# Clase: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens

Not for a moment, and not for moving it: your engine remains off. Stop there.

Petrol in a diesel that has not been run is usually a drain and a flush, done right where the vehicle sits, and what you do in the next few minutes determines that far more than anything else.

Here's the order of things from here, wherever you are in Clase.

## Engine off: minute one with petrol in a diesel

Work through these before anything else, in this order.

- The keys out of the ignition. Turning the ignition on can be all it takes to prime the system, and priming pulls petrol out of the tank towards the parts it harms. Leave the vehicle off completely.

- Topping up with diesel seems like it dilutes the problem. It doesn't: nothing gets out, and your tank simply carries more of the same.

- Make the car simple to see first — hazard lights on — if there is traffic going past anywhere near you.

- By hand, not under the motor: that's how it comes off the petrol pump. Ask the forecourt staff to help you roll, however short the distance.

- Hold on to the receipt: the fuel and roughly how much are written on it, and they're what our technicians ask for first.

If you were still driving when you realised, stop somewhere safe instead of pushing on for the services — on the M4, under a mile from Clase, that means the next junction. Step one follows.

## The fork in each Clase fuel drain: has it run yet?

What happens next turns on one answer, and only one.

Not run, not even briefly:

- The petrol is still inside that tank and nowhere else.

- Where the car sits is usually where this work is done: a drain, then a flush.

- No position is better, and it's why the first stage counts so much.

If it's been started, even for a moment:

- Out of the tank, through your filter, into the lines: that's how far that petrol has travelled.

- Your high-pressure pump as well as the injectors get it on a bigger run.

- Mileage is what turns it into a bigger job: the lines flushed, a filter seen to, and at times more than that.

Diesel keeps the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors protected as it runs through them. Petrol gives them nothing, and that's why the line is drawn there.

In the tank, sitting still, petrol does no harm.

Move that petrol, though, and it wears the very parts that move it.

## What to have prepared when you call about petrol in a diesel from Clase

Whether the van goes round or finds you depends on a little preparation.

- SA6 7 and the rest of the postcode is the ideal way to begin telling us where you are.

- A road name is a help: Hill View Crescent, say, or whatever street you've stopped in. A car park does the trick too.

- Name a car park by what it serves — the one at Spar, for instance — and it's much easier to find.

- The vehicle. Make, model, and that it is a diesel.

- Tell us which got in — petrol or AdBlue — since AdBlue is a different job, with a page of its own for Clase.

- Roughly how much — in litres from your receipt, or by how long the nozzle stayed in.

- If it's run, how far plus how hard — as well as whether it's run at all.

- Settle who owns your car ahead of when our technicians get there: some hire and company agreements want the owner to authorise the work, and that is faster beforehand.

Then phone 0333 366 0103. If it can wait — the car is at home and going nowhere — does the trick as well.

## Clase fuel drain on its way? While you wait

Hold to these: kindly meant help does the harm during the wait.

- Safety before the car. If it has stopped somewhere unsafe, get yourself clear of the traffic and wait away from it. If it's safe where it sits, stay with it.

- Nobody — however kind — starts it, whether to see if it runs or to move the car a short way.

- Additives remain in your boot. Injector cleaner and two-stroke oil take none of the petrol out again.

- Emptying it yourself is not the answer: a can of siphoned petrol on a verge is a danger, and the fuel beyond that tank stays where it is anyway.

- Even the radio or the windows aren't worth turning your ignition on for.

## Van arrived? The fuel drain, one stage at a time

- Three questions. What got in, how much, and if it's run. The replies decide the job, which is why the price comes after them and not before.

- Clearing it is how that mixture gets taken out of your tank.

- The fuel lines are purged. If it ran, the petrol has shifted beyond the tank, and the fuel lines are carrying it.

- Where the car has a serviceable filter, it's replaced; otherwise, cleared.

- Fresh diesel in, and the fuel system primed.

- The start-up. With new diesel in and the fuel system bled, it is started and checked to be sure it runs properly.

The vehicle has clean diesel running through it before our engineers head off.

The car goes back to normal use right away, and long-term damage is very rare when it has been noticed quickly.

## Once the fuel drain is done: driving around Clase a second time

- Started on new diesel, it asks nothing special of you. Simply drive normally.

- The first miles are the test. A dash warning, exhaust smoke, a rough idle or a hesitant throttle is your cue to stop and ring us again.

- Keep the paperwork. A hire firm, a fleet manager or an insurer may ask what was carried out.

- Next time, go by the pump's label rather than the colour of its handle.

## About Clase, briefly

## Fuel drains across Clase and nearby

Mynydd-Garn-Lwyd, Mynydd-bach and Tirdeunaw are covered by the same teams that answer petrol in diesel calls around Clase — and so is most of Swansea beyond.

Ring and ask instead of assuming if you're somewhere hard to explain or close to a boundary.

## Ring, and leave it off — petrol in a diesel in Swansea

Petrol in Diesel carries on from there — on your drive, by the kerbside, at the forecourt — once you've done step one: keys out, engine off, receipt in your pocket.
