# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Craigend: What Happens Now

Whatever you do, never switch your engine on, even for a moment, to shift the car. Pause; leave the vehicle off.

Has not been run? Then petrol in a diesel tends to be a straightforward drain-and-flush job wherever the vehicle has stopped — and no other factor settles that more than these next few minutes do.

What follows is the sequence from here, wherever in Craigend you are.

## Petrol in a diesel? What to do in minute one

Work through the following in order, first.

- Take your keys out. Even your ignition by itself can prime the fuel system, drawing petrol out of your tank to precisely the components it damages, and so keep the vehicle alone completely.

- Topping up with diesel seems like it dilutes the trouble. It does not: nothing comes out, and that tank simply carries more of the same.

- Make the vehicle easy to see before anything else — hazards on — if there's moving traffic anywhere near you.

- However short the way, starting it to move it is the thing to avoid. At a forecourt, push it clear of the petrol pump by hand instead, and ask the attendants to help.

- Hold on to the till receipt. It says which fuel got in and roughly how much, which is the first thing we will ask.

On the M8, under a mile from Craigend, the next junction is the spot to leave the car; anywhere, the first sensible spot to stop. Do not push on to the services. Then go back to stage one.

## The fork in each Craigend fuel drain: has it run yet?

What happens next rests on one answer, and just one.

If it has not once been started:

- Only the tank has petrol in it for now.

- Where the vehicle stands is usually where this work is done: a drain, then a flush.

- No spot is better, and it's why the first stage counts so much.

Run at all, however briefly:

- Some petrol has left the tank by now, passed through the fuel filter, and got into your lines.

- Run it farther and that petrol reaches the injectors, having passed through the pump first.

- The further it went, the bigger this job — the fuel lines, the fuel filter, and sometimes more besides.

Why the line falls there: diesel lubricates the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors as it passes through them, and petrol doesn't.

Nothing is damaged by petrol that's just waiting in a tank.

Petrol being pumped is wearing the components that move it.

## Craigend, petrol in a diesel: have these ready before you call

A little preparation is the difference between a technician that finds you and a technician that goes round.

- Your location: a postcode beginning G33 5 serves best.

- Wherever you have parked, the road's name is useful — whether that's Mossvale Road or somewhere else — and so does the name of a car park.

- What a car park serves is the quickest way to find it, so say the landmark — such as the one outside Spar.

- That it is a diesel, plus the make and model of the vehicle.

- Petrol or AdBlue? Say which. They are different jobs, and AdBlue has a separate Craigend page.

- How long the nozzle was in, or the litres from the receipt — either tells us how much.

- The miles it did, and how hard, if it ran at all.

- Whose car it is. Some hire and company contracts want the owner to authorise the work, and that is easier settled before our technicians turn up than after.

Then phone 0333 366 0103. If it can wait — the vehicle is at home with going nowhere — does the trick as well.

## While you wait for a fuel drain around Craigend

Stick to these: well-intended help does the harm during the wait.

- Where the car has stopped decides where you wait. Exposed: away from it, clear of the traffic. Safe: with it. Either way, safety ahead of the vehicle.

- Not to roll it a few yards, not to check it is all right, not as a passer-by's favour: nobody starts it.

- No additives. Two-stroke oil, injector cleaner, something from the boot — none of that takes the petrol back out.

- Siphoning petrol into a can at the roadside is dangerous — and it also leaves whatever fuel has already gone beyond the tank. Do not drain the car yourself.

- Not for your radio, not for your windows: your ignition remains off.

## The fuel drain, step by step, after our van arrives

- Three queries. What went in, how much, and if it's run. The answers set the job, which is why the price comes after them and not before.

- Out of that tank comes the tainted mix: the tank is drained.

- The fuel lines are rinsed. If it ran, that petrol has shifted beyond that tank, and the lines are holding it.

- Then your filter: swapped where there's a serviceable one, cleared where there is not.

- The fuel system is primed with fresh diesel.

- The first start on new diesel. Once priming is finished, the motor is fired up and our technicians make sure that it runs correctly.

Only once it is running on clean diesel do our technicians leave.

The vehicle goes back to normal driving straight away, and permanent damage is very unusual when it has been caught soon.

## Craigend, after the fuel drain: back on the road

- Drive normally. There is nothing special to do after it has been started on clean fuel.

- Watch the first miles. A warning light, smoke, a lumpy idle or a flat spot under your throttle tells you to pull over then call us back.

- Hold on to the paperwork. A hire firm, a fleet manager or an insurer may ask what was carried out.

- Next time, check the petrol pump. The label, not the colour of its handle.
