# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Cambourne?

With your tank still holding the petrol and the motor not yet turned over, nearly every job needs only a drain, so leave your engine off. That result is settled in the minutes immediately after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that went in. Throughout Cambourne and the remainder of Cambridgeshire, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and cleans it where it sits, whether at a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt.

Ring us and then our team shall explain what comes next before you attempt any more.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to try next

- Never fire it up. Fired up anyway? Then don't believe it. Diesel in a petrol car typically cannot run, so the person stops and the damage stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It drives off fine, for several miles. People get that backwards. It's not fine — the fuel system is wearing every mile you cover.

- Diesel combusts, and before it ignites it protects — your high-pressure pump, those injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the ignition be also: turning it on is often sufficient to prime that system, and priming carries petrol from your tank into just those components.

- Do not pour diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system will not cope with petrol by percentage as that guidance implies, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it just gives you a bigger tank of the same blend. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.

- Our team would sooner drive to a tricky spot than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay put. Nothing is simpler to handle than a vehicle that has not moved. On the verge on High Street, that means hazards on and leave the vehicle.

- Keep your whereabouts ready before you ring. A postcode starting CB23 6 and whatever is next to you with a name on it is the difference between the van showing up and our van circling.

- Call 0333 366 0103. Expect three things — what was put in, about how many litres, and whether your car has been started. Your responses settle everything that happens next.

The drive back would more or less double it, for no reason at all. One commute has already pushed a real quantity of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure fuel pump of your Volkswagen Golf. So leave the car where it sits. Phone us from the platform if that's handier — nobody needs you standing over the vehicle at St Neots while our engineers work, and tonight trumps finding out on Monday.

## Draining petrol from your diesel at a forecourt

Forecourts are where this work usually begins, and where a good portion of that ends.

If you're still on the forecourt at Morrisons, that is usually where this drain gets done — our technicians work on garage forecourts regularly, with the site's agreement.

Nowhere else other than the forecourt can this be stopped with the motor still unstarted.

Our technicians can still put it right where it sits, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, the car has been started and moved there, and that drew fuel through the fuel filter and into your high-pressure pump, right from your tank. None of that is a disaster, although the flush then has to go past the tank to the lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between checking the till receipt and reaching for your key are what settle that.

The staff will generally help you push the car clear of the petrol pump so the next motorist can get by. That's worth doing.

Rolling the car four bays does not merit starting the motor.

Diesel Skoda Octavia. A couple of litres of unleaded. Done a couple of miles. Turned off now, outside Morrisons. That's the phone call we want, as the point beneath it's about volume through the pump not hours on the clock.

## Cambourne plus the areas beside it

Lower Cambourne, Upper Cambourne, West Cambourne, Caxton, Crow End — every one of them on the runs that carry us across to Cambourne too, a rural village.

Not on that list? It tells you nothing. The names above are simply the nearest few, and nearly all places across Cambridgeshire have a page of their own elsewhere on our site.

Contact us and check rather than presuming, especially if you're on the border or anywhere the satnav misreads.

The map outlines the area this page covers.

Your car does not need to move to us. Our technicians work throughout all of that — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

## Stranded at the kerbside near Cambourne

Not everyone gets the opportunity to stop somewhere sensible.

A routine call for us rather than a rare one: noticed after setting off, ended up on the verge of Broad Street or at a lay-by with the hazards going.

Remain with the vehicle if it's wise to wait there, and clear of it if it isn't.

It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the catch: start it up to reach somewhere safer and that mixture goes further into your fuel system with every mile covered.

We'll send our van to a difficult location without any fuss, and for your car that is much better than driving on.

A diesel Ford Focus in the parking area by Monkfield Arms holding a tank of petrol in it is an easy job, right up until somebody drives it home. Park it overnight and call us first thing. Nothing degrades while it waits. What we will ask is if that trip there was short and chilly, because that's where petrol is slowest to burn correctly — and what doesn't burn can slip past the piston rings and into the engine oil.

## A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

Here is where your M11 matters, under 10 miles away from Cambourne.

It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it's some smoke, a rough idle and power falling away — not a tidy stop. Misfilled diesels rarely give you one of those.

The first sensible junction is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone.

Long run? Anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that got to by the petrol. Say that on the phone, since it affects what goes in our van.

Stop somewhere safe, turn off and call us. Fine on the way out to Monkfield Wood, gutless on the way back? Then look at your tank. Petrol dilutes diesel; thinner fuel leaks past the close-fitting parts that build injection pressure; and the further the diesel Dacia Duster went, the less of that pressure it held.

## A little about Cambourne

Cambourne is a large village in Cambridgeshire, situated approximately 8 miles west of Cambridge. Cambourne sits in a relatively flat area of inland England, with an elevation of around 72 metres above sea level. Cambourne has a mix of old and new housing, with detached homes being the predominant type, and is divided into several areas including Lower Cambourne, Upper Cambourne, and West Cambourne.

## Once we reach you around Cambourne: what we do

- Our engineers ask first, price after. What got in? How much? Has the engine run? Those replies alter what the work really is.

- The contaminated mixture is pulled out of the tank.

- Fuel lines are purged through and the filter cleared, leaving nothing in the fuel system that started any of this.

- Our engineers put clean diesel in and prime the system.

- It is run with clean diesel in it, and our engineers make sure that it's running smoothly.

Then it's ready to pull away.

Permanent damage is very uncommon when it has been spotted quickly, and as all of this is done where your car is, it never needs to be taken to a workshop.

## Cambourne AdBlue removal is a different problem

If what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening rule is the same — do not start the car — but this problem isn't.

Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and removes the protection the fuel system depends on.

Rust and deposits are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Both are ours. There's a separate Cambourne page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

A vehicle you collected two days ago gets driven further before anybody notices anything, which is the hire and courtesy issue in one sentence — and how far it went is what determines the amount of petrol reaching your injectors. Nothing slapdash about the mistake itself: a modern diesel filler neck takes the smaller petrol nozzle with almost no resistance, and so new locations see most of these. Ring us from wherever you are, close to Cambourne Library or not, and we will come to the BMW 5 Series.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Cambourne?

One price would not be fair here, since this isn't one job. These are the things that change it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.

- Which got in: unleaded or AdBlue.

- Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there is safe for a technician.

Tell us what your car is, how much got in, and if the engine has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range.

If it is not time-critical — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Cambourne motorists

## Fuel drains on a Cambourne petrol station forecourt

Plenty of what we do takes place nowhere else. So yes.

Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we will tell you if our technicians can work there. With the site's consent our technicians work at Shell and the other forecourts around town regularly.

## Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Proportion decides it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run.

Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is required is if that mix has been pulled through the system.

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What next?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that.

Driving is what takes the trouble from the tank into the pump and injectors — but it is recoverable far more commonly than people assume, and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart the vehicle.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain then flush carried out properly isn't an alteration and doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty.

Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one.

## Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

What petrol has thinned isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a separate fault. So no.

Your pump still has to live with it, because that tank still has petrol in it after that.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

There is no need to bring it to a dealership, because our engineers drain and clean your car wherever it is.

## Is your vehicle still with you?

Don't switch your engine back on.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere safe, turn off, and let it stay that way.

This is recoverable from a lot more regularly than people assume, and a still, cold motor is the best position to be in.
