing. The places above are only the closest few, and the majority of places in Staffordshire have a page of their own somewhere on this site.

Ring us to check instead of guessing, especially if you are on the border or somewhere a satnav misreads.

See our map for the area included on this page.

Our technicians work roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks throughout all of that, and the car doesn't need to come to us.

## Roadside breakdowns across Butt Lane

Not everybody gets a decent spot to pull in.

If you realised after setting off and ended up along the verge of Old Butt Lane, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights going, that is a common call for us rather than a rare one.

Whether you sit beside your car or stand away from it depends on if being nearby is safe.

It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the trouble: restart the vehicle to reach somewhere safer and the mix goes further into the system with every mile travelled.

Carrying on causes the car far more harm than a technician coming out to a tricky location, and that is no problem for us.

Straightforward job, this one — till somebody takes it home. A diesel Ford Focus parked by The Corner Pin with petrol in that tank loses nothing by standing there overnight, so park the vehicle then call us once it is light. Expect a query about the run there, though. Short and chilly is precisely where petrol struggles to burn, and what won't burn can work past the rings then into the sump.

## Run it already? Pull over, then see below

under 5 miles from Butt Lane, the M6 is what counts now.

A misfilled diesel will often get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, and the signs when they arrive are usually a loss of power, an uneven idle and smoke rather than a clean stop.

Pull off at the next safe junction, turn off, and do not start the vehicle to move it.

On a longer drive — anything near the under 10 miles to the closest city — take it the mixture has been through the fuel filter, the pump and your injectors, and say so when you ring. It affects what our technicians bring.

Nothing is getting worse while it sits. Whatever your diesel Mercedes C-Class did on the way to Stone Cliff Wood, it's doing none of that now: the pump isn't turning. So take your time — but don't drive the vehicle home to buy yourself any.

## About Butt Lane

Butt Lane is a suburban area in Staffordshire, situated near the River Trent and close to the city of Stoke-on-Trent. Butt Lane has a mix of semi-detached housing and local amenities, with nearby places including Red Bull, Hardings Wood, and Hollins. Butt Lane is located at an elevation of 137 metres, and its residents are approximately 141.7 miles from London. Butt Lane remains a residential community with a population of around 2580 people.

## What comes next when we get to you in Butt Lane

- We ask first, quote after. What got in? How much? Has your engine run? Those answers shape what the work actually is.

- Our technicians empty that tank of the contaminated mixture.

- Fuel lines are rinsed through and your filter cleared, leaving nothing in the fuel system that started any of this.

- Priming follows, once fresh diesel is in.

- Our engineers fire it up and make sure it runs correctly on new diesel.

That has it ready to pull away.

We do all of this wherever your car has ended up, which means it never has to go to a garage, and if it has been noticed early, it is very rare for there to be permanent damage.

The pump waits ahead of the fuel injectors, and so whatever a worn-out one sheds travels on with your fuel — which is why we're blunt about not driving on. Phone us, and leave your diesel Dacia Duster where it's close to The Baptist Church Butt Lane.

## A separate job: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Butt Lane

The issue is not the same, though the opening step is — don't crank it — if what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

The protection a fuel system depends on gets stripped away by petrol, which thins the diesel.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it brings rust and deposits instead.

Our engineers handle both, and AdBlue removal around Butt Lane has its own page with the full story — including why it's frequently the more significant of the two.

Knocking, an uneven idle, white smoke, a throttle gone dead. That's a wrongly fuelled diesel Audi A3 telling you what is wrong. Turn off where you have stopped, close to Congleton Road Community Centre or anywhere else, and never restart the car to find a better location.

## Butt Lane costs for a petrol-in-diesel drain

We cannot put one figure on this page truthfully, as the job is not one job. What changes it:

- This is the big one: whether the engine has been run, or driven.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.

- Whether it's petrol or AdBlue.

- Where your car is, and if a technician can safely reach and work on it.

A clear answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the quantity, and whether it has run.

For the vehicle at home that's going nowhere and is not time-critical, works too.

A person sure of themselves will tell you to drain the vehicle then put clean diesel in. Only half right, that. Try it on a diesel Volvo XC60 close to All Saints Church, Church Lawton and the engine will start — which is exactly why it sounds like sense. Here is the trouble: there's petrol left in the filter and the feed lines, and the first thing the engine does is suck it back through the pump again. Emptying a tank achieves nothing about fuel that already left the tank. Ring us. The system gets flushed, the fuel filter comes off where there is one worth removing, and that's what separates a repaired car from one that merely starts.

## Things our technicians get about petrol in diesel in Butt Lane

## I am on a forecourt in Butt Lane. Can you drain it on the spot?

Plenty of what we do takes place nowhere else. So yes.

Our engineers visit Sainsbury's and the other forecourts around town all the time, with the site's agreement — tell us which one you are at when you phone and we will tell you if our engineers can work there.

## Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Proportion is, and far more than either, it counts whether anything has been run.

Five litres into a nearly dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mixture been drawn right through, or has it not?

## I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Pull in somewhere safe, switch off, then leave it off.

Driving is what shifts the problem from your tank into your pump and injectors — but it is recoverable a lot more often than motorists fear, and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain and flush done to a correct standard, which is no change at all.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one, which is another reason to leave it turned off.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has thinned is not replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a separate problem. So no.

The tank still has petrol in it after that, and the pump still has to cope with it.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Wherever the vehicle is, our technicians drain and flush it there, so a drive to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

## You, and the car, still together?

Keep the car turned off.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull in somewhere sensible, switch it off and keep it off.

This is recoverable from much more regularly than drivers expect, and a still, cold vehicle is the best position to be in.
