# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Castelnau?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, across Castelnau and the remainder of Greater London. The very first thing to do is not to start your engine. While the motor has not yet turned over and the fuel is still in your tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it takes, and the next few minutes determine that, not how much went in.

Ring us before everything else starts, and you'll know what happens from there.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to try now

- As you drive, the pump and the injectors wear down. That's why you never crank it, and why you never depend on it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel specifically — the bit motorists get wrong — is that it pulls away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine typically cannot run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the wear with them. This one lets you keep going.

- Leave your ignition be too. Diesel has two roles: it ignites, and before it combusts it lubricates the high-pressure pump and its injectors. Petrol does the first and not the second. Turning your ignition on is often enough to prime your system, which pulls the petrol out of the tank and into precisely those parts.

- Never dilute it. Diesel put on top removes nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The type makes no difference.

- A motor that has never shifted is the easiest one to sort, so wait where you are if you safely can. Parked on the verge on Lonsdale Road? Hazards on, then keep the vehicle there. An odd location works for us better than a started diesel.

- Before you ring, work out your location. Anything nearest to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode beginning SW13 9 — that's what settles whether the van turns up or circles.

- Three replies decide your whole visit: the stuff you put in, the ballpark measure involved, and whether it has been running since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.

## Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel

The job starts at a pump, typically. Frequently the work wraps up on site as well.

If you're still at the forecourt at Esso, that's typically where this drain happens — we operate on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the site's agreement.

A forecourt is the only setting this is stopped before your motor has run.

Fuel sucked out of that tank and through the fuel filter, right to the high-pressure pump, is what occurs when your engine is switched on and the vehicle is moved to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers the fuel filter and your lines as well as that tank. That's still not a calamity, and we deal with it where the vehicle sits. What determines it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after the till receipt was checked.

The attendants will usually offer to roll the car clear of the pump so the next motorist can get past. It is worth doing.

Starting the car to roll four car lengths is not.

Tell us this much and our engineers can work with it: a diesel BMW 3 Series, some litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, switched off outside Istanbul Organic Supermarket now. Time passed isn't the thing we need. Fuel pulled by your pump is.

## Can we cover your side of Castelnau?

Castelnau is a residential suburb, so our technicians get out to the town and to the villages by it on the usual trips: Hammersmith, Brook Green, Barnes, West Kensington and Chiswick.

There are pages for nearly all towns around Greater London, and the ones mentioned above are just the immediate neighbours — so yours being left off the list says nothing whatsoever about whether our technicians come.

Phone to check rather than presuming, especially if you're on the boundary or anywhere your satnav struggles with.

That map is the ground the page spans.

We operate at the roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks across all of it, and your vehicle doesn't need to move to us.

Twenty to nine. Outside Lowther Primary School. Late already, and your receipt in your hand reads unleaded. Turn your hazards on, leave the engine alone, then ring us. You might think three miles is nothing, in your Peugeot 308 or anything else — except that fuel is supplied on demand, and a drive taken in a hurry demands a great deal of that.

## Castelnau: broken down wherever you stopped

The opportunity to stop anywhere safe doesn't fall to everybody.

Set off, then realised? Finished up by the verge on Castelnau, or parked in some lay-by with the hazard lights on? That is a common call here. Not an odd one.

Okay right there? Remain by it. Not okay? Get out and clear of it.

It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the trouble: restart it to get to somewhere handier and the blend goes further into the system with every mile driven.

However awkward the location, it's no trouble for us to get to it, and that's far better for the vehicle than carrying on.

Try the drive home from The Bridge? Not a chance. It will fire up and it will drive off quite happily, which is the trouble — a diesel on a weakened tank behaves normally while wearing down the parts the fuel should be protecting. Park the Mercedes E-Class and phone.

## Driven it already? Pull in, then read this

This is where the local M4 comes in — under 3 miles from Castelnau.

Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will usually manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a neat stop. Power falls away, your idle goes uneven, and there may be some smoke.

The first sensible junction is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone.

Assume the worst of that on a long drive. Anything near the under 5 miles to the nearest city, and the contamination has been through the filter, through your pump, through the fuel injectors. Say so when you call. What our engineers bring changes.

Here is the entire mechanism. Diesel needs enough body to seal the fine gaps it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That's it. Which accounts for the normal Riverview Gardens call — a diesel Vauxhall Astra, out there without complaint and back down on power, lumpy at idle, perhaps a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, so your fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; thinned, it escapes past those tolerances and not building, and delivery comes weaker, later, less even than the engine was designed around. Not a failing motor, though. Fuel that has stopped acting like diesel. Put that right and it stops.

## Where's Castelnau?

Castelnau is a suburban area in southwest London, situated on the banks of the River Thames. Castelnau sits at a low elevation of around 7 metres, with lakeside views and proximity to nearby Hammersmith and Brook Green. Castelnau is characterized by its predominantly flat-type housing, with a mix of old and new developments. Castelnau is close to the city centre, with Westminster just 4.7 miles away.

## Once our technicians reach you in Castelnau: what happens

- Our technicians check what got in, how much, and whether your motor has run. The answers change the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting.

- The contaminated mixture comes from the tank.

- Lines flushed, filter cleaned. Whatever remains later on isn't the thing that caused the trouble.

- Fresh diesel goes in, and then your system gets bled.

- It is fired up with clean diesel in it, and our technicians check that it's running correctly.

After that it's ready to pull away.

There's no need to go to a garage at any point, because the work is all done where your car is, and when it's noticed early, long-term damage is very uncommon.

## Castelnau AdBlue removal is a different job

Do not fire it up: that first step holds whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is the problem itself.

Weakened diesel, and no lubrication left for your fuel system that relies on it. That is petrol.

Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to rust and residue.

Often the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the full story sits on its own Castelnau page. Both are ours to deal with.

## Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Castelnau

Frankly, no single number fits on a page like this. The job varies. Here's what moves it:

- This is the main one: whether your engine has been started, or driven.

- Wrong fuel in, against what the tank holds — that proportion.

- The type of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.

- Whether our van can safely reach the car and work on it, which rests on where the car is.

The car, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight and not as a range.

Not urgent, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

That sluggishness is the fuel failing to build pressure properly, not the motor giving up — and with no dashboard light for it, vehicles in that position generally get driven again before somebody calls. Don't. A couple of streets is all it got: throttle gone soft, idle turned uneven, and a diesel Volkswagen Touran now resting close to Lancelot 'Capability' Brown. Turn the car off and call us.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Castelnau drivers

## Fuel drains on a Castelnau petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it's where a large part of this work gets done.

Our engineers attend BP and the other forecourts nearby all the time, with the site's permission — tell us which one you're at when you call and we'll tell you whether our engineers can work there.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres are not the measure. Ratio is, and a lot more than either, it matters if anything has been run.

Five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is required is whether that mix has been drawn through the system.

## Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What then?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and leave it off.

Driving shifts the issue along — out of your tank, into your pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly helpful thing left to you isn't restarting it.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain then flush done to a good standard, which is no change at all.

An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

What petrol has diluted isn't restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a different fault. So no.

Petrol remains in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Wherever the car is, our technicians drain and clean it there, so a visit to the main dealer does not come into it.

## Is your vehicle still with you?

The motor remains off.

If you have already driven the car, stop somewhere sensible, turn it off and keep it off.

This is recoverable from a lot more frequently than motorists assume, and a still, cold vehicle is the best place to be in.

Call-out fuel draining around Castelnau and across Greater London — at the roadside, on the forecourt or at home.
