# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Church End? Don't Start It

With the tank still holding the petrol and the motor not yet run, nearly every job requires only a drain, so leave the engine off. That result is settled in the minutes immediately after the fill-up, and not by the amount that got in. All over Church End and the rest of Greater London, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and flushes it where it sits, whether by a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt.

Contact us so we can tell you what follows after that before you attempt anything else.

## What to try now about petrol in a diesel

- Do not crank it — and don't believe it when it does start. Here is the part most people get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol motor given diesel generally just will not run, so the driver stops and the damage stops with them. A diesel filled with petrol usually starts, ticks over and pulls away perfectly well for several miles. It's not all right. It's wearing out the fuel system as you drive.

- Two jobs, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure fuel pump and injectors protected. Petrol only manages the one. That is why the car's ignition stays off as well — flick it on and you commonly prime your system, and that is petrol exiting that tank for precisely those components.

- That guidance presumes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It does not. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you end with is a bigger tank of the same mix. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.

- Stay put if it is safe to. Hazards on, motor off, keep the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Albert Place, anywhere — a tricky location for us beats a started engine, and nothing is easier for us to sort than a vehicle that never moved.

- Check where you are before phoning. A postcode starting N3 1, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than turning up.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Expect three things — what got in, approximately how many litres, plus if your car has been run. The replies decide all that comes after.

## At a forecourt: clearing petrol from the diesel

A large part of this work ends up completed at the pump, since that's where it mostly begins.

If you are still on the forecourt at BP, that is generally where this drain gets done — we work on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the site's permission.

Nowhere else other than a garage can it be caught with your motor still untouched.

Fuel drawn out of your tank and through the fuel filter, right to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what happens when your engine is fired up and the vehicle is driven to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in the filter and your lines as well as the tank. That is still not a calamity, and our engineers put it right where the vehicle sits. What determines it is whether the ignition was turned in the seconds after your receipt was checked.

Attendants will normally chip in pushing it out from the pump, which lets the next motorist get past. Accept the help.

Starting the car just to roll four vehicle lengths is not.

The tricky part is that bay, not your fuel. Vehicles either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and from time to time a height limit on the way in that settles whether our van can get to you at all — so when you call from a car park like the one outside Tesco Superstore Finchley, say how much clearance there's about you and which way round the car is. Those we cover regularly. Should there be no room to work alongside your diesel Audi A4, it gets rolled with the motor off, and not out of fussiness over a couple of seconds of running: priming occurs at every start, more of that mixture leaves your tank for your pump, and two shunts into a nicer spot have silently made a harder job of what was merely a motor standing still.

## Places we reach in Church End

Being a residential suburb, Church End sees a frequent call, whilst its neighbours nearby come along on the same trip: Finchley and North Finchley, Holders Hill and Woodside Park, Temple Fortune.

There are dedicated pages for nearly all towns around Greater London, and the ones listed above are merely the closest neighbours — so yours being absent from that list tells you nothing whatsoever about if our technicians come.

Guessing is the mistake to avoid, particularly on the border or anywhere the satnav goes wrong. Ring us and check.

See this map for the patch covered here.

Our technicians work at the roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks across all of it, and the vehicle doesn't need to move to us.

Shift the vehicle out of the gateway and deal with it later — that is what somebody will say, and it's wrong. Sitting on the zig-zags at Pardes House Primary School, a misfuelled diesel Dacia Duster is a nuisance and nothing worse. Fired up three more times for good manners, it is no longer a tank fault but a fuel system one, because priming takes place with every start and more petrol goes through your filter toward your pump. Let everyone grumble. Call us.

## Roadside stops across Church End

The chance to pull in anywhere suitable doesn't fall to everybody.

Set off, then realised? Finished up along the verge beside Regent's Park Road, or stuck in some lay-by with your hazards flashing? That's a common call here. Not an unusual one.

Sit by the motor while it is safe to wait there, but out of it when it isn't.

Do not fire up the engine to nurse the vehicle somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging that blend further into the system.

A technician coming to a tricky spot is no bother for us, and it's a lot better for your car than pressing on.

## A few miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

Here is where the M1 comes in, under 3 miles from Church End.

Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a clean stop. Power falls away, your idle turns lumpy, and there may be some smoke.

Take the next exit that is safe, pull up there, and don't restart the car to move it.

It changes what our technicians bring, so say so when you ring: on a longer trip — anything approaching the under 10 miles to the closest city — take it the mixture has been through the fuel filter, the pump and your injectors.

Here is the full mechanism. Diesel needs enough body to seal the tight clearances it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That is it. Which explains the usual Church End Gardens call — a diesel BMW 1 Series, out there without complaint and back down on power, uneven at idle, possibly a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, and so the fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; thinned, it bleeds past those tolerances instead of building, and delivery comes weaker, later, less even than the engine was built round. Not a failing engine, though. Fuel that has stopped acting like diesel. Put that right and it stops.

## A bit about Church End

Church End is a suburban area in north London, situated near the riverside and close to Finchley and North Finchley. Church End has a relatively high elevation of 87 metres and is home to a large population of around 12406 people. Church End is predominantly composed of flat housing, reflecting its urban character. Church End is located approximately 7 miles from central London, making it a popular residential area.

## What happens when our engineers reach you in Church End

- The responses shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before giving a price: what was put in, how much of that, and whether the motor has run.

- The contaminated fuel comes out of that tank.

- What is remaining in the system should not be what caused the issue, so the lines get purged and your filter cleared.

- Fresh diesel goes in, and then your system gets bled.

- We start the car and check it runs correctly on new diesel.

That leaves it ready to set off.

Permanent damage is very rare when it has been spotted early, and because everything is done where the car is, it never needs to go to a workshop.

Your pump waits ahead of the fuel injectors, so whatever a worn-out one gives off moves downstream with your fuel — which is why we're direct about not driving on. Call us, and leave the diesel Ford Kuga where it's by St Mary's Court.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, around Church End?

The problem is not the same, though the first step is — never start it — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

Diluted diesel, and no protection left for your fuel system that depends on it. That is petrol.

AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it brings rust and residue in its place.

Both are ours. There's a separate Church End page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

## Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Church End

What moves the figure is listed below, as the job is not one job and our engineers cannot honestly put a single number on this page.

- This is the key one: whether your engine has been started, or driven.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, compared with how much that tank can hold.

- The type of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where the car is, and whether a technician can safely reach and work on it.

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear rather than as a range.

Not time-critical, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

By this point the tank isn't where most of the trouble is. Once a diesel has run, that blend is in your filter, the fuel lines, your pump and the rail — and it does not come back out with your tank contents. A diesel Vauxhall Insignia that made it close to St Margaret's United Reform Church needs your system flushed, not drained.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Church End drivers

## Fuel drains on a Church End petrol station forecourt

Much of what our technicians do takes place nowhere else. So yes.

Regularly, provided the site consents: Esso, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that place is something our engineers answer there and then.

## Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Proportion decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct situations, of course. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether your fuel system has had that mix pulled through it.

## I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then turn off and keep it off.

It's salvageable much more commonly than drivers expect, even though driving is what moves the trouble from that tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart it.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain then flush done to a correct standard, which is no change at all.

An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

What petrol has weakened isn't restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a distinct issue. So no.

The tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and the pump still has to cope with it.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

You don't need one. Your car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

## Still with your car?

Switched off is how it stays.

If you have already driven the car, pull over somewhere sensible, turn it off and keep it off.

A stationary, cold vehicle is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from much more regularly than motorists fear.

At the roadside, on the forecourt or at home — call-out fuel draining in Church End and across Greater London.
