# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Cookham?

If you have not turned on your engine as yet, do not. A drain and nothing more is nearly always what a motor needs while the petrol is still sitting in that tank and the motor has not yet been started, which is why it's the following few minutes that count, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel comes to the car wherever it has come to rest in Cookham or the rest of Berkshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and cleans it there.

Contact us so we shall tell you what follows next before you do anything else.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to do now

- Never crank it — and don't believe it if it runs. That is the part people have wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol engine filled with diesel normally just will not run, and so the person stops and the wear halts with them. A diesel given petrol usually starts, idles and moves off just fine for several miles. It's not okay. It is eating into the fuel system as you drive.

- Diesel combusts, and before it burns it lubricates — your injection pump, those injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the car's ignition off as well: switching it on is commonly all it takes to prime your system, and priming carries petrol from the tank into precisely those parts.

- Don't water down it. Diesel added on top gets rid of nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The type makes no difference.

- Stay put if it is safe to. Hazards on, ignition off, keep the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Grange Road, anywhere — a difficult spot for us is better than a started engine, and nothing is easier for us to deal with than a vehicle that never shifted.

- Have your location ready before you phone. A postcode beginning SL6 9 and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it is the difference between a van showing up and the van circling.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Expect three points — what went in, approximately how much, and if your car has been started. Your responses determine whatever follows.

Nothing about the hours since has cost you anything. Fuel sitting in a tank is inert, and so a diesel Renault Megane sitting at the nearest station this morning is no worse at five than it was at nine — what sucked weakened diesel through the pump was the journey in. Phone before you head off to collect the vehicle.

## Removing petrol from your diesel on a forecourt

Forecourts are where this work mostly starts, and where a fair portion of it finishes.

We operate on station forecourts regularly, with the site's agreement, so if you are still at the nearest petrol station that's generally where the drain takes place.

Nowhere other than a garage can the mistake be stopped with your motor still untouched.

The few seconds between reading the till receipt and reaching for the key determine how much requires cleaning. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was fired up and driven to get there, so fuel was drawn from the tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the fuel lines and the fuel filter require flushing as well as that tank. It is not a calamity, and we can still put it right where your car is.

The attendants will normally happily push the car out from the pump so the next motorist can get through. That's worth doing.

Shifting it four spaces doesn't justify starting it.

## Cookham and the towns near it

Those same journeys carry us to Cookham Rise, Cookham Dean, Winter Hill, Bigfrith and Furze Platt besides Cookham, which is a small village.

We still come. The places above are just the closest neighbours, and a page exists for nearly all places across Berkshire, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage.

Contact us and ask rather than presuming, particularly if you're on the boundary or somewhere the satnav can't find.

The area the page spans sits on this map.

Roadside, forecourt, drive, car park: all of that is ground our engineers cover, and none of it asks the car to travel to us.

A diesel pump meters fuel on demand, and a frantic morning drive demands plenty — so three miles in the BMW 3 Series feels like nothing and isn't. Twenty to nine at the gates of Cookham Rise Primary School, already late, the receipt in your hand saying unleaded: hazards on, motor off, call us.

## Cookham: stuck where you stopped

A chance to pull in somewhere suitable does not fall to everyone.

If you realised after setting off and landed along the verge on Coxborrow Close, or at a lay-by somewhere with your hazards going, that's a normal call for us instead of an unusual one.

Safe right there? Remain with it. Not safe? Step out and away from it.

Don't fire up your motor to nurse it somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging the blend further into the fuel system.

We'll take the van to a difficult location without any fuss, and for your car that is far better than pressing on.

What we'll ask about is if that drive there was short and cold, because that is where petrol is least likely to burn correctly — and whatever won't burn can slip past the piston rings and into the oil. Right up to the moment somebody drives it home, a diesel Nissan Qashqai sitting in the parking area outside The Old Swan Uppers with a tank of petrol in it is an easy job. Nothing worsens whilst it stands, so leave it there overnight then phone us next morning.

## Petrol in a diesel, but the car has rolled

This is where the local A404(M) comes into it — under 5 miles away from Cookham.

A drop in power, a rough idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they come, rather than a neat stop — and a misfuelled diesel will often take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

Get off at the first sensible junction, switch off, and don't start the vehicle to reposition.

It affects what our technicians bring, and so say so when you call: on a longer run — anything close to the under 25 miles to the closest city — assume the contamination has been through the filter, your pump and the injectors.

Nothing gets worse while it stands. Whatever your diesel Ford Focus did on the way to Alfred Major Recreation Ground, it is doing none of it now: your pump is not turning. So take your time — but never drive it home to buy yourself any.

## A little about Cookham

Cookham is a locality situated on the River Thames in Berkshire, with Cookham Rise and Cookham Dean nearby. Cookham has a population of around 1634 people and is characterized by semi-detached housing. Cookham sits at an elevation of 36 metres, close to Winter Hill, and is located approximately 25.9 miles from London. Cookham is also near the city of St Albans, which is 21.3 miles away.

## What follows when we reach you around Cookham

- We check what was put in, how much, and whether the engine has run. The replies alter the work, which is why we ask before pricing.

- Your tank is emptied of it.

- What is remaining in the system should not be what created the trouble, so the lines get rinsed and the filter cleaned.

- Priming follows, once fresh diesel is in.

- It is started with fresh diesel in it, and our technicians confirm that it is running smoothly.

From that point, you're ready to drive away.

Our engineers do all of it wherever the vehicle has ended up, which means it never has to go to a garage, and if it has been caught early, it is very uncommon for there to be long-term damage.

## A different matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Cookham

If what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first step is the same — don't crank it — yet the issue isn't.

Petrol thins your diesel and strips the protection the system relies on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus build-up.

Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the details sits on its own Cookham page. Both are ours to handle.

## Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Cookham

Our technicians cannot put one figure on this page frankly, because the job is not one job. What moves it:

- Whether your motor has been run or driven. This is the key one.

- Wrong fuel in, against what that tank holds — that proportion.

- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever was put in.

- Where is it? And can a van get to it and work there safely?

A firm answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the quantity, and if it has run.

If it isn't pressing — the car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

A few streets, then it stopped. Throttle limp, idle uneven, and your diesel Peugeot 208 is parked up by Cookham Library. The engine isn't failing — that softness is fuel that will not build pressure. There is no light on the dash for it, so cars like yours normally get driven once more before anybody picks up the phone. Please don't. Off, and phone us.

## Questions our technicians hear about petrol in diesel around Cookham

## Fuel drains on a Cookham petrol station forecourt

A good portion of this work gets done there, so yes.

Our technicians work at BP and the other forecourts nearby all the time, with the station's agreement — tell us which one you are at when you call and we'll tell you if our technicians can work there.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

It rests on the proportion instead of the litres, and a lot more on whether the engine has run.

Five litres in an almost empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is needed is if that blend has been drawn through the system.

## I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Pull in somewhere sensible, switch off, then leave the car off.

Driving is what moves the trouble from that tank into the pump and injectors — but it's recoverable much more regularly than people expect, and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out correctly, draining and flushing is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one, which is another reason to leave the car turned off.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. It belongs to a separate fault from a separate era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind restores.

The tank still has petrol in it later on, and the pump still has to cope with it.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever the vehicle is, our technicians drain and flush it there, so a drive to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

## Still with your car?

Shut off is the way the car stays.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere safe, turn off, and let the vehicle remain that way.

A still, cold vehicle is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from far more frequently than people expect.

At the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home — on-site fuel draining around Cookham and across Berkshire.
