# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Cleddans?

Do not turn on the engine. If the fuel is still in the tank and your engine has not yet run, a tank drain is nearly always all it requires — and that is decided in the coming few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they sit, all over Cleddans and the remainder of East Dunbartonshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive.

Phone before anything else starts, so you'll hear what comes next.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to do now

- Do not crank it. Started regardless? Then do not depend on it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle typically will not run, and so the driver stops and the wear halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It drives off happily, for several miles. Motorists get that reversed. It is not okay — the fuel system is wearing every mile you cover.

- Diesel ignites, and before it ignites it protects — that high-pressure fuel pump, the injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the ignition alone as well: flicking it on is often enough to prime your system, and priming moves petrol from the tank into just those parts.

- Do not put diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system won't handle petrol by percentage the way that guidance assumes, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it simply leaves you a larger tank of the same mix. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.

- A motor that has never shifted is the easiest one to sort, and so stay where you are if you safely can. Parked on the verge on Whitehill Avenue? Hazards on, then leave the car there. A difficult spot suits us better than a started motor.

- A van arriving instead of circling turns on two things: a postcode beginning G66 2, and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it. Have both ready before you dial.

- Ring 0333 366 0103. Expect three things — what was put in, about how much, and whether the motor has been started. Those answers determine all that happens next.

Quarter past eight. A quick top-up on the way in. At about eleven it dawns on you, and by then the diesel Volkswagen Golf has stood outside Lenzie for three hours. Phone us then keep it where it is. What counts is the drive in, as diesel both ignites and — before that — lubricates your pump and your injectors, whereas petrol only ever burns. Those few miles worked the pump on a fuel stripped of a lot of its protection, and no amount of sitting in a car park puts any of it back. Hence the thing we ask about miles instead of hours sitting, and hence the request to leave your keys alone till our engineers arrive.

## On the forecourt: clearing petrol from your diesel

Most of this job begins at a pump, which means a large portion of that is completed on site.

If you're still on the forecourt at Gulf, that is normally where the drain takes place — our technicians work on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the station's permission.

Before the engine has run — a garage is the single spot it is caught.

Fuel pulled out of the tank and through your filter, right to the high-pressure pump, is what occurs when your engine is started and the car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers the fuel filter and the lines together with the tank. That's still not a calamity, and our technicians sort it out where the vehicle stands. What determines it is whether the ignition was turned in the seconds after your receipt was checked.

Away from the pump, the next customer can get by — so yes, let the staff help you push it. Worth doing.

Firing the car just for four vehicle lengths? No.

## Will our technicians reach your part of Cleddans?

Cleddans is a residential suburb, and our vans are out to the town and to the areas near it on the usual runs: Merkland, Broomhill, Hillhead, Harestanes and Oxgang.

There are pages for the majority of locations across East Dunbartonshire, and the ones listed above are just the closest neighbours — so yours being left off the list means nothing about if we come.

Phone to check instead of guessing, particularly when you are on the border or anywhere a satnav can't find.

This map shows the ground the page includes.

Your car does not need to come to us. Our technicians work throughout the lot — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

How far, and how hard? The second of those matters more than the first, and so have both ready. The Audi A4 will have felt perfectly usual on the way back from the local primary school — they all do, and that is the snag. Diesel into a petrol motor mostly will not run at all: the person stops, and so does the wear. Petrol into a diesel fires up, ticks over, pulls away like nothing happened, while the high-pressure pump gets on with its work minus the lubrication the fuel should be giving it. No warning arrives, since behind the wheel nothing seems wrong.

## Roadside breakdowns across Cleddans

Not everyone finds a sensible place to pull in.

A normal call for us rather than an odd one: worked out after setting off, finished up on the verge on Newdyke Road or in a lay-by with the hazard lights going.

Out of the motor if it is not sensible to sit in it, with it when it is.

It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that's the trouble: restart the car to get to somewhere better and the mixture goes further into the fuel system with every mile covered.

Pressing on does your car far more harm than a van heading out to a difficult place, and that is no bother for us.

Try the drive home from The Chase Inn? No. It will start and it will pull away perfectly well, which is the issue — a diesel on a thinned tank runs generally whilst wearing the components the fuel should be lubricating. Leave the Dacia Duster then ring us.

## Petrol in a diesel, and your car has moved

The local M80 is the one that matters now, and runs under 3 miles from Cleddans.

It will often get you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it is smoke, a rough idle and power ebbing away — not a clean stop. Misfuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Take the first junction that is sensible, stop there, and don't restart the vehicle to reposition.

Assume the worst of that on a long run. Anything approaching the under 10 miles to the nearest city, and the petrol has been through the fuel filter, through the pump, through your injectors. Tell us when you call. What our technicians bring changes.

## Cleddans itself

Cleddans is a suburban area situated on the riverside in East Dunbartonshire, with a mix of terraced housing and local amenities. Cleddans sits at an elevation of 62 metres, close to the nearby places of Merkland, Broomhill, and Hillhead. Cleddans is located approximately 6.7 miles from Glasgow, making it a commuter-friendly location. Cleddans has a population of around 6279 residents, who enjoy the area's scenic riverside setting.

## Once we get to you around Cleddans: what follows

- The responses shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting: what went in, how much of that, and if your engine has run.

- The tank is drained completely.

- Lines cleaned, filter cleaned. Whatever is left after that isn't the thing that caused the issue.

- Clean diesel goes in, and then your system gets primed.

- After it is turned on, our technicians confirm it runs correctly on clean diesel.

That leaves it ready to pull away.

There's no need for a workshop at any point, as the work is all done where the car is, and when it's spotted soon, long-term damage is very rare.

Why so firm about leaving your keys alone? Since your pump is ahead of the injectors, and a worn-out one sends whatever it sheds on with the fuel. Call us. Leave the BMW 1 Series by Hillhead Community Centre.

## Cleddans AdBlue removal is a different job

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — the motor remains off — whereas this fault under it is a different one altogether.

Weakened diesel, and no lubrication left for your fuel system that depends on it. That's petrol.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus deposits.

Our engineers handle both, and AdBlue removal in Cleddans has its own page with the detail — including why it's often the more significant of the two.

## Cleddans costs for a petrol-in-diesel drain

What changes the price is laid out below, as the job isn't one job and our engineers cannot frankly put a single number on this page.

- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.

- Wrong fuel in, against what your tank takes — that proportion.

- Which went in: unleaded or AdBlue.

- Whether a technician can safely get to the car and work on it, which depends on where the vehicle is.

A clear answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the amount, and if it has run.

Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is ideal for that.

A couple of streets, then it stopped. Throttle dead, idle uneven, and the diesel Ford Fiesta is parked up near St. Flannan's RC Church. Your engine is not failing — that sluggishness is fuel that will not build pressure. There's no light on the dash for it, and so vehicles like yours normally get driven a second time before anybody picks up the phone. Please don't. Off, then phone us.

## Cleddans motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

## At a petrol station around Cleddans, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes, and it is where a big portion of this work happens.

Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Shell is somewhere we are often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you'll hear if working there's possible.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

It depends on the ratio instead of the litres, and far more on whether the engine has run.

What decides how much work is needed is whether that blend has been drawn through the system — because although five litres in an almost empty tank is a different case from five in a full one, either way that is the query.

## I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and keep it off.

Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does shift the issue out of that tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays salvageable far more often than drivers fear.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out properly, clearing and cleaning is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it.

A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a separate problem and it does not restore what petrol has diluted.

The pump still has to live with it, as your tank still has petrol in it later on.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever the vehicle is, our engineers drain and clean it there, so a drive to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

## Is the vehicle still with you?

Switched off is the way the car remains.

If you have already driven it, pull over somewhere safe, switch it off and keep it off.

This is recoverable from much more frequently than motorists assume, and a still, cold motor is the best position to be in.
