# Carlton: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Never fire up your engine. While the fuel is still sitting in that tank and your engine has not turned over, a tank drain is almost always all it requires — and that is determined in the next few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled cars where they stand, across Carlton and the rest of Bedfordshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway.

Our technicians will tell you what the following move is. Ring us — this comes ahead of anything else.

## What to do now about petrol in a diesel

- Don't crank it — and do not rely on it if it fires up. That is the bit motorists get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol engine fed diesel generally just cannot run, so the motorist stops and the damage stops with them. A diesel fed petrol typically starts, ticks over and drives off perfectly well for a couple of miles. It isn't okay. It is wearing the fuel system whenever you drive.

- Diesel burns, and before it combusts it greases — your high-pressure pump, its injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the car's ignition off also: flicking it on is usually all it takes to prime your system, and priming moves petrol from your tank into precisely those components.

- Do not weaken it. Diesel added on top gets rid of nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The octane makes no difference.

- We would much rather come to an odd spot than have it started — so if you safely can, stay still. Nothing is easier to sort than a car that hasn't shifted. On the verge on The Marsh, that means hazards on and keep it.

- Before you ring, have your whereabouts. Anything nearest to you with a name on it, plus a postcode beginning MK43 7 — that is what decides whether our van turns up or circles.

- What was put in, roughly how many litres, and whether the engine has fired — those three facts shape your whole visit. Phone 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Tonight, please, not Monday. Taking it home is the only thing not to do: a commute has put real quantity through the pump already, petrol-thinned diesel and plenty of that, and the return leg would close to double the figure to no purpose. The Nissan Qashqai can wait outside Bedford perfectly happily. Phone from the platform if handier; standing over us while we work isn't required.

## Draining petrol from a diesel on the forecourt

A fair chunk of the work ends up completed at a pump, since that's where it usually begins.

We work on garage forecourts routinely, with the site's permission, and so if you're still at Pod Garage Supplies that's typically where this drain gets done.

A forecourt is the single place it can be caught before the engine has started.

Fuel pulled out of that tank and through the fuel filter, right to your high-pressure pump, is what occurs when your engine is fired up and your car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in the filter and your lines together with that tank. That's still not a catastrophe, and we deal with it where the car is. What settles it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after the till receipt was read.

Attendants will normally pitch in pushing it away from the petrol pump, which lets the next driver get past. Welcome the help.

Four vehicle lengths is not worth the risk.

## Do our technicians reach your corner of Carlton?

Chellington, Emmaus Village Carlton, Harrold, Little Odell, Odell — all of them on the rounds that bring us out to Carlton itself, a rural village.

Our technicians still come. Those names above are merely the closest neighbours, and a page is there for the majority of towns around Bedfordshire, so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage.

Near the boundary, or anywhere your phone misreads? Ring us and check rather than guessing.

The area the page includes is on our map.

Every bit of that is territory our technicians serve: a roadside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You do not bring your vehicle anywhere.

Put diesel in a petrol vehicle and mostly it will not run, so the motorist stops there and the wear stops with them. Swap it — petrol into a diesel — and the thing fires up, idles and pulls away as though nothing had happened, while the high-pressure fuel pump works without the lubrication the fuel is supposed to be providing. That's the catch, and it is why the diesel Mercedes C-Class will have felt entirely ordinary coming back from Carlton CofE Primary School. They always do. From the driver's seat there's nothing to warn you about, and so nothing alerts you. Ring us with approximately how far you travelled, and how hard; the second one matters more than the first.

## Stuck at the kerbside somewhere around Carlton?

Not everyone finds a sensible place to pull over.

Set off, then noticed? Finished up along the verge of The Moor, or sat in some lay-by with your hazards flashing? That is a normal call here. Not an unusual one.

Sit by the car while it's wise to sit inside, and out of it when it isn't.

Do not restart it to get to a safer spot. It will go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws the mixture deeper into the system.

However awkward the location, it is no trouble for us to get to it, and that's far better for the car than pressing on.

A diesel Peugeot 3008 parked in the parking area outside The Fox holding a tank full of petrol in it is an easy job, right up until somebody drives it home. Leave the car there overnight and phone us in the morning. Nothing worsens while it sits. What we'll want to know is whether the run there was short and cold, because that is where petrol is slowest to burn correctly — and anything that does not burn can get past the rings and into the oil.

## Already run it? Petrol in a diesel over a few miles

Here is where the local M1 comes in — under 10 miles away from Carlton.

Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a clean stop. Power ebbs away, your idle goes uneven, and there may be smoke.

Take the first exit that's sensible, stop there, and never restart the car to move it.

Long trip? Anything approaching the under 15 miles to the closest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that reached by the contamination. Say that on the phone, as it affects what goes in the van.

Do not drive it home to buy yourself time. You already have it: nothing gets worse while the vehicle sits, as a diesel Vauxhall Astra left at Harrold-Odell Country Park is doing none of what it did on the way there. The pump has stopped turning.

## A bit about Carlton

Carlton is a small village in Bedfordshire, situated in the eastern part of the county, with an elevation of around 48 metres. Carlton lies near the villages of Chellington and Harrold, and is home to the Emmaus Village Carlton community. Carlton has a population of approximately 548 people, predominantly living in detached houses. Carlton is located about 51 miles from London and 12 miles from Milton Keynes.

## What comes next when our engineers arrive with you around Carlton

- We ask first, quote after. What was put in? How much? Has your engine run? Those responses change what the work really is.

- We drain that tank of the tainted fuel.

- What is left in your system should not be what created the trouble, so your fuel lines get purged and your filter cleared.

- Fresh diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets bled.

- After it's fired up, our engineers check it runs smoothly on new diesel.

From there, you're ready to set off.

Permanent damage is very rare when it has been noticed quickly, and as everything is done where the car is, it never needs to go to a garage.

Hardly ever the trouble, the place. On-street is the usual location our engineers work, and a narrow parking bay is far preferable to a vehicle that has been driven somewhere more convenient. What does help, when you call from near St Mary's, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether a technician can pull up alongside without blocking the road, and if anything has run since you filled up. Then the Audi Q5 gets cleared, the fuel filter changed where a usable one exists, your lines flushed and clean fuel put through the whole circuit — because by now the worst of that is in the fuel lines, not your tank.

## Carlton AdBlue removal is a distinct problem

If what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening instruction is the same — never fire it up — yet the problem is not.

Petrol weakens the diesel and strips the protection your fuel system depends on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus build-up.

Both are ours. There is a separate Carlton page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

## Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Carlton

One number wouldn't be honest here, since this isn't one job. These are the things that change it:

- Whether the motor has been started or driven. This is the big one.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, set against how much that tank can hold.

- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever got in.

- Whether a technician can sensibly reach your vehicle and work on it, which hinges on where the vehicle is.

A firm answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the quantity, and whether it has run.

Not time-critical, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.

## Carlton motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Carlton?

Yes, and it's where a good share of this work happens.

Often, provided the site agrees: Applegreen, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that place is something our technicians answer there and then.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

It depends on the ratio instead of the litres, and far more on whether your motor has run.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different scenarios, of course. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether the fuel system has had that mix sucked through it.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Turn off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop.

It is recoverable much more commonly than motorists fear, even though driving is what takes the trouble from your tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

It isn't a change, and so a drain then flush carried out correctly doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one, which is another reason to leave the vehicle switched off.

## Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a different fault and it does not restore what petrol has diluted.

The pump still has to put up with it, as your tank still has petrol in it after that.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

There's no need to take it to a main dealer, as our technicians drain and clean the car wherever it is.

## Still with your car?

Keep the engine shut off.

Turn it off somewhere safe and keep it off, if you have already driven it.

This is recoverable from far more commonly than motorists fear, and a parked, cold vehicle is the best position to be in.
