# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Clive? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled cars where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, across Clive and the rest of Shropshire. The very first thing to do is not to fire up your engine. While the motor has not turned over and the petrol is still inside the tank, a drain is almost always all it needs, and the next few minutes determine that, not how much went in.

Phone before all else begins, and you'll know what comes from there.

## Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in order

- Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will generally not run at all, and so the person stops there and so does the harm. Feed a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it idles, it pulls away — fine for several miles. Motorists have that muddled, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So do not start the car. And having started, do not trust it: the fuel system is grinding whenever you drive.

- Diesel ignites, and before it combusts it greases — the high-pressure fuel pump, the injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the ignition be as well: switching it on is often sufficient to prime the system, and priming carries petrol from the tank into precisely those components.

- Do not water down it. Diesel tipped on top takes out nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The grade makes no difference.

- Remain where you are if you sensibly can. A motor that has never shifted is the simplest one to sort, and we would sooner come to a difficult place than have it started. If you're pulled up on the verge on Wem Road, put your hazards on and keep it there.

- Before you phone, work out your position. Anything closest to you with a name on it, plus a postcode starting SY4 3 — that is what decides whether the van shows up or circles.

- Three replies settle the entire job: the stuff you poured in, the ballpark amount involved, plus if anything has been going since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

## Forecourt draining for petrol in a diesel

Pumps are where the work mostly begins, and where a big chunk of it closes.

Still at Valero? Then that is normally where it takes place. Garage forecourts are everyday for us, with the permission of the site.

A forecourt is the only spot the mistake can be halted before the engine has fired.

The few seconds between seeing the receipt and reaching for the key settle how much requires rinsing. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was drawn from that tank, through your filter and into your high-pressure pump. That means the lines and your filter require cleaning as well as your tank. It's not a calamity, and we can still deal with it where your car sits.

The staff will generally offer to move the car away from the petrol pump so the next motorist can get by. It is worth doing.

Moving it four spaces doesn't warrant cranking the motor.

## Service around Clive

Clive is a rural village, and so our team head out to it and to anywhere by it on those same runs: Grinshill, Yorton, Sansaw Heath, Alderton and Yorton Heath.

There are separate pages for nearly all towns around Shropshire, and the ones named above are merely the closest neighbours — so yours being missing from the list means nothing about if our engineers come.

Near a border, or somewhere your satnav gets wrong? Call us and enquire rather than assuming.

Check the map for the patch shown here.

Your vehicle doesn't need to come to us. We work over all of that — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

You'll be advised to shift the vehicle out of the gateway and fix it later. Please don't. On the zig-zags by Clive CofE Primary School, a misfilled BMW 3 Series running on diesel is in the way, and that's all it is. Crank it three more times being polite and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes the fuel lines, every prime pulls more petrol through your filter toward your pump. Let them complain. Phone us.

## Stuck by the kerb somewhere around Clive?

Some drivers find no safe place to pull over at all.

If you realised after setting off and ended up along the verge beside Holly Close, or at a lay-by somewhere with your hazards flashing, that's a common call for us and not an unusual one.

Sit with the motor while it's wise to be there, yet clear of the vehicle if it is not.

It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that is the problem: restart the vehicle to get to somewhere handier and the blend goes further into the system with every mile covered.

Driving on does the vehicle far more harm than our van coming out to an inconvenient place, and that is no trouble for us.

You head off at the end, once our engineers have started it and made sure it runs correctly on new diesel, with the fuel system bled. Before that, in the car park at the pub in the village, the contaminated fuel comes out of that tank, the lines get flushed and the filter comes off where your Peugeot 308 has a serviceable one. It all starts with three questions when our engineers get to the car: what was put in, how much of it, and whether it has been started since.

## A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

under 15 miles out of Clive, the local M54 is what counts here.

Lost power, a rough idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they come, rather than a tidy stop — and a misfuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

The next safe junction is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone.

Suppose the worst of it on a long run. Anything close to the under 25 miles to the closest city, and the petrol has been through the filter, through the pump, through the fuel injectors. Mention it when you call. What we bring differs.

## Clive itself

Clive is a small village in Shropshire, situated inland at an elevation of around 128 metres, with detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Clive lies near the villages of Grinshill and Yorton, and is close to the larger settlement of Sansaw Heath. Clive is located approximately 19.8 miles from Wrexham, the nearest city, and around 142.2 miles from London. Clive has a population of around 544 people, according to recent estimates.

## The visit around Clive, step by step

- We ask first, price after. What got in? How much? Has your motor run? Those replies alter what the work actually is.

- The contaminated fuel is pulled from your tank.

- Our engineers flush your fuel lines and clear your filter, so what's remaining in your system is not what caused the problem.

- Clean diesel goes in, and then the system gets primed.

- It is run with fresh diesel in it, and our technicians make sure that it's running correctly.

From there, you are ready to set off.

All of it is done where your car is, so it never has to go to a workshop, and when it has been spotted quickly, permanent damage is very uncommon.

Your pump rests upstream of the fuel injectors, and so whatever a worn one sheds moves onward with the fuel — which is why we're blunt about not driving on. Ring us, then leave your diesel Ford Focus where it is by Clive Village Hall.

## Clive AdBlue removal is a different problem

If what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening rule is unchanged — never start the car — yet this problem isn't.

The lubrication a fuel system depends on gets stripped away by petrol, which thins your diesel.

Rust and residue are what a diesel tank gets instead, because AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Our engineers deal with both, and AdBlue removal in Clive has its own page with the full story — including why it is frequently the more serious of the two.

Unfamiliar spots are where this occurs most, and the reason is mechanical rather than sloppy: the slimmer petrol nozzle goes into a newer diesel filler neck with almost no resistance at all. Filled up near All Saints without thinking, in a diesel Mercedes C-Class you have had for two days? Phone us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars tend to get driven further before anyone spots it, and mileage is what determines how much petrol gets to the injectors.

## Clive prices for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Our technicians cannot put one figure on this page truthfully, since this job is not one job. What changes it:

- Whether the engine has been started or driven. This is the main one.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.

- Whether it was unleaded or AdBlue.

- Whether a technician can safely get to your car and work on it, which hinges on where your car is.

A firm answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the amount, and if it has run.

If it isn't time-critical — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — works too.

That softness is the fuel failing to build pressure correctly, not your engine failing — and with no warning light for it, cars in that position generally get driven a second time before anyone rings. Don't. A couple of streets is all it got: throttle gone limp, idle turned uneven, and a diesel Dacia Duster now resting near Grinshill Village Hall. Switch the vehicle off and phone us.

## Clive drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## At a petrol station around Clive, can you do a fuel drain there?

A fair part of this work gets done there, so yes.

Tell us which one you are at when you ring and we'll tell you if our technicians can work there. With the station's permission our engineers visit Pace and the other forecourts nearby routinely.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

It hinges on the proportion instead of the litres, and much more on whether the engine has run.

Five litres into an almost dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mixture been pulled right through, or has it not?

## I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Switch off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop.

It is fixable much more commonly than people assume, even though driving is what moves the problem from your tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain and flush carried out correctly isn't an alteration and does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one, which is another reason to leave the car switched off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No.

Your pump still has to cope with it, as the tank still has petrol in it after that.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Not at all. Our engineers drain and clean the car wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

## Is the car still with you?

Leave the car switched off.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere sensible, switch off, then let the car stay that way.

This is recoverable from far more frequently than drivers expect, and a still, cold motor is the best position to be in.
