# Chertsey: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

With your tank still holding the fuel and your engine not yet run, nearly every job requires only a drain, so leave your engine off. That outcome is settled in the minutes immediately after filling up, rather than by the amount that got in. Across Chertsey and the rest of Surrey, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and flushes it where it is, whether at a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt.

One call our way will be sufficient: we will tell you what follows after this. Make that first.

## What to do first about petrol in a diesel

- Don't start it — and never trust it when it fires up. That is the part drivers get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol engine given diesel typically just can't run, so the driver stops and the wear halts with them. A diesel given petrol generally starts, ticks over and drives off quite happily for a few miles. It's not all right. It's wearing out your fuel system as you drive.

- Leave the car's ignition off also. Diesel does two roles: it burns, and before it burns it greases the high-pressure pump and those injectors. Petrol manages the first but not the second. Turning your ignition on is often all it takes to prime the system, which moves this petrol out of your tank and into exactly those parts.

- That advice assumes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It does not. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you have is a fuller tank of the same mixture. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.

- We would sooner drive to an odd spot than have it started — so if you safely can, stay still. Nothing is easier to handle than a vehicle that has never moved. On the verge on London Street, that means hazards on and leave the car.

- Before you call, have your whereabouts. Anything closest to you with a name on it, plus a postcode that starts KT16 8 — that's what determines whether the van arrives or circles.

- What went in, approximately how much, and if the motor has run — those three answers decide your whole job. Call 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

The drive in is what sucked thinned diesel through the pump. Standing still has pulled nothing. Petrol in a diesel Audi A4, sitting at the nearest station all day, rests idle in that tank whilst it waits. Phone first — before your keys come out.

## Draining petrol from the diesel on the forecourt

A big share of this job gets completed at a forecourt, as that's where it mostly kicks off.

We operate on station forecourts routinely, with the site's permission, so if you're still at Sainsbury's that's normally where the drain happens.

At a garage, it gets spotted with your motor never fired, and no place else does it.

Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and driven to get there, which means fuel was pulled from the tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a disaster, and we can still deal with it where it is. It does mean the lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as your tank, and that is decided by the few seconds between reading the till receipt and reaching for your key.

The attendants will generally help you roll the car away from the pump so the next motorist can get through. That's worth doing.

Moving it four spaces doesn't warrant starting it.

Diesel Peugeot 3008. A few litres of unleaded. Done a couple of miles. Turned off now, outside Sainsbury's. That's the call we want, since the question underneath it is about amount through your pump instead of hours on the clock.

## Chertsey and the villages next to it

Those same trips carry us to Abbey Mead, Addlestonemoor, St Anns Hill, Penton Hook and Laleham besides Chertsey, which is a riverside town.

Not on the list? That means nothing. The names above are only the closest few, and most places in Surrey have a page of their own somewhere on our site.

Contact us to check instead of guessing, especially when you're on the boundary or somewhere your satnav misreads.

The map outlines the area the page covers.

All of it is ground our engineers work: a kerbside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You don't bring your car anywhere.

Move it out of the gateway and deal with it later — that's what a passer-by will say, and it's wrong. Stopped on the zig-zags outside St Anne's Catholic Primary School, a wrongly fuelled diesel Mercedes E-Class is a hassle and nothing worse. Fired up three more times for courtesy, it is no longer a tank issue but a fuel system one, because priming takes place with every start and more petrol goes past the filter on to the pump. Let everyone moan. Phone us.

## Broken down at the roadside in Chertsey

Not everybody gets a suitable place to stop.

A normal call for us instead of an unusual one: noticed after setting off, ended up on the verge of Windsor Street or in a lay-by with your hazards on.

Clear of the car while it is not safe to sit there, with it when it is.

Never restart it to get to a better place. It'll go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws the blend deeper into the fuel system.

Our van coming to an awkward spot is no trouble for us, and it is much better for your car than driving on.

## Run it already? Pull over, and check this

The M3 is the one which counts now, and it runs under a mile from Chertsey.

A loss of power, a rough idle, smoke: those are the signs when they appear, rather than a clean stop — and a misfuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

Take the next exit that is sensible, stop there, and never restart the car to move it.

Presume the worst of it on a long run. Anything near the under 25 miles to the nearest city, and the mixture has been through your filter, through the pump, through the fuel injectors. Say so when you call. What we bring changes.

Out there happy, back sluggish. If that was the drive to Abbeyfields, look at the tank. Diesel gets thinned by petrol, and thin fuel slips past the close tolerances supposed to build injection pressure — so every additional mile the diesel BMW X1 covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere sensible, turn off, call us.

## Where's Chertsey?

Chertsey is a town situated on the River Thames in Surrey, with a low elevation of around 17 metres above sea level. Chertsey lies approximately 18 miles south-west of central London, near the M25 motorway. Chertsey has a mix of housing types, but semi-detached homes are particularly prevalent. Chertsey is close to several nearby places, including Abbey Mead and St Anns Hill.

## What our engineers do when we get to you in Chertsey

- Our technicians ask first, price after. What went in? How much? Has your motor run? Those answers shape what the work actually is.

- The polluted fuel comes from that tank.

- What is remaining in the system should not be what created the problem, so the fuel lines get purged and the fuel filter cleaned.

- Bleeding your system follows, once new diesel is in.

- Once it's turned on, our technicians check it runs properly on clean diesel.

That leaves it ready to pull away.

Permanent damage is very uncommon when it has been spotted early, and because all of this is done where the vehicle is, it never has to be taken to a workshop.

Draining your Citroen C3, changing the fuel filter where there is a serviceable one, cleaning your lines, putting clean fuel through the whole system: that is this job, and it's shaped by the worst of it resting in the lines instead of in that tank by this point. Three things help when you ring from close to St. Peter's Church — which side the filler is on, whether a technician can pull up alongside without blocking the road, and if your engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the commonest place our engineers work, and so the location itself is rarely the issue. A narrow parking bay trumps a car driven somewhere more convenient.

## Chertsey AdBlue removal is a separate job

The fault isn't the same, though the opening step is — never crank it — if what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol.

Petrol weakens the diesel and strips the protection the system depends on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus build-up.

Both are ours. There is a separate Chertsey page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

## Chertsey pricing for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

What changes the figure is listed below, since the job isn't one job and our engineers can't frankly put a single number on this page.

- Whether the engine has been started or driven. This is the main one.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.

- Whether it's unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where your car is, and whether our van can sensibly get to and work on it.

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much got in, and if your motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range.

Not urgent, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Chertsey drivers

## At a petrol station around Chertsey, can you do a fuel drain there?

A big part of this work gets done there, so yes.

We work at BP and the other forecourts around town routinely, with the owner's permission — tell us which one you're at when you ring and we will tell you if our technicians can work there.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Ratio is, and far more than either, it matters whether anything has been run.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate situations, certainly. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether the fuel system has had that blend drawn through it.

## Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? Now what?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then turn off and leave it off.

It is recoverable far more often than drivers assume, even though driving is what shifts the problem from that tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out correctly isn't a change and does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one, which is another good reason to leave it turned off.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a separate problem and it doesn't restore what petrol has thinned.

That tank still has petrol in it later, and the pump still has to live with it.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

Wherever the car is, we drain and clean it there, so a visit to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

## Is your car still with you?

Switched off is how the car remains.

Switch it off somewhere sensible then leave it off, if you have already driven it.

Cold and stationary, a vehicle is in the best position available — and drivers fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.

Clearing misfilled vehicles, Chertsey and the rest of Surrey, wherever they are. Roadside. Forecourt. Home.
