# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Camelon?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled cars where they sit, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, throughout Camelon and the rest of Falkirk. The first thing to do is not to start the engine. While the engine has not run and the petrol is still sitting in that tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it requires, and the coming few minutes decide that, not how much got in.

Ring us and then our technicians can explain what happens next before you try any more.

## What to do first about petrol in a diesel

- Do not start the car. Turned on anyway? Then don't depend on it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle generally cannot run, and so the motorist stops and the damage halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It moves off happily, for several miles. Most people get that confused. It is not fine — the fuel system is wearing every mile you cover.

- Two jobs, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps the injection pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only handles the one. That is why your ignition stays off also — turn it on and you often prime the system, and that is petrol exiting your tank for exactly those components.

- Topping up removes nothing. It leaves you a bigger tank of the same blend, since a diesel fuel system doesn't accept petrol by percentage in the way that guidance implies — so do not pour diesel on top to weaken it. Grade is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.

- A vehicle that has not moved is the quickest one to sort out, so wait where you are if you reasonably can. Pulled up on the verge on Union Road? Hazards on, and keep the vehicle there. An odd location works for us better than a started engine.

- Before you dial, work out your position. Anything next to you with a label on it, plus a postcode that starts FK1 4 — that is what decides whether our van shows up or circles.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Expect three points — what got in, approximately how much, plus if the engine has been turned over. Your replies shape all that happens next.

Quarter past eight, a quick top-up on the trip in, and you realise somewhere around eleven — by which time the diesel Renault Megane has been left outside the nearest station for three hours. Phone us then leave it right where it stands. The journey in is the bit that counts here, because diesel performs two roles on its way through a motor: it combusts, and before it combusts it greases its high-pressure fuel pump and those injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. So those couple of miles were covered with your pump labouring on a fluid that had lost most of the protection it is built around — which is why the thing we ask is how many miles you travelled, not how long the car has been parked.

## Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

A large chunk of the job is finished at a forecourt, as that is where it usually kicks off.

If you are still on the forecourt at Tesco, that is typically where this drain happens — we work on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the site's consent.

No place but the forecourt can the mistake be stopped with the motor still unstarted.

The few seconds between seeing your receipt and going for the key settle how much needs rinsing. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was pulled from that tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means the lines and the filter need rinsing as well as your tank. It is not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still deal with it where your car is.

Staff will generally help out pushing it clear of the pump, which lets the next motorist get through. Accept the offer.

Firing it just for four car lengths? Not a chance.

## Will we serve your corner of Camelon?

Camelon is a village, so our vans head out to the town and to the areas by it on the same trips: Bantaskin, Summerford, Merchiston, Tamfourhill and Greenbank.

Our engineers still come. The names above are only the nearest neighbours, and a page exists for nearly all towns around Falkirk, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage.

Near a boundary, or anywhere a satnav gets wrong? Contact us to enquire instead of assuming.

Look at our map for the ground included here.

The lot is ground we serve: a kerbside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You don't drive the car anywhere.

You will be told to shift it out of the gateway and sort it out later. Do not. On the zig-zags by the local primary school, a wrongly fuelled Peugeot 308 running on diesel is in the way, and that is all it is. Crank it three more times being polite and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes the lines, every prime drags more petrol through the filter on to the pump. Let them complain. Phone us.

## Camelon: stuck wherever you stopped

A chance to pull in somewhere sensible does not come to everybody.

If you realised after setting off and finished up along the verge on Main Street, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazards on, that's a routine call for us and not an unusual one.

Fine where you are? Remain by it. Not fine? Climb out and away from it.

It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that is the catch: restart the vehicle to get to somewhere handier and that mix goes further into the fuel system with every mile travelled.

We will bring the van to an awkward spot without any bother, and for your car that's much better than pressing on.

Chance the journey home from The Canal Inn? No. It will start and it will pull away perfectly well, which is the trouble — a diesel on a diluted tank behaves usually whilst grinding the components the fuel should be lubricating. Park the Nissan Qashqai then ring us.

## Already run it? Petrol in a diesel over a few miles

Here is where your M876 comes in — under 3 miles away from Camelon.

A loss of power, an uneven idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they appear, rather than a clean stop — and a misfilled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

The first sensible junction is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone.

Presume the worst of that on a long run. Anything approaching the under 10 miles to the nearest city, and the mixture has been through the filter, through your pump, through your injectors. Mention it when you ring. What we bring alters.

## Camelon itself

Camelon is a village situated on the riverside in Falkirk, with a relatively low elevation of 33 metres. Camelon lies near several smaller communities, including Bantaskin and Summerford, and is close to the city of Stirling. Camelon has a mix of housing types, but is predominantly composed of flats. Camelon is located approximately 9 miles from Stirling and 345 miles from London.

## What follows when our technicians arrive with you around Camelon

- Three things get asked before any quote — the fuel that was put in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.

- The polluted mixture is drawn from your tank.

- What is left in the fuel system shouldn't be what caused the issue, so the fuel lines get flushed and the fuel filter cleaned.

- Your system gets bled, on new diesel.

- Your engine is fired up and tested to confirm it runs properly on new diesel.

After that it's ready to pull away.

Everything is done where your car is, so it never has to go to a workshop, and when it has been noticed early, permanent damage is very uncommon.

Calling from near Falkirk Sheriff Court? Three things help us. The filler — which side of the vehicle it's on. Room for our van alongside you, without the road being blocked. And if anything has run since the fill-up. The location itself barely counts: on-street is where our engineers work most, and we'd far rather have a narrow bay than a motor a person has driven somewhere simpler. Then it's a drain for the Ford Focus, a filter change where there's one worth changing, lines flushed, fresh fuel put round the entire circuit. By now the worst of that is in the lines and not that tank.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Camelon is a distinct matter

The issue isn't the same, though the first step is — don't fire it up — if what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

Petrol weakens your diesel and strips the protection your fuel system depends on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus build-up.

AdBlue removal around Camelon has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it's often the more significant of the two. We handle both.

## Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Camelon

Our engineers can't put one figure on this page frankly, because this job is not one job. What shifts it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, judged against how much that tank can hold.

- The kind of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.

- Where the vehicle is, and if our van can sensibly reach and work on it.

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much went in, and if your motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range.

If it is not time-critical — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

What happens next is the problem. Your engine immediately draws the petrol left resting in the fuel filter and the feed lines back round through your pump a second time, because emptying a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Drain it and put new diesel in, a person certain will tell you — and that advice is only half right, as do it to a diesel BMW 1 Series parked up, Bethany Hall Church say, and the thing starts, which is what makes it sound reasonable. Call us instead. Our technicians flush the circuit and take the fuel filter off where the car has a workable one, and that is the difference between the car being fixed and the vehicle just starting.

## Camelon drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## At a petrol station around Camelon, can you do a fuel drain there?

A fair portion of this work gets done there, so yes.

Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we'll tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the station's consent we visit Esso and the other forecourts around town all the time.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Whether your engine has run matters far more, though the ratio counts too, rather than the litres.

What settles how much work is required is whether that blend has been pulled through the system — since though five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct matter from five in a full one, either way that is the question.

## Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What then?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and leave it off.

Driving takes the issue along — out of that tank, into the pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly helpful thing left to you isn't restarting it.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

It isn't a modification, so a drain then flush carried out properly doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one.

## Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No.

The tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and your pump still has to put up with it.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

There's no need to bring it to a franchised dealer, as our technicians drain and flush your car wherever it is.

## You, and the vehicle, still together?

The motor stays off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting the vehicle after that.

Cold, parked, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. People fear this far more than they need to.

Clearing misfuelled vehicles, Camelon and the rest of Falkirk, wherever they are. Roadside. Forecourt. Home.
