# The Next Steps, in Order: Petrol in a Diesel Car in Caulcott

Stop. Motor off. Leave the car that way — no second on, no moving it at all.

Has not been run? Then petrol in a diesel will usually be a straightforward drain-and-flush job wherever the car has stopped — and no other factor decides that more than these next few minutes do.

Below is the sequence from this point, wherever in Caulcott you are.

## Engine off: minute one with petrol in a diesel

Do these before anything else, in this sequence.

- The keys out of your ignition. Switching the ignition on can be enough to prime the system, and priming pulls petrol out of your tank toward the components it harms. Leave the car off completely.

- A bigger tank of the same mix is all adding diesel gives you, since it removes nothing. So no more diesel.

- Hazards on. If you're at all near moving traffic, make the car simple to see before you do anything else.

- Off the petrol pump by hand. On a forecourt, get the staff to help you roll the vehicle away from the petrol pump. Don't start it to move it, however short the way.

- Hold on to the receipt. It shows which fuel got in plus roughly how much, which is the first thing we'll ask.

Still driving when you noticed? Come off the M1 at the next exit if that's where you are, under 5 miles from Caulcott, and pull over somewhere sensible and not pushing on to the services. Then begin at stage one.

## Each Caulcott fuel drain starts here: has your motor run?

Everything after this point depends on one answer.

If it has never been started:

- The petrol is still inside your tank and nowhere else.

- A drain and flush, on the spot, is normally the whole job.

- This, here, is the best place to be in, and the whole reason stage one counts.

Engine run, however briefly?

- Some petrol has left your tank by now, gone through the fuel filter, and got into the fuel lines.

- A bigger run carries it all the way to your high-pressure pump and your injectors.

- Flushing your lines, your filter sorted, and sometimes more: the job expands as the mileage does.

Why the line falls there: diesel lubricates the high-pressure fuel pump as well as your injectors as it passes through them, and petrol does not.

In your tank, sitting still, petrol harms nothing.

As soon as it is pumped, petrol starts wearing down whatever moves it.

## Caulcott, petrol in a diesel: have these ready before you call

Whether the van goes round or finds you comes down to a little planning.

- Where you have stopped. A postcode beginning MK43 0 is the best start.

- A road name helps: Lakeview, say, or whatever street you've stopped in. A car park does the trick too.

- Or the nearest landmark. A car park is quicker to find by what it serves, such as the one at The Co-operative Food.

- Tell us what your car is — make, model — and confirm it is diesel.

- Which went in counts: AdBlue is a separate job from petrol, and Caulcott has a page just for that. So say.

- How long the nozzle was in, or the litres from your receipt — whichever gives us how much.

- If it's run, how far plus how heavily — and whether it has run at all.

- Whose vehicle it is. Some hire or company contracts want the owner to approve the work, and that's easier settled before our engineers get there than after.

Phone 0333 366 0103 once you've got that together — or, if the car is at home, going nowhere, use .

## Caulcott fuel drain on its way? Whilst you wait

Help, however well meant, is what does the damage whilst you wait. So hold to these.

- Safety before your car. If it has stopped somewhere unsafe, get yourself away from the traffic and wait away from it. If it's safe where it sits, wait with it.

- Nobody starts it. Not a passer-by being kind, not to check it is all right, not to roll the car a couple of yards.

- Additives stay in your boot. Injector cleaner and two-stroke oil draw none of the petrol out again.

- No home-made draining. Siphoning petrol into a can at the kerbside is hazardous, and it leaves the fuel that has already gone beyond that tank.

- Even your radio or your windows aren't worth turning your ignition on for.

## When our van arrives: your fuel drain, step by step

- Three questions. What got in, how much, and if it has run. The answers set the job, which is why our quote comes after them and not before.

- Then your tank is emptied, and the contaminated fuel is taken out.

- The lines are purged. If it ran, that petrol has moved beyond your tank, and the fuel lines are holding it.

- The fuel filter is sorted. Cleared, or swapped where the vehicle has a workable one.

- Bleeding the system comes once clean diesel is in.

- The start-up. With fresh diesel in and the system bled, it's started and tested to make sure it runs correctly.

Until it runs on new diesel, we stay with it.

When it has been spotted soon, long-term damage is very uncommon, and the car goes back to normal use at once.

## Back on the road around Caulcott after the fuel drain

- Once it has been started on fresh fuel, there is nothing unusual to do: drive normally.

- Pull over and ring us back if anything seems wrong early on — a light on the dash, smoke from the exhaust, an idle that is lumpy, or a throttle with a dead spot.

- Hold on to your paperwork. A hire company, a fleet manager or an insurer may ask what was carried out.

- Next time, trust the petrol pump's label rather than the colour of its handle.
