# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Cefn-y-bedd

Don't turn on the motor. If the petrol is still inside your tank and your engine has not been started, a fuel drain is nearly always all it requires — and that is settled in the next few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they sit, across Cefn-y-bedd and the remainder of Flintshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive.

Contact us before anything else begins, and you'll know what happens after that.

## The next five steps: petrol in a diesel

- Never crank it — and do not rely on it when it runs. That is the bit people have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor fed diesel generally just can't run, so the motorist stops and the wear stops with them. A diesel fed petrol usually starts, ticks over and drives away quite happily for a couple of miles. It is not all right. It is wearing your fuel system while you drive.

- Turning the ignition on often primes the system, and priming is what draws petrol out of that tank and into the pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol handles the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave your ignition alone.

- Topping up takes out nothing. It hands you a bigger tank of the same mix, since a diesel fuel system does not tolerate petrol by percentage in the way that advice assumes — so don't add diesel on top to weaken it. Octane is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.

- Stay still if it's wise to. Hazards on, motor off, leave the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Llay Road, anywhere — an odd spot for us beats a started motor, and nothing is easier for us to sort than a car that never shifted.

- Our van showing up rather than circling hinges on two things: a postcode beginning LL12 9, and whatever is nearest to you with a sign on it. Keep both prepared before you dial.

- What was put in, approximately how much, and also whether the car has run — the three details determine your whole call-out. Ring 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

The trip back would more or less double it, for no gain at all. One commute has already sent a real amount of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure fuel pump of that Renault Megane. So keep the car where it is. Phone us from the platform if that is simpler — nobody needs you hovering over your car outside the nearest station while we get it done, and tonight trumps finding out on Monday.

## Clearing petrol from the diesel at the forecourt

Most of the work begins at a forecourt, so a large chunk of that ends up completed on site.

If you are still on the forecourt at Gulf, that's usually where the drain gets done — we work on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the owner's consent.

No place but a forecourt can the mistake be caught with your engine still untouched.

Fuel pulled out of the tank and through the fuel filter, right to the high-pressure pump, is what occurs when the motor is switched on and your car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the fuel filter and your lines as well as the tank. That is still not a catastrophe, and our engineers sort it out where your car is. What decides it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after the till receipt was checked.

Attendants will normally help out pushing it out from the pump, which lets the next customer get past. Accept the offer.

Cranking the car just to shift four car lengths is not.

## Can our engineers cover your part of Cefn-y-bedd?

These same trips carry us to Abermorddu, Sydallt, Bridge End, Caergwrle and Cymau along with Cefn-y-bedd, which is a village.

There are pages for nearly all towns around Flintshire, and the ones named above are simply the nearest neighbours — so yours being missing from the list tells you nothing whatsoever about if our technicians come.

Near a boundary, or somewhere the satnav struggles with? Call us and check rather than presuming.

The patch the page includes is on this map.

We work at the roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks over all of it, and the vehicle does not need to move to us.

Your diesel Nissan Qashqai will have seemed entirely normal on the way back from Dodleston CofE Primary School. They all do, and that's the trap with petrol in a diesel instead of the other way round. Put diesel in a petrol vehicle and it generally won't run, and so the person stops and the damage stops with them. Put petrol in a diesel and it starts, idles and drives off as though nothing has happened — all while the high-pressure fuel pump works without the protection your fuel is meant to be providing. Nothing alerts you, since from the driver's seat there's nothing to alert you about. Ring us with approximately how far you drove and how hard you pushed it; the second answer matters more than the first.

## Kerbside call-outs in Cefn-y-bedd

The chance to pull over somewhere sensible does not come to everyone.

If you realised after setting off and ended up by the verge of Wrexham Road, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazards flashing, that's a normal call for us instead of an odd one.

Remain beside the vehicle if it is sensible to sit there, yet clear of it if it isn't.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags that blend further into your fuel system — and oblige it usually will, which is why your motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere safer.

However awkward the location, it's no bother for us to get to it, and that is a lot better for the vehicle than pressing on.

## A few miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

Here is where the local M53 comes into it — under 15 miles from Cefn-y-bedd.

It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it's some smoke, a rough idle and power ebbing away — not a neat stop. Misfuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Take the first junction that's sensible, stop there, and don't start the vehicle to move it.

Long run? Anything near the under 5 miles to the closest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that arrived at by the mixture. Say that on the call, because it changes what goes in the van.

Do not drive it home to buy yourself time. You already have it: nothing gets worse while the car sits, since a diesel Audi A3 parked at Bryn y Gaer is doing none of what it did on the way there. Your pump has stopped turning.

## About Cefn-y-bedd

Cefn-y-bedd is a small village in Flintshire, situated on the banks of a river at an elevation of 84 metres. Cefn-y-bedd lies close to the nearby cities of Wrexham and Chester, and is surrounded by other small villages such as Abermorddu and Sydallt. Cefn-y-bedd has a population of around 524 people, predominantly living in detached houses. Cefn-y-bedd is located approximately 164.6 miles from London, making it a relatively rural community.

## Once our technicians reach you around Cefn-y-bedd: what follows

- Our engineers ask first, price after. What went in? How much? Has your motor run? Those replies change what the work really is.

- Out goes the tainted fuel.

- Lines rinsed, filter cleaned. Whatever is left later on isn't the thing that started the problem.

- We pour clean diesel in and prime the fuel system.

- When it's turned on, our engineers check it runs correctly on clean diesel.

From that point, you're ready to set off.

There is no need for a workshop at any stage, because the work is all done where your car is, and when it is noticed early, permanent damage is very unusual.

Pulled off the forecourt, read the till receipt, and parked your diesel BMW 5 Series up close to Caergwrle Castle a few hundred yards later? That's about as well as this goes once the engine has turned. Phone us then leave it off. The short distance really assists, but it was still a start and a drive, and so diluted fuel has arrived at the fuel filter and your pump — which is why our technicians clean your lines rather than only clearing the tank.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, around Cefn-y-bedd?

If what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the first step is unchanged — don't crank it — yet this issue isn't.

Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and removes the protection the system relies on.

AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it causes rust and deposits instead.

Both are ours. There is a separate Cefn-y-bedd page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Petrol in a diesel does its harm as a share, which is the reason our engineers ask at all: the same few litres waiting in a nearly empty tank make a far stronger mix than they would in a full one. And petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure — the opposite of what a diesel wants — so a stronger mix knocks more, smokes more, goes flatter. None of which means you need an answer ready. Almost nobody knows how full your tank was in a car picked up two days ago, and our engineers work that out on site. Do ring the hire or company firm first, though: some agreements want them to approve the work, and that's far faster settled before than after. Then ring us about the Vauxhall Astra by All Saints Church.

## Cefn-y-bedd pricing for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

What changes the price is laid out below, because the job is not one job and we can't frankly put a single price on this page.

- Whether your engine has been started or driven. This is the main one.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, set against how much that tank takes.

- Which got in: petrol or AdBlue.

- Whether our van can sensibly get to the car and work on it, which depends on where the car is.

Tell us what your car is, how much got in, and whether your motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range.

Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is fine for that.

## Questions we get about petrol in diesel around Cefn-y-bedd

## Fuel drains on a Cefn-y-bedd petrol station forecourt

Much of what our technicians do takes place nowhere else. So yes.

Tell us which one you are at when you ring and we will tell you if our technicians can work there. With the station's agreement our technicians attend Shell and the other forecourts locally all the time.

## A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It hinges on the proportion instead of the litres, and much more on whether the motor has run.

Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mixture been sucked right through, or has it not?

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Pull over somewhere safe, turn off, then leave the car off.

Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the problem out of that tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable a lot more frequently than people fear.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, clearing and flushing is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it.

What is likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for your engine to remain off.

## Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a different fault from a bygone era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind replaces.

After that? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

No. We drain and clean your car wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a dealership.

## Standing next to it?

Shut off is how the car remains.

Turn it off somewhere safe and keep it off, if you have already driven it.

Cold, still, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. People fear this far more than they need to.
