# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Carbis Bay?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they sit, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, across Carbis Bay and the rest of Cornwall. The very first thing to do is not to start your engine. When the motor has not turned over and the fuel is still in the tank, a drain is almost always all it requires, and the following few minutes settle that, not how much was put in.

Contact us before all else begins, and you'll learn what comes next.

## Your first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

- Do not fire it up. Started anyway? Then don't rely on it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle normally won't run, and so the motorist stops and the harm stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It pulls away happily, for a few miles. Most people get that backwards. It's not all right — the fuel system is wearing down every mile you do.

- Two tasks, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps your injection pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only manages the one. Which is why your ignition is left off as well — turn it on and you often prime that system, and that's petrol exiting your tank for exactly those parts.

- Do not tip diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system will not tolerate petrol by percentage the way that guidance assumes, and topping up takes out nothing — it just leaves you a bigger tank of the same mix. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.

- Stay where you are if you reasonably can. A motor that has never moved is the simplest one to sort, and we would rather travel to a difficult place than have it started. If you are pulled up on the verge on Higher Boskerris, turn your hazards on and leave the vehicle there.

- Check where you are before ringing. A postcode that starts TR26 2, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than arriving.

- Call 0333 366 0103. Expect three things — what went in, about how much, and whether the motor has been started. Those answers shape whatever follows.

Your high-pressure pump did that morning commute labouring on a fuel that had lost much of the protection it is built around. Diesel greases that pump, and your injectors with it, before any of the fuel ignites; petrol does the burning and none of the oiling. So picture a diesel Skoda Octavia, filled at quarter past eight, taken in to work, and parked standing at the nearest station until the penny drops around eleven. Three hours of sitting have altered nothing about it. The couple of miles before that changed a good deal, which is why the thing our technicians ask you is about miles not hours. Phone us. Leave the vehicle just where it is.

## At a forecourt: draining petrol from your diesel

Pumps are where this work usually kicks off, and where a good share of that closes.

The drain normally takes place there and then. Still on the forecourt at Texaco? Given the station's agreement, that's a place we work, and often.

A forecourt is the one place this gets caught before your engine has run.

Anywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was started and moved to get there, which means fuel was sucked from the tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That's not a disaster, and our technicians can still sort it out where it sits. It does mean the fuel lines and the fuel filter need rinsing as well as that tank, and that is settled by the few seconds between reading your receipt and going for the key.

The attendants will usually happily roll it away from the pump so the next customer can get through. It is worth doing.

Rolling the car four spaces does not justify firing the engine.

## Do we reach your corner of Carbis Bay?

As a coastal village, Carbis Bay sees a steady call, and the villages round about go along on that same journey: Longstone and Trevarrack, Trewartha and Halsetown, Lelant.

Not on the list? It tells you nothing. The names above are simply the closest few, and nearly all locations in Cornwall have a page of their own somewhere on this site.

On a border, or somewhere your satnav struggles with? Ring us to ask rather than assuming.

That map is the patch this page covers.

Every bit of it is ground our engineers serve: a kerbside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You do not bring the vehicle anywhere.

## Stuck on the roadside in Carbis Bay

A chance to pull in anywhere suitable doesn't fall to everybody.

Hazards on in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge beside Richmond Way because you realised after setting off — our technicians take that call so often that it is the ordinary kind.

Fine right there? Stay beside it. Not okay? Get out and away from it.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws the mix further into your fuel system — and oblige it often will, which is why your engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere safer.

Our van driving to a tricky spot is no problem for us, and it is a lot better for your car than pressing on.

## Driven it already? Stop, and see below

This is where the M5 matters, over 50 miles away from Carbis Bay.

Lost power, a lumpy idle, smoke: those are the signs when they come, rather than a neat stop — and a misfuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

Come off at the first sensible junction, turn off, and do not start the car to reposition.

Presume the worst of it on a long trip. Anything close to the under 25 miles to the closest city, and the petrol has been through the fuel filter, through your pump, through the fuel injectors. Say so when you phone. What our engineers bring alters.

Your pump is not turning, and so whatever your diesel BMW 5 Series did on the way to Richmond Gardens, none of it is going on now. Nothing gets worse while it stands. Take your time over this — but do not drive it home to buy any.

## A bit about Carbis Bay

Carbis Bay is a coastal village in Cornwall, situated on the southwestern tip of England, approximately 249.9 miles from London. Carbis Bay sits at an elevation of 87 metres, overlooking the sea and surrounded by nearby places such as Longstone, Trevarrack, and Trewartha. Carbis Bay is characterised by its predominantly detached housing stock, reflecting its appeal as a residential location. Carbis Bay remains a popular spot, with its population of around 2287 people enjoying the coastal setting and proximity to Truro, 19 miles away.

## What follows when we get to you around Carbis Bay

- Our engineers check what got in, how much, and whether your motor has run. The replies alter the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price.

- Our technicians clear the tank of all the polluted mixture.

- Lines flushed, filter cleared. Whatever is left afterwards is not the thing that started the trouble.

- Priming follows, once fresh diesel is in.

- The motor is started and checked to be sure it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

Then it is ready to drive away.

Lasting damage is very uncommon when it has been spotted quickly, and because all of this is done where your car is, it never has to go to a workshop.

Pulled off the forecourt, read your receipt, and left the diesel Audi A6 up by Carbis Bay Wesley Methodist Church a couple of hundred yards later? That's about as well as this goes once your engine has turned. Phone us and leave the car off. The short drive truly helps, but it was still a start and a drive, so thinned fuel has arrived at the filter and your pump — which is why we purge the fuel lines rather than only clearing your tank.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, around Carbis Bay?

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first step is unchanged — your motor remains off — whereas this fault beneath it is a separate one altogether.

The protection a fuel system depends on gets stripped away by petrol, which thins your diesel.

Rust and deposits are what a diesel tank gets instead, since AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Both are ours. There is a separate Carbis Bay page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

Rattling, an uneven idle, white smoke, a throttle gone soft. That's a misfilled diesel Mercedes A-Class telling you what is wrong. Switch off where you have stopped, near St Ives Archive or anywhere else, and never start it to find a better spot.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in Carbis Bay?

One number wouldn't be honest here, as this is not one job. These are the things that change it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.

- Which got in: petrol or AdBlue.

- Access: the car's position, and if working on it there's safe for our van.

A straight answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the quantity, and if it has run.

For your car at home that is going nowhere and is not pressing, works too.

The filter, the fuel lines, the pump and its rail: that is where that blend is once a diesel has run, and it doesn't come back out with your tank contents. So the tank isn't where most of the trouble waits by this point, and a diesel Volkswagen Touran that got by St Anta and All Saints needs the system cleared instead of cleared.

## Carbis Bay drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## At a petrol station in Carbis Bay, can you do a fuel drain there?

Much of what our technicians do gets done nowhere else. So yes.

Tell us which one you're at when you call and we will tell you if we can work there. With the station's agreement we work at another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts nearby all the time.

## Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

It hinges on the proportion rather than the litres, and much more on whether your motor has run.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct situations, certainly. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if the system has had that mix drawn through it.

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. What now?

Turn off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop.

Driving is what moves the trouble from your tank into your pump and injectors — but it is fixable much more frequently than motorists expect, and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart the car.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain and flush done to a proper standard, which is no change at all.

A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

## Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No.

After that? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

No. We drain and clean your car wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a main dealer.

## You, and the car, still together?

Turned off is how the car stays.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting the vehicle after that.

Cold and stationary, a car is in the best place available — and motorists fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.

Mobile fuel draining around Carbis Bay and throughout Cornwall — at the roadside, on the forecourt or at home.
