# Common End: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, throughout Common End and the rest of West Yorkshire. The first thing to do is not to turn on the motor. When the engine has not run and the petrol is still in that tank, a fuel drain is almost always all it needs, and the following few minutes determine that, not how much went in.

Our engineers will explain what the following part is. Call us — it goes ahead of anything else.

## Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in order

- Never start the car — and never rely on it when it runs. That is the thing motorists have wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol motor fed diesel normally just won't run, so the person stops and the wear halts with them. A diesel fed petrol generally starts, ticks over and drives off perfectly well for a couple of miles. It isn't fine. It's grinding the fuel system while you drive.

- Leave the car's ignition off too. Diesel has two roles: it combusts, and before it burns it protects the injection pump and the injectors. Petrol manages the first but not the second. Flicking the car's ignition on is usually enough to prime your system, which draws that petrol out of the tank and into exactly those parts.

- Topping up takes out nothing. It leaves you a larger tank of the same mixture, since a diesel fuel system won't cope with petrol by percentage as that guidance assumes — so don't pour diesel on top to dilute it. Octane is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.

- Wait where you are if you sensibly can. A vehicle that hasn't shifted is the easiest one to sort, and we'd much rather come to a difficult spot than have it started. If you are parked on the verge on Sunny Avenue, turn the hazards on then leave the car there.

- Before you phone, have your whereabouts. Anything closest to you with a name on it, plus a postcode that starts WF9 2 — that's what decides whether the technician arrives or circles.

- Three facts decide the full call-out: the fuel you poured in, the rough quantity involved, plus if it has been going since. The line is 0333 366 0103.

## Can petrol be pumped from a diesel at a forecourt?

Forecourts are where the work often starts, and where a big chunk of it finishes.

We operate on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the owner's permission, and so if you're still at JET that is generally where this drain takes place.

Before the motor has run — a forecourt is the one location this is spotted.

We can still put it right where it sits, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been fired up and driven there, and that pulled fuel through the fuel filter then into your high-pressure pump, all the way from the tank. None of that is a disaster, but the flush then has to go past the tank to the fuel lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between reading your receipt and going for the key are what settle that.

Move the vehicle out of the way if the staff suggest it, and they usually will. The next customer gets through the pump, and that's worth doing.

Cranking it over four vehicle lengths? No.

## Areas we cover in Common End

The same runs get us to South Elmsall, Priory Estate, Elm Estate, Moorthorpe and Minsthorpe besides Common End, which is a residential suburb.

There are pages for most places in West Yorkshire, and the ones listed above are simply the closest neighbours — so yours being left off that list means nothing whatsoever about if we come.

Guessing is the mistake to avoid, above all on the boundary or anywhere your phone struggles. Contact us and check.

The map shows the ground this page covers.

Our technicians work roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks throughout all of that, and your vehicle doesn't need to move to us.

Shift it out of that gateway and fix it later — that's what someone will say, and it's wrong. Parked on the zig-zags by South Elmsall Carlton Junior and Infant School, a misfuelled diesel BMW 3 Series is an inconvenience and nothing worse. Restarted three more times for good manners, it's no longer a tank fault but a fuel system one, as priming occurs with every start and more petrol goes through the fuel filter on to your pump. Let people complain. Call us.

## Stranded at the roadside anywhere in Common End?

Not everyone finds a decent place to stop.

If you noticed after setting off and ended up by the verge of Doncaster Road, or at a lay-by somewhere with your hazards going, that is a normal call for us rather than an unusual one.

Whether you stay beside the vehicle or keep away from it turns on if being nearby is sensible.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls that mix further into the system — and oblige it usually will, which is why the engine does not get restarted to limp somewhere better.

Driving on does your car far more harm than a technician coming out to an inconvenient location, and that is no problem for us.

Chance the trip home from South Elmsall Village Club? No. It will start and it will drive off just fine, which is the problem — a diesel on a thinned tank behaves typically whilst wearing the components the fuel should be protecting. Leave the Dacia Duster then ring us.

## A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

The local A1(M) is the road that counts here, and runs under 3 miles from Common End.

Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will usually do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a neat stop. Power ebbs away, the idle gets uneven, and there may be some smoke.

Come off at the first safe exit, turn off, and don't start it to reposition.

On a longer run — anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city — assume the mixture has been through the fuel filter, the pump and the fuel injectors, and mention it when you phone. It affects what our technicians bring.

Do not drive it home to buy yourself time. You already have it: nothing gets worse whilst your car stands, because a diesel Mercedes E-Class left at Frickley Coliery Welfare Cricket Club is doing none of what it did on the way there. Your pump has stopped turning.

## Where's Common End?

Common End is a suburban area located on the riverside in West Yorkshire, with a mix of semi-detached housing and local amenities. Common End sits at an elevation of 31 metres, close to the nearby towns of South Elmsall and Doncaster. Common End is part of a larger urban area, with nearby neighbourhoods including Priory Estate and Elm Estate. Common End has a population of approximately 4277 residents.

## The call-out around Common End, step by step

- We ask first, price after. What got in? How much? Has the engine run? Those replies change what the work actually is.

- Away flows the polluted fuel.

- Fuel lines are cleaned through and the fuel filter cleaned, leaving nothing in your system that created any of this.

- We put clean diesel in and prime the fuel system.

- Once it is started, we confirm it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

From there, you're ready to drive away.

All of it is done where the car is, so it never has to be taken to a garage, and when it has been noticed quickly, long-term damage is very rare.

Three things help when you phone from near St Mary the Virgin: which side the filler is on, whether a van can stand beside without blocking the road, and whether the engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the usual place our technicians work, so the location itself is seldom the issue — we'd much rather deal with a tight parking spot than with a motor that has been driven to somewhere more convenient. We will drain your Citroen C3, change your filter where there's a serviceable one, flush the lines then put fresh fuel through the full system, because by this point the worst of it is resting in the lines instead of in that tank.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, in Common End?

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first step is unchanged — the motor remains off — while this issue beneath it's a different one altogether.

The lubrication a fuel system depends on is taken away by petrol, which thins your diesel.

Corrosion and build-up are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Our engineers deal with both, and AdBlue removal around Common End has its own page with the details — including why it's often the more significant of the two.

## Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Common End

One figure wouldn't be honest here, since this is not one job. These are the things that move it:

- Whether the engine has been started or driven. This is the key one.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.

- Whether it is unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can a van get to it and work there sensibly?

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much got in, and if your engine has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range.

If it is not urgent — your car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

By now the tank is the least of it. Run a diesel and that mixture goes into your filter, into your lines, into the pump, into the rail — and none of that leaves with that tank contents. A diesel Seat Leon that made it near Frickley AFC needs its circuit purged. Clearing is not the same thing.

## Common End motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

## At a petrol station in Common End, can you do a fuel drain there?

Plenty of what our engineers do gets done nowhere else. So yes.

Regularly, provided the site consents: Shell, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that location is something our engineers answer there and then.

## Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

Ratio decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run.

What decides how much work is needed is if that blend has been sucked through your fuel system — because even though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different case from five in a full one, either way that is the query.

## Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What now?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that.

Driving is what takes the issue from that tank into your pump and injectors — but it's recoverable far more often than motorists assume, and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart the car.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It is not a modification, and so a drain and flush carried out correctly doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty.

A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. It belongs to a separate fault from a separate era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind restores.

Petrol stays in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no reprieve from it.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever the car is, our engineers drain and clean it there, so a visit to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

## Is your vehicle still with you?

Don't turn the car on again.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting the car after that.

This is recoverable from a lot more frequently than motorists fear, and a stationary, cold motor is the best position to be in.

Draining misfilled motors, Common End and the rest of West Yorkshire, wherever they are. Roadside. Forecourt. Home.
