# California: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Never turn on the motor. While the petrol is still inside that tank and your engine has not yet been started, a fuel drain is almost always all it takes — and that is decided in the following few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they sit, across California and the remainder of Buckinghamshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive.

Call us before all else starts, and you'll hear what happens after that.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to do first

- Do not start the car — and never believe it if it fires up. This is the part drivers get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor filled with diesel normally just will not run, so the motorist stops and the wear halts with them. A diesel filled with petrol usually starts, ticks over and drives away without complaint for several miles. It's not all right. It is wearing your fuel system whenever you drive.

- Diesel ignites, and before it burns it protects — that high-pressure pump, those injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the car's ignition be also: flicking it on is frequently all it takes to prime that system, and priming moves petrol from that tank into just those parts.

- Topping up removes nothing. It leaves you a bigger tank of the same mix, because a diesel fuel system will not cope with petrol by percentage the way that guidance presumes — so don't tip diesel on top to weaken it. Type is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.

- A vehicle that has never shifted is the easiest one to sort out, so stay where you are if you safely can. Stopped on the verge on Coxhill Way? Hazards on, then keep it there. A difficult location works for us better than a started motor.

- Before you call, get your position. Anything nearest to you with a name on it, plus a postcode starting HP21 8 — that is what decides whether our van turns up or circles.

- Three replies shape the whole job: the liquid you put in, the rough measure involved, plus whether it has been running since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

Do not run it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has gone through that injection pump in real volume on the way in, and the trip back would about double that for nothing at all. Call us — the platform is okay. There is no need to stand over the Renault Clio at Aylesbury while the work goes on, and we'd much rather hear from you tonight than discover on Monday.

## At a forecourt: draining petrol from a diesel

Pumps are where the work usually starts, and where a big chunk of it finishes.

Our technicians work on garage forecourts regularly, with the owner's consent, so if you are still at the nearest petrol station that's typically where the drain happens.

Before your motor has run — a forecourt is the single spot the mistake gets halted.

The few seconds between seeing your receipt and reaching for the keys settle how much requires rinsing. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was fired up and driven to get there, so fuel was pulled from that tank, through the filter and into your high-pressure pump. That means the lines and your filter need flushing as well as your tank. It is not a disaster, and our engineers can still put it right where the car sits.

Staff will generally help out pushing it away from the petrol pump, which lets the next driver get through. Accept the assistance.

Starting the car over four vehicle lengths? No.

Petrol in the Skoda Octavia, and it takes diesel? Shopping in your boot, you at Morrisons, somewhere around California? Then phone us, and leave the motor out of it — not even to get out of the bay. Somebody comes out to you. Tank cleared, fuel lines flushed, fresh diesel in, and home you go. Light throttle over a mile pulls hardly anything, so these are often the easy cases.

## Can we serve your part of California?

The same journeys bring us to Aylesbury, Walton, Southcourt, Manor Park and Walton Court besides California, which is a residential suburb.

There are pages for most towns around Buckinghamshire, and the ones listed above are merely the closest neighbours — so yours being left off the list tells you nothing at all about if our engineers come.

Guessing is the habit to resist, above all on the border or anywhere your satnav goes wrong. Call us and enquire.

This map outlines the area this page includes.

We work roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks over all of it, and your vehicle doesn't need to travel to us.

A diesel pump delivers fuel to demand, and a rushed morning dash demands plenty — so three miles in the Peugeot 308 sounds like nothing and is not. Twenty to nine at the gates of Oak Green School, running late, a receipt in your hand reading unleaded: hazards on, motor off, ring us.

## Roadside stops around California

Not everybody gets a sensible place to pull over.

Hazards flashing in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge of Station Way West as you noticed after setting off — our technicians take that call often enough that it is the usual kind.

Okay where you are? Wait by it. Not okay? Get out and clear of it.

It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that's the catch: start it up to reach somewhere better and that mixture goes further into your fuel system with every mile driven.

We'll bring our van to an awkward location without any bother, and for your car that's much better than carrying on.

## A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

This is where the M40 comes in — under 15 miles from California.

A drop in power, a lumpy idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they come, rather than a tidy stop — and a misfuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

Take the next exit that is sensible, stop there, and do not start the car to reposition.

On a longer run — anything approaching the under 25 miles to the closest city — take it the mixture has been through the filter, the pump and your injectors, and say so when you call. It alters what we bring.

## All about California

California is a suburban area in Buckinghamshire, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 77 metres. California sits near the Grand Union Canal and is close to several nearby places, including Aylesbury, Walton, and Southcourt. California is located approximately 36.3 miles from London and 16.1 miles from Milton Keynes, with a population of around 8093 people, predominantly residing in flats.

## What happens when our engineers reach you around California

- We ask first, quote after. What went in? How much? Has the engine run? Those answers shape what the work really is.

- The tainted mixture is pulled out of that tank.

- Our technicians flush your fuel lines and clean the fuel filter, so what is left in the fuel system isn't what started the trouble.

- Clean diesel goes in, and then the system gets primed.

- Our technicians fire it up and check it runs smoothly on new diesel.

That leaves it ready to pull away.

All of this is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to go to a workshop, and when it has been caught soon, permanent damage is very unusual.

Off the forecourt, receipt read, a few hundred yards, left by Aylesbury Railway Club. For a diesel Ford Focus whose motor has turned, that's about the best version there is. Phone us, then let the car stand with your ignition alone. Short assists, genuinely — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and your filter has had weakened fuel through it, and so has your pump. Which is why the lines get flushed and not just your tank drained.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in California is a distinct matter

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — the engine stays off — while this problem underneath it is a different one altogether.

Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and removes the protection the fuel system depends on.

Rust and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, since AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Our technicians cover both, and AdBlue removal in California has its own page with the full story — including why it's usually the more significant of the two.

## What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost around California

Truthfully, no single figure fits on a page like this. The job differs. Here is what changes it:

- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.

- Wrong fuel in, against what your tank takes — that ratio.

- Which went in: petrol or AdBlue.

- Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there's sensible for a van.

Tell us the vehicle, the amount and whether it has run, and you'll get a straight answer rather than a range.

For the vehicle at home that is going nowhere and is not urgent, is fine too.

No dashboard light exists for this, which is why motors in that position usually get driven again before anybody calls. Do not be one of them. The throttle went limp and the idle turned ragged after a few streets, and the diesel BMW 5 Series is now resting near House of Fraser. Sluggishness there means fuel that cannot build pressure fully rather than a motor failing. Turn off. Call us.

## Petrol in diesel: everyday questions in California

## I am on a forecourt around California. Can you drain the vehicle here?

A fair portion of this work happens there, so yes.

Our technicians work at BP and the other forecourts around town all the time, with the owner's agreement — tell us which one you're at when you phone and we will tell you whether our engineers can work there.

## A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres are not the yardstick. Proportion is, and a lot more than either, it counts whether anything has been run.

Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been pulled right through, or has it not?

## I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then turn off and keep it off.

Driving takes the problem along — out of your tank, into your pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly useful thing left to you is not restarting it.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, clearing and cleaning is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it.

A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No.

Petrol stays in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no respite from it.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Wherever your car is, we drain and flush it there, so a drive to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

## Still with your car?

Never switch it back on.

Turn it off somewhere sensible then leave it off, if you have already driven it.

This is recoverable from much more frequently than motorists assume, and a stationary, cold vehicle is the best position to be in.

On-site fuel draining in California and throughout Buckinghamshire — at the roadside, on the forecourt or at home.
