# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Carnwath?

With that tank still holding the fuel and the engine not yet run, almost every job takes only a drain, so leave the engine off. That result is determined in the minutes right after filling up, rather than by the amount that went in. Across Carnwath and the remainder of South Lanarkshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and flushes it where it sits, whether at a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt.

Our engineers shall tell you what the following stage will be. Call us — it goes before anything else.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to try now

- Never fire it up. Fired up regardless? Then don't believe it. Diesel in a petrol motor usually won't run, and so the person stops and the wear stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It pulls away happily, for several miles. Most people get that muddled. It is not fine — that fuel system is grinding every mile you cover.

- Two jobs, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure fuel pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only handles the one. That is why the car's ignition stays off too — flick it on and you usually prime the system, and that is petrol exiting your tank for just those components.

- Topping up clears nothing. It leaves you a fuller tank of the same mixture, since a diesel fuel system won't cope with petrol by percentage as that guidance suggests — so do not pour diesel on top to dilute it. Octane is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.

- Stay still if it's sensible to. Hazards on, motor off, keep it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Biggar Road, anywhere — a tricky location for us trumps a started motor, and nothing is easier for us to sort out than a car that never shifted.

- Before you phone, have your position. Anything closest to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode beginning ML11 8 — that's what settles whether our van shows up or circles.

- What got in, approximately how much, and if your car has fired — these three answers settle the entire job. Phone 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Quarter past eight, a rushed top-up on the drive in, and it dawns on you somewhere around eleven — by then the diesel Volkswagen Golf has been left at Carstairs for three hours. Phone and keep the car precisely where it sits. The drive in is the thing that counts most, because diesel performs two roles on its way through an engine: it ignites, and before it burns it protects that high-pressure fuel pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. So those couple of miles were done with the pump working on a liquid that had shed much of the protection it is made for — which is why the thing our engineers ask is how far you went, not how long the vehicle has been parked.

## On a forecourt: clearing petrol from your diesel

Most of the job begins at a pump, meaning a large portion of that gets done there.

The drain usually takes place on the spot. Still on the forecourt at the nearest petrol station? Given the owner's permission, that is a spot we work, and regularly.

Before the engine has run — a forecourt is the one setting the mistake ends up spotted.

Fuel sucked out of your tank and through your filter, all the way to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what happens when the motor is fired up and the vehicle is driven to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers your filter and your lines along with that tank. That is still not a disaster, and our engineers put it right where the car sits. What determines it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after the till receipt was checked.

The staff will normally help you roll the vehicle clear of the pump so the next driver can get through. That's worth doing.

Starting the car over four car lengths? Never.

## Carnwath and the areas near it

West End, Spittal, Kaimend, Carstairs Junction, Newbigging — every one of those on the runs that bring us across to Carnwath as well, a village.

If yours is not on that list it does not mean we never come — there are dedicated pages for the majority of locations around South Lanarkshire, and the ones named above are just the nearest neighbours.

Phone and enquire rather than guessing — borders especially, and anywhere a satnav might misread.

The map shows the area the page includes.

Every bit of that is territory our technicians cover: a kerbside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You do not bring the car anywhere.

## Broken down on the roadside near Carnwath

A chance to pull in somewhere sensible doesn't fall to everyone.

A common call for us instead of an odd one: noticed after setting off, finished up by the verge on Main Street or at a lay-by with the hazards going.

Okay right there? Stay with it. Not fine? Get out and clear of it.

It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that's the problem: fire it up to reach somewhere handier and that mixture goes further into the system with every mile travelled.

Pressing on does the car far more harm than our van driving out to a difficult place, and that is no problem for us.

## Petrol in a diesel, but the motor has moved

This is where the local M74 matters, under 15 miles out of Carnwath.

It will often take you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is some smoke, a lumpy idle and power ebbing away — not a clean stop. Misfilled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Do not start it to move it. Get off at the next safe junction and switch off.

It affects what our technicians bring, so tell us when you call: on a longer trip — anything near the under 25 miles to the closest city — assume the mixture has been through your filter, the pump and the injectors.

Nothing is getting worse while it sits. Whatever the diesel Mercedes C-Class did on the way to Carnwath Golf Club, it is doing none of that now: your pump is not turning. So take your time — but do not drive it home to buy yourself any.

## Carnwath itself

Carnwath is a village in South Lanarkshire, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 219 metres. Carnwath lies approximately 24 miles southwest of Edinburgh and is characterised by its predominantly terraced housing. Carnwath is part of a wider rural landscape, with nearby villages including West End, Spittal, and Kaimend. Carnwath has a population of around 1315 residents.

## What we do when our technicians reach you around Carnwath

- Three things get checked before any price — the fuel that went in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.

- We drain that tank of the tainted fuel.

- Fuel lines are cleaned through and the fuel filter cleared, leaving nothing in the fuel system that created any of this.

- We put clean diesel in and bleed the system.

- It's run with fresh diesel in it, and we confirm that it's running correctly.

From there, you are ready to pull away.

Lasting damage is very rare when it has been noticed early, and as all of this is done where your car is, it never needs to be taken to a garage.

The pump rests ahead of your injectors, and so whatever a wearing one loses passes on with your fuel — which is why we are blunt about not driving on. Ring us, and leave the diesel Dacia Duster where it's near Market Cross.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, in Carnwath?

Don't crank it: that opening instruction applies whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is the problem itself.

Diluted diesel, and no protection left for the fuel system that depends on it. That is petrol.

Corrosion and deposits are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, because AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Often the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story sits on its own Carnwath page. Both are ours to handle.

Rattling? Lumpy idle? White smoke, throttle gone soft? That is your misfuelled Ford Kuga, a diesel, saying what's wrong with it. Stop wherever you happen to be, maybe near Carnwath Hall, and leave the restarting alone.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in Carnwath?

One number would not be honest here, as this isn't one job. These are the things that shift it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, measured against how much the tank takes.

- Whether it was petrol or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can our van get to it and work there safely?

The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear rather than as a range.

Car at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is fine for that.

It got a few streets and stopped. The throttle went soft, the idle turned ragged, and the diesel BMW X1 is now waiting by Carnwath Community and Business Enterprise Hub. That deadness is your fuel failing to build pressure correctly not your engine failing — and since there is no dashboard light for it, motors in that position normally get driven once more before anybody calls. Do not. Turn it off then ring us.

## Carnwath drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## Fuel drains on a Carnwath petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a good share of this happens.

Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like another forecourt nearby is somewhere we're regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear if working there's possible.

## Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

Ratio settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run.

What determines how much work is required is if that mixture has been drawn through the fuel system — since although five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one, either way that is the query.

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. What next?

Stop somewhere safe, switch off, then leave the car off.

Driving takes the issue along — out of the tank, into your pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely useful thing left to you isn't restarting it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain then flush carried out correctly isn't a change and does not void a manufacturer's warranty.

A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. It belongs to a different fault from a different era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind restores.

After that? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Not at all. Our technicians drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a dealership.

## You, and the car, still together?

Don't turn your engine on again.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere safe, turn off, then let it remain that way.

Cold and stationary, a car is in the best place available — and people fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.

Throughout South Lanarkshire and in Carnwath: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
