# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Canal Side?

Do not start your engine. While the petrol is still inside your tank and the motor has not yet turned over, a fuel drain is nearly always all it takes — and that's determined in the coming few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled cars where they sit, throughout Canal Side and the rest of South Yorkshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive.

One call to us is plenty: our technicians shall show you what comes after this. Try that first.

## What to do now about petrol in a diesel

- Never fire it up — and do not believe it when it fires up. Here is the part most people have wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol engine fed diesel typically just will not run, so the driver stops and the damage halts with them. A diesel fed petrol usually starts, idles and drives away just fine for a few miles. It's not okay. It is wearing out the fuel system whenever you drive.

- Leave the ignition be as well. Diesel has two tasks: it ignites, and before it burns it lubricates your injection pump and those injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. Turning the ignition on is often all it takes to prime your system, which pulls the petrol out of the tank and into precisely those parts.

- That guidance supposes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you get is a fuller tank of the same mixture. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.

- A vehicle that has not shifted is the simplest one to sort out, and so wait where you are if you reasonably can. Pulled up on the verge on Pennine Road? Hazards on, and keep the vehicle there. A difficult place suits us better than a started engine.

- Before you dial, work out your location. Anything next to you with a label on it, plus a postcode beginning DN8 5 — that's what decides whether our van shows up or circles.

- What got in, approximately how much, and whether your car has fired — the three replies settle the entire call-out. Call 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Never run it home. The journey in has already sent a real amount of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure fuel pump of that Volkswagen Golf, and the trip back would more or less double it for no reason at all. Phone us from the platform if that is quicker. Our technicians don't need you hovering over your car at Thorne South whilst our technicians get on, and we'd much rather talk to you tonight than learn on Monday.

## Clearing petrol from the diesel at a forecourt

Most of this work starts at the pump, so a large chunk of that gets finished at one.

We work on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the station's consent, so if you're still at Texaco that is normally where the drain happens.

At a forecourt, it is spotted with the engine never run, and no place else does it.

Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was switched on and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from that tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure pump. That is not a disaster, and our technicians can still sort it out where it is. It does mean the fuel lines and your filter need rinsing as well as your tank, and that is settled by the few seconds between reading the receipt and going for the keys.

Push the car out of the way if the attendants offer, and they usually will. The next customer gets past the petrol pump, and that's worth doing.

Cranking it just to move four vehicle lengths is not.

Car parks like the one at Heron Foods are a place our technicians work in often, and the fuel is hardly ever the complicated part. The bay is: vehicles either side, a trolley shelter behind, occasionally a height barrier on the way in that decides if a technician can get to you at all. So tell us how hemmed in you are when you call, and which way the car is pointing. If our engineers cannot work alongside the diesel Renault Megane we will move the vehicle without starting it — and that is not fussiness about a few seconds of running. Any start primes the fuel system and pulls more of that blend out of the tank and toward the pump, and so a vehicle moved twice into a roomier space has silently grown into a harder job than one left exactly where it stopped.

## Places our team serve around Canal Side

Thorne, Wike Well End, Brierholme Carr, Hangsman Hill, Moorends — all of these on the rounds that take us across to Canal Side itself, a small village.

Not on this list? It means nothing. The names above are just the nearest few, and nearly all places around South Yorkshire have a page of their own elsewhere on our site.

Close to a boundary, or anywhere your satnav can't find? Contact us to check rather than assuming.

The map is the patch the page includes.

Our technicians work at the roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks over all of that, and the vehicle never needs to move to us.

Nothing alerts you, because from the driver's seat there is nothing to be warned about. The diesel Peugeot 308 will have felt completely ordinary on the way back from Green Top, and they all do — which is the catch with petrol in a diesel instead of the reverse. Diesel in a petrol motor usually refuses to run, stopping the motorist and stopping the wear with them. Petrol in a diesel fires up, ticks over, moves off as though nothing had happened, and all the while the pump keeps working without the protection its fuel is supposed to supply. Tell us approximately how far, and how hard. The harder counts more.

## Stranded at the kerb somewhere around Canal Side?

Some people find no suitable spot to pull over at all.

Hazards flashing in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge beside Cheviot Close since you realised after setting off — we take that call often enough that it's the ordinary kind.

Fine where you are? Stay with it. Not fine? Step out and away from it.

It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that's the trouble: fire it up to get to somewhere better and the mix goes further into the system with every mile travelled.

A technician coming to a difficult location is no bother for us, and it is far better for the vehicle than carrying on.

## So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel after a couple of miles

under a mile out of Canal Side, the local M180 is what matters here.

It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it's some smoke, a lumpy idle and power draining away — not a neat stop. Misfuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Don't restart it to reposition. Come off at the first safe exit and switch off.

It changes what we bring, and so say so when you call: on a longer drive — anything approaching the under 10 miles to the closest city — take it the mixture has been through the filter, your pump and your injectors.

## Where's Canal Side?

Canal Side is a locality situated on the riverside in South Yorkshire, with an elevation of around 4 metres above sea level. Canal Side lies near the cities of Doncaster and other nearby places such as Thorne and Wike Well End. Canal Side has a population of approximately 1501 residents, predominantly living in detached housing. Canal Side is located about 8.9 miles from Doncaster and 149.1 miles from London.

## What our technicians do when we arrive with you in Canal Side

- Our technicians find out what was put in, how much, and whether the motor has run. The replies shape the work, which is why we ask before pricing.

- Out comes the polluted mixture.

- Fuel lines are cleaned through and your filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the fuel system that caused any of this.

- The fuel system gets primed, on new diesel.

- It's run with new diesel in it, and our technicians check that it is running smoothly.

From there, you're ready to pull away.

Permanent damage is very unusual when it has been spotted quickly, and since all of this is done where the car is, it never has to go to a garage.

Our technicians flush your lines rather than only draining your tank, and the reason is that weakened fuel has already got to the fuel filter and the pump: it was a start and a drive, however short. The distance genuinely assists — pulled off the forecourt, receipt read, a diesel BMW 1 Series parked up close to St Nicholas a couple of hundred yards later is about as well as this goes once the engine has turned. Call us then leave it off.

## Canal Side AdBlue removal is a distinct job

If what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first rule is the same — do not start it — yet the fault is not.

Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and strips out the lubrication the system depends on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus deposits.

Both are ours. There is a separate Canal Side page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

Petrol in a diesel does its harm as a share, which is the reason our technicians ask at all: the same few litres resting in a nearly empty tank make a far stronger blend than they would in a full one. And petrol is rated on how well it resists igniting under pressure — the opposite of what a diesel needs — so a stronger blend knocks more, smokes more, goes flatter. None of which means you need an answer prepared. Nearly no one knows how full your tank was in a car picked up two days ago, and we work that out there. Do ring the hire or company firm first, though: some contracts want them to authorise the work, and that's far quicker settled before than after. Then phone us about the Vauxhall Astra by Peel Hill Motte and Bailey Castle.

## Canal Side pricing for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Frankly, no single figure belongs on a page like this. The job differs. Here's what changes it:

- This is the main one: whether the engine has been started, or driven.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.

- The type of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.

- Access: the car's position, and if working on it there is sensible for a van.

Tell us your vehicle, the quantity and whether it has run, and you will get a clear answer rather than a range.

For the vehicle at home that is going nowhere and isn't pressing, is fine too.

## Questions our engineers hear about petrol in diesel in Canal Side

## I'm on a forecourt around Canal Side. Can you drain the car on the spot?

Much of what our technicians do gets done nowhere else. So yes.

Tell us which one you are at when you call and we'll tell you whether we can work there. With the owner's permission our engineers visit Shell and the other forecourts nearby all the time.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

It rests on the proportion rather than the litres, and far more on whether the engine has run.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate scenarios, certainly. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether your fuel system has had that blend pulled through it.

## Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What then?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and keep it off.

Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the problem out of that tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable far more regularly than motorists fear.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, emptying and cleaning is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it.

What is likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the engine to remain off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No.

Your tank still has petrol in it later, and your pump still has to live with it.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Not at all. We drain and flush your car wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a main dealer.

## Standing next to it?

Leave the car switched off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting it after that.

A still, cold motor is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from much more often than drivers expect.

At the roadside, on the forecourt or at home — mobile fuel draining in Canal Side and throughout South Yorkshire.
