# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Churt

With the tank still carrying the fuel and your engine not yet started, almost every job needs only a drain, so leave your engine off. That outcome is settled in the minutes right after filling up, and not by the amount that was put in. Across Churt and the rest of Surrey, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and cleans it where it is, whether by a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt.

Ring us and then we can show you what follows from here before you attempt anything else.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to try next

- Whenever you drive, the pump and the fuel injectors wear down. That's why you never fire it up, and why you don't rely on it once it has started. The trick about petrol in a diesel especially — the bit drivers get wrong — is that it pulls away happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor usually won't run at all, which stops the driver and stops the harm with them. This one lets you keep going.

- Leave your ignition be also. Diesel performs two roles: it ignites, and before it ignites it lubricates the high-pressure pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first but not the second. Flicking your ignition on is usually sufficient to prime your system, which draws that petrol out of that tank then into just those components.

- Do not water down it. Diesel tipped on top gets rid of nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The grade makes no difference.

- A motor that has never moved is the quickest one to sort out, so remain where you are if you sensibly can. Stopped on the verge on Hale House Lane? Hazards on, then keep the vehicle there. An awkward spot suits us better than a started motor.

- Our van arriving rather than circling depends on two things: a postcode that starts GU10 2, and whatever is next to you with a label on it. Have both ready before you ring.

- What went in, about how much, plus if the car has run — the three replies determine the entire call-out. Ring 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

## Can petrol be drained out of your diesel on the forecourt?

Pumps are where this work often begins, and where a good portion of it finishes.

If you're still on the forecourt at JET, that is typically where this drain takes place — our technicians work on station forecourts routinely, with the owner's agreement.

Nowhere else except a forecourt can it be stopped with the engine still unrun.

Fuel drawn out of the tank and through the fuel filter, all the way to the high-pressure pump, is what occurs when your engine is fired up and your car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in your filter and your lines along with that tank. That is still not a disaster, and our technicians put it right where the vehicle stands. What settles it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after your receipt was checked.

The attendants will usually happily push it clear of the petrol pump so the next motorist can get by. It is worth doing.

Rolling the car four spaces doesn't warrant firing it.

## Can we reach your corner of Churt?

Churt is a village, and our team get out to the town and to the areas around it on the usual runs: Barford, Green Cross, Whitmoor Vale, Crosswater and Hearn.

There are pages for the majority of locations across Surrey, and the ones mentioned above are merely the immediate neighbours — so yours being missing from the list means nothing whatsoever about if we come.

Call us to enquire rather than presuming — boundaries above all, and anywhere a satnav might misread.

Look at this map for the area shown on this page.

Your car does not need to come to us. Our technicians work across all of it — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Every restart primes your lines and drags more petrol past your filter then into the pump. So a misfilled diesel BMW 3 Series on the zig-zags outside St John's CofE Aided Infant School is a hassle, whereas the same motor restarted three more times to be courteous is a fuel system and not a tank. A passer-by will tell you to move the vehicle out of the gateway and fix it later. Do not. Leave it there, let them grumble, then ring us.

## Churt: stuck where you pulled up

Not everyone gets the chance to pull over somewhere suitable.

Hazards on at a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge of Barford Lane because you realised after setting off — our technicians take that call often enough that it's the usual kind.

Stay by the motor while it's safe to be inside, yet clear of it if it isn't.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls that mix further into your fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why the motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere handier.

However tricky the place, it is no trouble for us to get to it, and that is far better for the vehicle than pressing on.

Try the trip home from The Crossways? No. It will fire up and it will pull away just fine, which is the trouble — a diesel on a thinned tank acts usually whilst wearing the components your fuel should be lubricating. Park the Mercedes C-Class and call us.

## Driven it already? Pull over, then read below

The M3 is the road that counts now, and it runs under 15 miles from Churt.

It will frequently take you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is smoke, a rough idle and power draining away — not a tidy stop. Misfilled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Never restart it to reposition. Get off at the first safe exit and switch off.

On a longer drive — anything approaching the under 25 miles to the closest city — assume the mixture has been through your filter, your pump and the injectors, and say so when you ring. It affects what our technicians bring.

Normal on the way out, gutless on the way back. If that's how that drive to Churt Recreation Ground went, your tank is where to look. Petrol dilutes diesel, and runnier fuel slips past the close-fitting components that are supposed to build injection pressure — so the further the Vauxhall Astra drove, the less well it held that pressure. Pull in somewhere safe, switch off then ring us.

## All about Churt

Churt is a village in Surrey, situated on the banks of the River Wey, with an elevation of around 99 metres. Churt lies in a rural area, surrounded by nearby places such as Barford, Green Cross, and Whitmoor Vale. Churt has a population of approximately 695 residents, who mostly live in detached houses. Churt is located about 38 miles from London and 20.8 miles from the nearest city, Chichester.

## Our call-out in Churt, step by step

- Our technicians ask first, price after. What went in? How much? Has the engine run? Those answers shape what the work really is.

- The polluted fuel is drawn out of your tank.

- Our technicians flush the lines and clean your filter, so what is remaining in your system is not what caused the problem.

- Fresh diesel goes in, and then the system gets bled.

- Our technicians start it and make sure it runs correctly on clean diesel.

That leaves it ready to pull away.

All of this is done where the car is, so it never has to go to a workshop, and when it has been noticed early, permanent damage is very unusual.

Our engineers rinse the lines rather than only clearing your tank, and the reason is that weakened fuel has already reached your filter and the pump: it was a start and a drive, however short. The distance really helps — pulled off the forecourt, receipt read, a diesel Peugeot 208 parked up close to Churt Village Hall a couple of hundred yards later is about as well as this goes once the engine has turned. Phone us and leave it off.

## A distinct problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Churt

Never crank it: that first rule holds whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the fault itself.

Diluted diesel, and no protection left for the system that depends on it. That's petrol.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus deposits.

Usually the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the full story sits on its own Churt page. Both are ours to deal with.

Petrol in a diesel does its harm as a ratio, which is the reason our technicians ask at all: the same few litres waiting in a nearly empty tank make a far stronger blend than they would in a full one. And petrol is rated on how well it resists igniting under pressure — the opposite of what a diesel wants — so a stronger blend rattles more, smokes more, goes flatter. None of which means you need an answer prepared. Nearly nobody knows how full that tank was in a motor picked up two days ago, and our engineers work that out there. Do phone the hire or company firm first, though: some agreements want them to authorise the work, and that is far faster settled before than after. Then phone us about the Citroen C3 close to St John the Evangelist.

## Churt costs for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

What shifts the price is set out below, because this job isn't one job and our engineers can't honestly put a single figure on this page.

- Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.

- Wrong fuel in, against what the tank holds — that ratio.

- AdBlue or petrol, whichever went in.

- Where is it? And can our van reach it and work there safely?

Tell us the vehicle, the amount and if it has run, and you'll get a straight answer instead of a range.

Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is ideal for that.

## Questions we hear about petrol in diesel in Churt

## Fuel drains on a Churt petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a big portion of this gets done.

Routinely, provided the site agrees: Royal Parade Stores, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that place is something our technicians answer straight away.

## A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It rests on the ratio instead of the litres, and a lot more on whether your engine has run.

What settles how much work is required is whether that mixture has been pulled through the system — because though five litres in an almost empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one, either way that's the query.

## I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Pull over somewhere safe, switch off, then leave the vehicle off.

Driving shifts the issue along — out of that tank, into the pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly useful thing left to you is not restarting the car.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out properly isn't a change and doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty.

A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a different issue and it doesn't replace what petrol has weakened.

Your pump still has to live with it, because that tank still has petrol in it later.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

You do not need one. The car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a dealership.

## You, and the vehicle, still together?

Leave the engine turned off.

Switch it off somewhere safe then leave it off, if you have already driven it.

A parked, cold motor is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from far more regularly than motorists expect.

Emptying misfuelled vehicles, Churt and the rest of Surrey, wherever they are. Kerbside. Forecourt. Home.
