# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Cove? Don't Start It

Don't fire up your engine. If the fuel is still in your tank and your engine has not yet been started, a drain is almost always all it needs — and that gets settled in the next few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they are, across Cove and the remainder of Hampshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive.

Ring us before everything else starts, so you will hear what comes after that.

## What now? Petrol in a diesel, in order

- Give a petrol engine diesel and it will generally refuse to run at all, and so the person stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it ticks over, it pulls away — fine enough for a few miles. Most people have that muddled, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So don't start the car. And if started, never depend on it: that fuel system is wearing as you drive.

- Two things, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps that high-pressure fuel pump and injectors greased. Petrol only handles the one. That is why your ignition remains off too — turn it on and you commonly prime the system, and that's petrol exiting that tank for just those parts.

- Do not water down it. Diesel tipped on top takes out nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The grade makes no difference.

- Sit tight if it is wise to. Hazards on, engine off, keep it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Minley Road, anywhere — an odd location for us beats a started motor, and nothing is quicker for us to sort than a motor that never moved.

- A van turning up rather than circling hinges on two things: a postcode that starts GU14 9, and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it. Have both prepared before you phone.

- Three facts settle your whole job: the stuff you poured in, the approximate amount of it, plus whether it has been running since. The line is 0333 366 0103.

Quarter past eight, a rushed fill on the drive in, and it dawns on you somewhere around eleven — by that point the diesel Renault Megane has been parked at Farnborough Main for three hours. Phone and keep the car exactly where it sits. The journey in is the thing that is key here, because diesel has two roles on its way through the engine: it combusts, and before it combusts it lubricates that high-pressure pump and its injectors. Petrol does the first and not the second. So those few miles were driven with the pump labouring on a fuel that had lost much of the protection it is designed around — which is why the thing we ask is how many miles you drove, not how long the vehicle has been parked.

## On the forecourt: clearing petrol from a diesel

Much of the work begins at a forecourt, so a fair part of that ends up completed there.

The drain normally gets done right there. Still on the forecourt at Morrisons? Given the owner's agreement, that is a spot we work, and often.

A forecourt is the only setting this gets stopped before the motor has started.

The few seconds between reading the receipt and reaching for your key settle how much requires rinsing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and moved to get there, so fuel was drawn from that tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as your tank. It is not a calamity, and we can still put it right where the car is.

Attendants will usually help out pushing it clear of the pump, which lets the next customer get past. Welcome the assistance.

Shifting the car four lengths doesn't justify firing the motor.

## Cove plus the towns near it

Cove is a residential suburb, and so our technicians get out to it and to the places by it on those same rounds: West Heath, Southwood, Rafborough, Fox Lane and Farnborough.

Our technicians do come. The places above are only the closest neighbours, and a page exists for most locations around Hampshire, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage.

Presuming is the habit to resist, particularly on a boundary or somewhere a satnav gets lost. Phone to check.

This map shows the area this page spans.

Your car doesn't need to come to us. We operate over all of that — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

## Stranded by the kerbside around Cove

Not everyone has a decent place to pull over.

A routine call for us and not a rare one: noticed after setting off, landed on the verge beside St John's Road or at a lay-by with the hazards going.

Whether you stay with the vehicle or step away from it turns on if sitting nearby is safe.

Do not start up your motor to limp it somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing that mix further into your fuel system.

A van coming to an inconvenient location is no bother for us, and it's far better for the car than driving on.

Simple job, this one — till somebody takes it home. A diesel Ford Focus parked outside Plough & Horses with petrol in the tank loses nothing by standing there overnight, and so leave the vehicle then ring us once it is light. Expect a query about the run there, though. Brief and chilly is exactly where petrol fails to burn, and what will not burn can get past the piston rings then into the oil.

## A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

under a mile from Cove, the local M3 is what matters now.

Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will frequently manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a tidy stop. Power ebbs away, the idle goes uneven, and there may be smoke.

Take the first junction that's sensible, stop there, and do not start the vehicle to move it.

It alters what our technicians bring, and so say so when you call: on a longer drive — anything approaching the under 50 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through the filter, your pump and the injectors.

A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically: your fuel has to hold pressure, not only burn. Thin that fuel and pressure which should build then stay built bleeds past tolerances instead, leaving your engine a poorer, later, less even delivery than it was built about. Petrol thins diesel, and diesel has to be thick enough to seal the tightly fitted components it flows through — that's the full process. It explains the usual Birchwood Reserve call too: a diesel Peugeot 3008 that went out without a murmur and came back down on power, rough at idle, possibly smoking a little. None of which is the engine failing, and that is the bit worth hearing. The fuel has stopped behaving like diesel. Put your fuel right and it stops.

## Cove itself

Cove is a suburban area in Hampshire, situated on the riverside with an elevation of 69 metres. Cove lies within the South East region of England, approximately 31.7 miles from London and 28.1 miles from the nearby city of Winchester. Cove is characterised by its semi-detached housing and is surrounded by nearby places such as West Heath, Southwood, and Rafborough. Cove has a population of around 7647 residents.

## The call-out around Cove, step by step

- Our engineers find out what got in, how much, and if the engine has run. The replies change the work, which is why our technicians ask before pricing.

- Away comes the polluted mixture.

- We clean the lines and clean your filter, and so what's remaining in the system is not what created the problem.

- Priming follows, once new diesel is in.

- The motor is turned on and tested to be sure it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to pull away.

There's no need for a workshop at any point, because the work is all done where your car is, and when it's caught soon, long-term damage is very uncommon.

Why we're direct about not driving on: your pump waits upstream of the injectors, and so whatever a worn-out pump sheds moves downstream with the fuel. Leave the BMW 1 Series near St John the Baptist then ring us.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Cove is a different problem

The fault is not the same, though the opening instruction is — never crank it — if what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and strips out the protection your fuel system relies on.

Corrosion and deposits are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Frequently the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the full story lives on its own Cove page. Both are ours to deal with.

## Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Cove

Truthfully, no single number belongs on a page like this. The job changes. Here is what changes it:

- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, measured against how much that tank holds.

- Which was put in: petrol or AdBlue.

- Whether our van can safely get to your vehicle and work on it, which hinges on where your vehicle is.

The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight and not as a range.

Not pressing, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.

Fixed and starting aren't the same thing, and the difference is your circuit: our engineers flush it, and take the fuel filter off where there's a working one. Compare that with the certain advice you will get — drain the vehicle, refill with clean diesel. Only half right. Do exactly that to a diesel Volvo XC60 close to Our Lady Of Lourdes Church and it will start, which is exactly why the suggestion sounds plausible. Then the engine pulls the petrol left behind in the fuel filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through your pump, as draining a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Ring us instead.

## Petrol in diesel queries from Cove drivers

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Cove?

A fair part of this work happens there, so yes.

Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we will tell you if our engineers can work there. With the site's agreement we work at Esso and the other forecourts nearby regularly.

## A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether the motor has run matters much more, though the proportion counts too, instead of the litres.

A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different scenarios, certainly. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if the fuel system has had that blend sucked through it.

## I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that.

It is salvageable a lot more frequently than drivers fear, even though driving is what takes the issue from the tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

It's not a change, so a drain then flush carried out properly does not void a manufacturer's warranty.

A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

Two-stroke oil solves a separate problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No.

Petrol remains in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There's no need to bring it to a franchised dealer, as our technicians drain and clean your car wherever it is.

## You, and your vehicle, still together?

Do not switch your engine back on.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere sensible, turn off, and let it stay that way.

This is recoverable from far more frequently than people expect, and a parked, cold motor is the best position to be in.

Throughout Hampshire and around Cove: call-out fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
