# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Carlisle? Don't Start It

With that tank still holding the fuel and your engine not yet turned over, nearly every job requires only a drain, so leave your engine off. That result is decided in the minutes right after the fill-up, and not by the amount that got in. Throughout Carlisle and the rest of Cumbria, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and flushes it where it sits, whether at a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt.

Call us so we can tell you what follows from here before you do any more.

## Your first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

- Don't start the vehicle. Started anyway? Then never trust it. Diesel in a petrol motor typically can't run, and so the motorist stops and the damage stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It pulls away fine, for a few miles. Motorists get that confused. It is not all right — your fuel system is grinding every mile you drive.

- Two things, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps that injection pump and injectors greased. Petrol only manages the one. That is why the car's ignition is left off also — turn it on and you often prime your system, and that is petrol exiting that tank for exactly those components.

- Do not tip diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system does not accept petrol by percentage in the way that guidance implies, and topping up takes out nothing — it only hands you a bigger tank of the same blend. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.

- Stay still if it's wise to. Hazards on, engine off, leave the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Lowther Street, anywhere — a difficult location for us trumps a started diesel, and nothing is simpler for us to sort out than a car that never shifted.

- Find out where you are before calling. A postcode starting CA3 8, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than showing up.

- Phone 0333 366 0103. Tell us what got in, approximately how many litres, and also whether your car has run. Those three facts determine the full visit.

Do not take it home. The drive in has already forced a real volume of petrol-thinned diesel through your high-pressure pump of your Volkswagen Golf, and the drive back would more or less double it for no gain at all. Ring us from the platform if that's quicker. Our technicians don't need you hovering over the vehicle at the nearest station whilst our engineers work, and we'd much rather hear from you tonight than learn on Monday.

## Can petrol be pumped out of a diesel on a forecourt?

Plenty of the work begins at a forecourt, meaning a large share of it ends up done there.

Our technicians work on station forecourts all the time, with the owner's permission, so if you're still at JET that is typically where the drain gets done.

The forecourt is the one setting this is halted before your motor has fired.

The few seconds between checking the till receipt and going for the keys decide how much requires flushing. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was switched on and driven to get there, so fuel was drawn from the tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the lines and the fuel filter require flushing as well as your tank. It is not a catastrophe, and we can still deal with it where the vehicle is.

Out from the pump, the next customer can get through — so yes, let the attendants help you wheel the car. Very much worth doing.

Cranking the car to shift four car lengths is not.

## Areas our vans cover in Carlisle

Denton Holme, Caldewgate, Stanwix, Willow Holme, Longsowerby — each of them on our trips that carry us over to Carlisle too, a cathedral city.

If yours isn't on the list that does not mean we never come — there are dedicated pages for nearly all places around Cumbria, and the ones mentioned above are merely the closest neighbours.

Call us to check rather than assuming — county lines above all, and anywhere your satnav may misread.

The patch the page includes is on our map.

Roadside, forecourt, drive, car park: all of that is territory our technicians cover, and none of that asks your car to move to us.

Shift the car out of the gateway and fix it later — that is what somebody will say, and it is wrong. Stopped on the zig-zags at Brook Street Primary School, a misfuelled diesel Audi A4 is a nuisance and nothing worse. Restarted three more times for politeness, it is no longer a tank problem but a fuel system one, as priming happens with every start and more petrol goes through the filter towards the pump. Let people complain. Give us a call.

## Broken down at the roadside in Carlisle

Not everybody gets a chance to pull in anywhere safe.

A normal call for us rather than an odd one: realised after setting off, landed on the verge on Warwick Road or at a lay-by with the hazard lights on.

Clear of the car while it isn't sensible to sit inside, beside it when it is.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls that mix further into the fuel system — and oblige it usually will, which is why the engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere handier.

Driving on does the car far more harm than our van coming out to a difficult spot, and that's no trouble for us.

## Petrol in a diesel, and your car has gone

Here is where the M6 comes into it — under 3 miles from Carlisle.

It will frequently get you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it is smoke, a lumpy idle and power falling away — not a clean stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Get off at the next safe junction, turn off, and never restart it to move it.

It changes what our technicians bring, so tell us when you ring: on a longer trip — anything near the over 50 miles to the nearest city — assume the mixture has been through the fuel filter, the pump and your injectors.

A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically: the fuel has to hold pressure, not merely burn. Thin that fuel and pressure which should build and stay built escapes past tolerances instead, leaving the motor a poorer, later, less even delivery than it was engineered around. Petrol dilutes diesel, and diesel has to be thick enough to seal the precision components it runs through — that's the entire mechanism. It explains the normal Chatsworth Garden call too: a diesel Vauxhall Astra that travelled out without a murmur and came back down on power, uneven at idle, possibly smoking a little. None of which is the motor failing, and that's the part worth hearing. Your fuel has stopped acting like diesel. Put the fuel right and it stops.

## Where is Carlisle?

Carlisle is a city located in the north of Cumbria, England, situated near the Scottish border on the River Eden. Carlisle sits at an elevation of 29 metres, with the nearby suburbs of Denton Holme and Caldewgate forming part of its urban area. Carlisle is a significant residential centre, with a population of approximately 66,412 people, predominantly living in semi-detached housing. Carlisle is also close to other neighbourhoods, including Stanwix, and is 52.8 miles from Newcastle upon Tyne.

## The job in Carlisle, step by step

- We check what went in, how much, and if your engine has run. The responses shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price.

- Our technicians drain your tank of the polluted mixture.

- Lines rinsed, filter cleared. Whatever is left later is not the thing that created the issue.

- Clean diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets primed.

- It is fired up with fresh diesel in it, and we confirm that it's running correctly.

At that point it's ready to drive away.

Permanent damage is very unusual when it has been spotted quickly, and since everything is done where the vehicle is, it never has to be taken to a workshop.

Three things help when you phone from near William, 1st Earl of Lonsdale Statue: which side the filler is on, whether a technician can pull up alongside without blocking the road, and whether the engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the usual location our technicians work, and so the place itself is rarely the trouble — we would much rather deal with a tight parking spot than with a car that has been driven to somewhere more handy. We'll drain your Kia Sportage, change your filter where there is a serviceable one, flush the lines and put fresh fuel through the entire system, as by this point the worst of it is resting in your lines instead of in that tank.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, in Carlisle?

Do not crank it: that first rule holds whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is the issue itself.

Petrol thins your diesel and takes away the protection the fuel system relies on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus deposits.

Our engineers cover both, and AdBlue removal in Carlisle has its own page with the full story — including why it's frequently the more serious of the two.

Authorisation first, where there is a hire firm or a company behind the car — some agreements require it, and settling that beforehand saves a great deal of time later. After that, ring us about the diesel Peugeot 2008 near Carlisle Crown & County Court. You'll not know how full the tank was. Barely anybody does, two days into a car, and it gets worked out on the spot anyway. We ask since the harm petrol does in a diesel is proportional: a few litres in an almost empty tank make a much stronger blend than the same few in a full one, and since petrol is built to resist igniting under pressure, which is exactly what a diesel relies on, the stronger it gets the more your engine knocks and smokes and flattens off.

## What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs around Carlisle

One number would not be honest here, as this isn't one job. These are the things that move it:

- This is the main one: whether your engine has been started, or driven.

- Wrong fuel in, against what the tank takes — that ratio.

- Which got in: petrol or AdBlue.

- Where your vehicle is, and whether a technician can safely get to and work on it.

Tell us what your car is, how much got in, and if the engine has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range.

For your car at home that's going nowhere and is not pressing, works too.

## Carlisle motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

## At a petrol station in Carlisle, can you do a fuel drain there?

A fair share of this work gets done there, so yes.

Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we'll tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the station's permission we attend Sainsbury's and the other forecourts around town routinely.

## A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres aren't the measure. Ratio is, and far more than either, it counts if anything has been run.

Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mix been pulled right through, or has it not?

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Turn off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop.

Driving takes the problem along — out of the tank, into the pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly useful thing left to you isn't restarting the vehicle.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A drain then flush carried out properly isn't a modification and doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty.

What's likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the engine to remain off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a separate fault and it doesn't put back what petrol has weakened.

Your pump still has to live with it, since your tank still has petrol in it later on.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Not at all. Our technicians drain and flush the car wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

## Standing next to it?

Switched off is the way the car stays.

If you have already driven the car, pull in somewhere sensible, turn it off and leave it off.

Cold and parked, a motor is in the best position available — and motorists fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.

Call-out fuel draining in Carlisle and across Cumbria — at the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home.
