# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Common Side? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled cars where they sit, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, throughout Common Side and the rest of West Yorkshire. The first thing to do is not to start the motor. When the engine has not turned over and the fuel is still in your tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it needs, and the next few minutes decide that, not how much got in.

Ring us before all else begins, and you'll know what comes next.

## What to try now about petrol in a diesel

- Give a petrol engine diesel and it will normally fail to run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it ticks over, it pulls away — fine for a couple of miles. Most people have that reversed, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So do not crank it. And having started, don't trust it: that fuel system is grinding whenever you drive.

- Diesel ignites, and before it combusts it greases — the high-pressure pump, the injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the car's ignition be also: flicking it on is usually all it takes to prime that system, and priming pulls petrol from your tank into precisely those parts.

- Topping up gets rid of nothing. It gives you a bigger tank of the same mixture, because a diesel fuel system does not handle petrol by percentage as that guidance implies — so never add diesel on top to thin it. Type is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.

- Stay where you are if you safely can. A car that has not moved is the quickest one to sort out, and our team would sooner get to an awkward spot than have it started. If you're parked on the verge on Redhill Drive, switch your hazards on then leave the car there.

- Find out where you are before ringing. A postcode that starts WF3 1, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise our van circles rather than turning up.

- What was put in, approximately how many litres, and whether the car has fired — these three facts shape your whole job. Ring 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Never take it home. The commute has already put a real quantity of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure fuel pump of that Volkswagen Tiguan, and the trip back would close to double it for no gain at all. Phone us from the platform if that is easier. Our engineers never need you hovering over the car outside Batley while our engineers work, and we'd much rather talk to you tonight than realise on Monday.

## At the forecourt: removing petrol from a diesel

Plenty of this job begins at the pump, meaning a large share of it is done on site.

We operate on garage forecourts all the time, with the station's permission, so if you are still at Esso that is generally where this drain takes place.

The forecourt is the one place it is spotted before the motor has started.

The few seconds between reading the receipt and going for your key settle how much needs flushing. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was fired up and moved to get there, so fuel was drawn from that tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means your lines and your filter need cleaning as well as the tank. It is not a calamity, and we can still deal with it where the car is.

The staff will usually happily push the car away from the pump so the next motorist can get by. It is worth doing.

Four vehicle lengths isn't worth a restart.

## Service around Common Side

Common Side is a residential suburb, and our vans go out to the town and to the villages near it on the usual trips: Haigh Moor, Nook, Beggarington Hill, Westerton and Upper Green.

Our technicians still come. The places above are just the immediate neighbours, and a page is there for nearly all places around West Yorkshire, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage.

Assuming is the habit to resist, above all on a border or somewhere the satnav goes wrong. Call us and ask.

The ground the page includes is on our map.

Your car does not need to travel to us. We operate over all of it — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

## Common Side: stuck wherever you pulled up

Not everyone finds a safe spot to pull in.

A routine call for us rather than a rare one: realised after setting off, landed along the verge beside Haigh Moor Road or in a lay-by with the hazard lights going.

Okay there? Stay with it. Not fine? Step out and clear of it.

It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that is the catch: restart it to reach somewhere handier and the mix goes further into the fuel system with every mile driven.

A technician heading to an awkward spot is no trouble for us, and it's much better for the car than pressing on.

Straightforward job, this one — until somebody takes it home. A diesel Ford Focus sitting outside The Hare and Hounds with petrol in that tank loses nothing by standing there overnight, and so leave the vehicle and call us once it's light. Expect a query about that drive there, though. Brief and chilly is exactly where petrol battles to burn, and what won't burn can get past the rings and into the oil.

## Petrol in a diesel, and the car has gone

The local M1 is the road which matters here, and sits under a mile from Common Side.

It will often get you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it's smoke, an uneven idle and power ebbing away — not a tidy stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Pull off at the next sensible junction, turn off, and don't restart the car to reposition.

Long run? Anything approaching the under 5 miles to the nearest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that arrived at by the contamination. Say that on the call, as it changes what goes in the van.

Nothing gets worse while it stands. Whatever your diesel Dacia Duster did on the way to Haigh Hall Spring Wood, it's doing none of it now: your pump is not turning. So take your time — but don't drive it home to buy yourself any.

## A little about Common Side

Common Side is a suburban area located on the outskirts of Wakefield in West Yorkshire, situated near the lakeside at an elevation of 119 metres. Common Side is characterized by its semi-detached housing and is close to nearby places such as Haigh Moor and Nook. Common Side has a population of approximately 2026 residents and is about 3.7 miles from Wakefield city centre. Common Side is also relatively distant from London, at around 164.1 miles away.

## Once we arrive with you in Common Side: what happens

- Three things get established before any quote — your fuel that got in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.

- Our technicians clear the tank of the tainted fuel.

- Our technicians purge the fuel lines and clear the fuel filter, and so what's remaining in your system is not what caused the problem.

- The system gets bled, on fresh diesel.

- Once it is fired up, our engineers confirm it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

That leaves it ready to drive away.

Our engineers do all of it wherever the car has come to a stop, which means it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been noticed early, it's very unusual for there to be lasting damage.

Your pump waits upstream of the fuel injectors, so whatever a worn one sheds moves on with the fuel — which is why we're firm about not driving on. Phone us, and leave the diesel BMW X1 where it is close to West Ardsley Methodist Church.

## A different matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Common Side

The fault isn't the same, though the opening rule is — do not fire it up — if what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol.

Weakened diesel, and no protection left for your fuel system that relies on it. That is petrol.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it brings rust and residue in its place.

Our technicians handle both, and AdBlue removal around Common Side has its own page with the detail — including why it's frequently the more significant of the two.

## What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost in Common Side

One figure would not be honest here, since this is not one job. These are the things that shift it:

- Has it been run or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.

- Wrong fuel in, against what the tank holds — that ratio.

- AdBlue or petrol, whichever went in.

- Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there's sensible for a technician.

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much got in, and whether your engine has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range.

For the car at home that's going nowhere and is not pressing, works too.

What takes place next is the problem. The engine immediately sucks the petrol still resting in your filter and the feed lines back round through the pump a second time, because emptying a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Drain it and put fresh diesel in, a person sure of themselves will tell you — and that tip is half true, because do it to a diesel Volvo XC60 parked up, Tingley Methodist Church say, and the thing starts, which is what makes it sound sensible. Phone us instead. Our engineers flush the circuit and take the fuel filter off where the car has a working one, and that's the difference between the vehicle being put right and the vehicle just starting.

## Petrol in diesel: everyday queries around Common Side

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Common Side?

Yes, and it's where a big part of this work gets done.

Regularly, provided the site agrees: JET, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether we can work in that spot is something we answer straight away.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Proportion settles it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run.

What decides how much work is required is whether that mixture has been pulled through the fuel system — because although five litres in an almost empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one, either way that is the question.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and keep it off.

It is salvageable a lot more frequently than motorists assume, even though driving is what takes the issue from your tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out correctly isn't a modification and does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty.

Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has weakened is not replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a different issue. So no.

Your pump still has to cope with it, since your tank still has petrol in it after that.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

Wherever the car is, our technicians drain and flush it there, so a visit to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

## You, and the car, still together?

Never turn it back on.

Turn it off somewhere safe then leave it off, if you have already driven it.

Cold, parked, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. Drivers fear this a lot more than they need to.

Emptying wrongly fuelled cars, Common Side and the rest of West Yorkshire, wherever they are. Roadside. Forecourt. Home.
