# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Charlton?

With the tank still holding the petrol and the motor not yet started, almost every job takes only a drain, so leave the engine off. That result is determined in the minutes immediately after the fill-up, and not by the amount that got in. Across Charlton and the remainder of Greater London, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and cleans it where it sits, whether at a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt.

Our engineers shall tell you what the next step is. Phone — that happens before everything else.

## The next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

- Don't crank it — and don't trust it when it fires up. That is the thing drivers get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol engine fed diesel usually just cannot run, so the motorist stops and the harm ends with them. A diesel given petrol normally starts, ticks over and moves off quite happily for a couple of miles. It isn't all right. It is wearing out your fuel system as you drive.

- Diesel burns, and before it combusts it greases — your high-pressure pump, those injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave your ignition be too: flicking it on is frequently all it takes to prime that system, and priming pulls petrol from the tank into just those components.

- Don't water down it. Diesel added on top clears nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The octane makes no difference.

- Stay where you are if you reasonably can. A car that has not shifted is the simplest one to sort out, and we'd much rather come to a difficult spot than have it started. If you're pulled up on the verge on Charlton Park Road, put those hazards on then keep the car there.

- Find out where you are before ringing. A postcode starting SE7 8, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the technician circles instead of showing up.

- Three facts determine the whole job: the fuel you poured in, the approximate amount of it, plus whether it has been going since. The line is 0333 366 0103.

Never take it home. The drive in has already pushed a real amount of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure fuel pump of your Renault Clio, and the trip back would about double it for no reason at all. Call us from the platform if that is handier. Our technicians never need you hovering over the vehicle at the nearest station while our technicians get it done, and our team would far rather talk to you tonight than discover on Monday.

## Can petrol be drained out of a diesel at a forecourt?

A fair part of the job gets done at the pump, as that's where it usually kicks off.

If you're still on the forecourt at Esso, that is generally where this drain happens — we operate on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the owner's permission.

No place but a forecourt can this be halted with the motor still cold.

The few seconds between reading your receipt and going for the key determine how much needs cleaning. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was fired up and driven to get there, so fuel was pulled from the tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means your lines and the filter need flushing as well as that tank. It's not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still deal with it where the vehicle is.

The staff will normally offer to push the car clear of the pump so the next driver can get by. That is worth doing.

Moving it four spaces doesn't warrant cranking it.

The awkward part is the bay, not your fuel. Cars either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and now and then a height barrier on the way in that decides if a technician can reach you at all — so when you ring from a car park like the one at Co-op Food, mention how much space there is round you and which way round your car is. Those our engineers visit regularly. Should there be no space to work alongside your diesel Volkswagen Tiguan, it gets moved with your engine off, and not out of pedantry over a couple of seconds of running: priming takes place at every start, more of the mix leaves that tank for the pump, and two shunts into a better bay have quietly made a worse job of what was simply a car standing still.

## Places we serve near Charlton

As a residential suburb, Charlton sees a frequent visit, whilst the villages nearby come along on the same round: New Charlton and Westcombe Park, Shooters Hill and Woolwich, Kidbrooke.

We still come. Those names above are just the nearest neighbours, and a page is there for most places around Greater London, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from the coverage.

Ring us and check rather than presuming, especially when you're on a boundary or somewhere your phone struggles with.

Use the map for the area shown here.

Your vehicle doesn't need to move to us. We operate throughout every bit of it — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Each restart primes the lines and draws more petrol through the filter then into your pump. So a misfuelled diesel BMW 3 Series on the zig-zags by Charlton Manor Primary School is a nuisance, whereas the same motor fired up three more times to be courteous is a fuel system and not a tank. Somebody will tell you to move the car out of that gateway and deal with it later. Do not. Leave it, let people complain, then give us a call.

## Roadside stops around Charlton

Not everybody gets a suitable place to pull in.

Set off, then twigged? Landed by the verge on Fairfield Grove, or parked in some lay-by with the hazard lights on? That's a normal call here. Not a rare one.

Okay where you are? Wait with it. Not safe? Move out and clear of it.

Never restart it to get to a nicer place. It will go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls the mix deeper into the fuel system.

We'll take our van to an awkward spot without any trouble, and for your car that's far better than driving on.

## So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel after a few miles

This is where the M11 matters, under 10 miles from Charlton.

A misfuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, while the symptoms when they come are typically a loss of power, a lumpy idle and smoke instead of a neat stop.

The first safe junction is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone.

It alters what our technicians bring, so say so when you call: on a longer drive — anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through your filter, the pump and the injectors.

## Where's Charlton?

Charlton is a suburban area in southeast London, situated approximately 7.4 miles from central London and 6.1 miles from the city centre. Charlton has a relatively low elevation of 44 metres and is characterised by a high proportion of flat dwellings. Charlton is located near other suburban areas, including New Charlton, Westcombe Park, and Shooters Hill, and is home to around 12,574 residents. Charlton forms part of the larger London urban landscape, with its residents commuting to the city for work and leisure.

## Our visit in Charlton, step by step

- The responses alter the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting: what got in, how much of it, and if your engine has run.

- Your tank is cleared of it.

- Fuel lines are purged through and the filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the system that caused any of this.

- We put clean diesel in and prime the system.

- When it's turned on, our engineers make sure it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

The car is then ready for you to drive away.

Our technicians do all of it wherever your car has come to a stop, which means it never has to be taken to a workshop, and if it has been noticed soon, it is very unusual for there to be permanent damage.

Rarely the issue, the place. On-street is the commonest location we work, and a tight parking space is far preferable to a car that has been driven somewhere more convenient. What does help, when you ring from close to Charlton House, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether our van can stand beside without blocking the road, and if anything has run since you filled up. Then your Dacia Duster gets drained, your filter changed where a workable one exists, the fuel lines rinsed and clean fuel put through the full circuit — as by now the worst of that is in the lines, not that tank.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, around Charlton?

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening step is unchanged — the engine stays off — while this fault beneath it is a distinct one altogether.

Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and removes the protection your fuel system relies on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus build-up.

We deal with both, and AdBlue removal in Charlton has its own page with the full story — including why it's usually the more significant of the two.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Charlton?

Truthfully, no single price belongs on a page like this. The job changes. Here's what moves it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, against how much that tank takes.

- Whether it was petrol or AdBlue.

- Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there is sensible for a van.

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much got in, and whether the motor has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range.

Car at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is ideal for that.

No warning light exists for this, which is why vehicles in that position usually get driven a second time before anyone calls. Please don't be one of them. The throttle went soft and the idle turned lumpy after a couple of streets, and the diesel Vauxhall Astra is now resting by Charlton War Memorial. Deadness there means fuel that can't build pressure fully instead of an engine failing. Switch off. Phone us.

## Questions our technicians hear about petrol in diesel around Charlton

## Fuel drains on a Charlton petrol station forecourt

A big part of this work happens there, so yes.

Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Shell is somewhere we're frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you will hear if working there is possible.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Ratio settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run.

Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is needed is if that mix has been sucked through the fuel system.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that.

It is recoverable a lot more commonly than motorists fear, even though driving is what takes the problem from the tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, emptying and purging is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it.

Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

Two-stroke oil solves a different problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No.

Your tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and the pump still has to put up with it.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

Wherever the car is, our technicians drain and flush it there, so a drive to the main dealer does not come into it.

## You, and your vehicle, still together?

Leave the car switched off.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere sensible, turn off, then let the vehicle stay that way.

Cold and parked, a car is in the best position available — and motorists fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
