# The Next Steps, in Order: Petrol in a Diesel Car in California

Whatever you do, don't switch the motor on, even for a moment, to move it. Stop; leave it off.

Petrol in a diesel that hasn't been run is typically a simple drain plus a flush, done right where the car stands, and what you do in the coming few minutes settles that more than anything else.

Anywhere you happen to be in California, this is the order things run from now.

## Petrol in a diesel, engine off — the first minute

Work through these in order, before you do anything else.

- Pull your keys out. Even your ignition on its own can prime the system, drawing petrol out of your tank to precisely the components it damages, and so keep the vehicle alone entirely.

- No diesel on top. More fuel in removes none of that petrol — it just makes you with extra of the same mixture.

- Hazards on. If you are at all near moving traffic, make your car easy to see before you do anything else.

- By hand, not on the motor: that is how it comes off the pump. Ask the forecourt attendants to help you roll, however short the mileage.

- Which fuel, and about how much? The receipt answers that, and that is where our questions start. Do not bin it.

Still driving when you noticed? Come off the M5 at the next junction if that is where you are, under 3 miles from California, and stop somewhere safe instead of pressing on to the services. Then start at step one.

## California fuel drain: has your motor run yet, or not?

From this point on, everything comes down to a single answer.

Motor never run at all?

- Nowhere but your tank: that is where that petrol yet is.

- Where the vehicle stands is usually where this work is done: a drain, then a flush.

- No place is better, and it's why the first stage counts so much.

If your motor has run, even briefly:

- Petrol has been drawn out of your tank, past your filter and into the lines.

- A bigger run carries it right through to the high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors.

- The further it went, the larger the job — the lines, the fuel filter, and now and then more besides.

Petrol does not lubricate. Diesel does, oiling your pump and injectors as it flows through, which is why the line sits where it does.

A tank of petrol, left alone, hurts nothing.

Pump that petrol, though, and it grinds down the very parts doing the moving.

## Before you call about petrol in a diesel in California: what we need

Whether the technician goes round or finds you comes down to a little planning.

- Your location: a postcode beginning B29 5 works best.

- Name the street — 30 or wherever you have pulled up — or the car park.

- Name a car park by what it serves — the one at Asda, for instance — and it is much easier to find.

- Tell us what your vehicle is — make, model — and confirm it's diesel.

- Petrol or AdBlue? Tell us which. They are different jobs, and AdBlue has its own California page.

- Roughly how much — in litres from your receipt, or by how long the nozzle was in.

- Whether it has run. Then if it has, how far and how hard.

- Whose motor it is. Some hire and company contracts want the owner to approve this work, and that is easier settled before our engineers get there than after.

Call 0333 366 0103 then. Writing to is fine as well if it can wait, with the vehicle parked at home, going nowhere.

## While you wait for a fuel drain in California

In the wait, the harm comes from well-intended help — which is why these count.

- Your safety comes before your car. Somewhere dangerous? Get clear of the traffic then wait away from it. Safe where it sits? Wait with it.

- No one starts it. Not a passer-by being kind, not to check it is all right, not to roll it a couple of yards.

- None of it gets the petrol back out — not two-stroke oil, not injector cleaner, not anything from the boot. So no additives.

- A home-made drain misses your fuel that has already gone beyond your tank, and siphoning petrol by the road is hazardous too.

- Even your radio or the windows are not worth switching your ignition on for.

## When the van gets there: the fuel drain, step by step

- Three questions. What was put in, how much, and whether it's run. Those answers shape this job, which is why the price comes after them and not before.

- Draining it is how the mixture gets taken from the tank.

- If it ran, the fuel lines are holding petrol that has moved beyond the tank — so they are cleaned.

- The filter is dealt with. Cleared, or changed where the vehicle has a workable one.

- Fresh diesel goes in, then your system is primed.

- First start on new diesel. When priming is complete, the engine is fired up and our technicians confirm that it runs smoothly.

The vehicle has new diesel running through it before we leave.

If it has been caught soon, permanent damage is very rare, and your car goes back to normal driving straight away.

## California, after your fuel drain: back on the road

- Drive normally. There is nothing unusual to do after it has been started on clean fuel.

- Pull over and ring us back if anything looks wrong early on — a light on your dash, smoke from your exhaust, an idle that is lumpy, or a throttle with a dead spot.

- The work may matter later with a hire company, an insurer or a fleet manager. Hold on to the documents.

- Next time, read the pump. The label, not the colour of the handle.

## About California itself

California is a suburban area in the West Midlands, situated near the River Rea and close to the Woodgate Valley. California has a mix of semi-detached housing and is located near several other residential areas, including Woodgate Valley, Weoley Castle, and Woodcock Hill. California sits at an elevation of around 152 metres, approximately 4 miles southwest of Birmingham city centre.

## California and nearby: fuel drains across the area

Most of West Midlands gets the same teams as California for petrol in diesel call-outs, Woodgate Valley, Weoley Castle and Woodcock Hill among them.

Somewhere tricky to describe, or close to a boundary? Asking is better than assuming — ring.

## Ring, and leave it off — petrol in a diesel in West Midlands

Stage one is the whole of it: engine off, keys out, receipt in your pocket. From there Petrol in Diesel carries on, on the forecourt, at the kerbside or on your driveway.
