# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Chatham

Never start your engine. If the fuel is still in that tank and your engine has not yet turned over, a drain is almost always all it needs — and that is decided in the next few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled cars where they are, all over Chatham and the remainder of Kent, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive.

Call us before anything else starts, so you'll know what follows from there.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to try now

- Whenever you drive, the pump and the injectors suffer. That is why you never crank it, and why you don't believe it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel especially — the bit most people get wrong — is that it pulls away happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor typically cannot run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the damage with them. This one lets you carry on.

- Diesel burns, and before it burns it greases — the injection pump, its injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the car's ignition be too: switching it on is often enough to prime that system, and priming carries petrol from the tank into exactly those components.

- That guidance supposes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It will not. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you end with is a larger tank of the same mix. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.

- We would sooner come to a difficult place than have it started — so if you reasonably can, stay put. Nothing is easier to sort than a vehicle that has never shifted. On the verge on The Brook, that means hazards on then leave the car.

- Find out where you are before calling. A postcode beginning ME4 4, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than showing up.

- Phone 0333 366 0103. Expect three questions — what was put in, approximately how many litres, and whether your car has been turned over. Those replies decide whatever happens next.

## Can petrol be drained from your diesel at a forecourt?

Forecourts are where this work mostly kicks off, and where a fair share of it closes.

Still at Esso? Then that is usually where it gets done. Station forecourts are normal for us, with the agreement of the site.

At a forecourt, the mistake is spotted with your motor never started, and nowhere else manages it.

Everywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was fired up and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from that tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure pump. That's not a catastrophe, and we can still deal with it where it stands. It does mean the lines and the filter need cleaning as well as the tank, and that is decided by the few seconds between checking your receipt and going for the key.

Away from the pump, the next driver can get by — so yes, let the staff help you push the car. Very much worth it.

Starting the car over four vehicle lengths? Not a chance.

We're in car parks like the one at Sainsbury's often, and it's rarely your fuel that complicates them. It's the bay. Cars both sides. Trolleys stacked up behind. Sometimes a height barrier at the way in, which settles if a van reaches you at all. So mention how penned in you are when you phone, and which way the car is facing. If there is no space to work alongside the Renault Megane, our engineers shift it without the motor. That isn't fussiness over a couple of seconds: starts prime things, mixture comes out of your tank on to your pump, and a car shifted twice for a better spot is quietly a harder job than one nobody touched.

## Service near Chatham

Chatham is a coastal town, and so our technicians head out to it and to anywhere near it on those same trips: Brompton, Troy Town, Rochester, Luton and Strood.

Not on this list? It says nothing. The names above are only the closest few, and most locations across Kent have a page of their own elsewhere on our site.

Phone to check rather than presuming — boundaries above all, and wherever your satnav tends to struggle with.

The map marks the ground the page covers.

Our technicians work by the road, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks over all of it, and your car does not need to move to us.

Somebody will advise you to move the car out of the gateway and fix it later. Do not. A misfilled diesel Skoda Octavia on the zig-zags outside Brompton-Westbrook Primary School is an inconvenience; the same car started three more times to be polite is a fuel system rather than a tank. Every restart primes the lines and pulls more petrol through the filter and into your pump. Leave it, let everyone grumble, and phone us.

## Chatham: stuck where you pulled up

Some drivers have no safe place to pull in at all.

Set off, then noticed? Landed on the verge on Whiffen's Avenue, or stuck in some lay-by with your hazards flashing? That's a routine call here. Not an odd one.

Whether you sit by the motor or keep away from it rests on whether staying in it is safe.

Do not fire it up to get to a better place. It will go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags that mix deeper into the system.

However difficult the spot, it is no trouble for us to get to it, and that's a lot better for your car than pressing on.

The components that should be getting lubricated are grinding instead, and your vehicle gives no sign of that: a diesel on a thinned tank fires up and moves off quite happily. Try the trip home from The Prince of Wales? No. Ring us and leave the BMW 3 Series where it sits.

## A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

Here is where your M2 comes in, under 3 miles away from Chatham.

It will frequently get you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it is some smoke, a rough idle and power falling away — not a neat stop. Misfuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Don't start it to reposition. Pull off at the next safe junction then turn off.

Long run? Anything approaching the under 15 miles to the closest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that arrived at by the contamination. Say that on the phone, because it affects what goes in the van.

Never drive it home to buy yourself time. You already have it: nothing gets worse while the car waits, since a diesel Nissan Qashqai parked at The Paddock is doing none of what it did on the way there. The pump has stopped turning.

## A bit about Chatham

Chatham is a coastal town situated in Kent, England, and is part of a larger urban area that includes several neighbouring towns. Chatham is located within the Medway unitary authority and is closely tied to the surrounding communities. The town's coastal setting and proximity to other urban centres make it a notable part of the region. Chatham is a significant component of the local conurbation, which also includes Gillingham, Rochester, and other nearby towns.

## What our technicians do when we reach you around Chatham

- Our engineers establish what was put in, how much, and if your motor has run. The replies alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before giving a price.

- Out comes the polluted fuel.

- Fuel lines are flushed through and the filter cleared, leaving nothing in the system that caused any of this.

- We put fresh diesel in and prime the system.

- The engine is started and checked to make sure it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to pull away.

Our engineers do all of it wherever the car has stopped, which means it never has to go to a garage, and when it has been spotted soon, it is very rare for there to be long-term damage.

## Chatham AdBlue removal is a distinct matter

If what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening instruction is unchanged — don't fire it up — yet the issue isn't.

Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and takes away the protection the fuel system depends on.

AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it brings rust and build-up instead.

Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the details sits on its own Chatham page. Both are ours to deal with.

Hire car? Company car? Phone them before us. Some contracts want the firm to approve the work, and that is much quicker dealt with up front than afterwards. Then give us a call about the Peugeot 3008, the diesel one, by The Paddock. Do not worry that you can't say how full your tank was — almost no one can two days into a car, and it's something our engineers work out on site. The reason for asking: harm from petrol in a diesel is a matter of ratio. A couple of litres in an almost empty tank make a far stronger blend than in a full one, and petrol is built to resist the very thing a diesel needs of that, which is igniting when compressed. Stronger mix, more knocking, more smoke, flatter throttle.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in Chatham?

What moves the figure is set out below, because this job isn't one job and our engineers cannot honestly put a single number on this page.

- Whether the engine has been run or driven. This is the main one.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.

- Whether it is petrol or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can a van get to it and work there sensibly?

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much got in, and whether your motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range.

For your car at home that's going nowhere and is not time-critical, is fine too.

## Petrol in diesel: common queries in Chatham

## At a petrol station around Chatham, can you do a fuel drain there?

A large share of this work gets done there, so yes.

Regularly, provided the site consents: Shell, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that spot is something we answer there and then.

## Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

Whether your engine has run matters much more, though the proportion counts too, instead of the litres.

Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that blend been drawn right through, or has it not?

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. Now what?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that.

Driving takes the trouble along — out of your tank, into your pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely helpful thing left to you isn't restarting it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out correctly, clearing and rinsing is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it.

A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

## Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

What petrol has weakened is not restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a distinct problem. So no.

Later? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

Wherever your car is, our engineers drain and flush it there, so a drive to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

## Is the vehicle still with you?

Your engine remains off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting it later.

A still, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from much more often than people expect.

Call-out fuel draining around Chatham and throughout Kent — at the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home.
