# Cranleigh: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Do not turn on your engine. While the fuel is still inside the tank and the engine has not run, a tank drain is nearly always all it requires — and that's settled in the coming few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled cars where they stand, all over Cranleigh and the rest of Surrey, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive.

Ring us so our team shall explain what happens after that before you try any more.

## What next? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

- As you drive, the pump and the fuel injectors wear. This is why you never crank it, and why you never trust it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel in particular — the bit people get wrong — is that it pulls away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor typically cannot run at all, which stops the person and stops the wear with them. This one lets you drive on.

- Turning your ignition on often primes your system, and priming is what carries petrol out of that tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol manages the burning and none of the oiling. Leave your ignition off.

- Don't weaken it. Diesel tipped on top takes out nothing, so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The octane makes no difference.

- Sit tight if it's sensible to. Hazards on, engine off, keep the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on High Street, anywhere — a tricky place for us trumps a started diesel, and nothing is simpler for us to deal with than a vehicle that never shifted.

- A van turning up rather than circling rests on two things: a postcode starting GU6 8, and whatever is next to you with a sign on it. Have both ready before you ring.

- What was put in, approximately how much, and if the engine has started — the three answers decide the full job. Dial 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Don't take it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has gone through your injection pump in real volume on the trip in, and the trip back would more or less double that for nothing at all. Phone — the platform is fine. There's no need to stand over the Volkswagen Golf outside Chilworth while the work goes on, and we'd very much rather speak to you tonight than discover on Monday.

## At the forecourt: draining petrol from the diesel

A good share of this job is done at the pump, as that's where it mostly kicks off.

Still at Shell? Then that is usually where it happens. Petrol station forecourts are normal for us, with the consent of the owner.

A forecourt is the only setting it can be stopped before the engine has started.

Everywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from your tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That's not a disaster, and our technicians can still put it right where it stands. It does mean the lines and the filter need flushing as well as your tank, and that's determined by the few seconds between reading the receipt and reaching for your key.

Attendants will normally chip in pushing it out from the petrol pump, which lets the next motorist get past. Accept the offer.

Four car lengths isn't worth the risk.

## Can we cover your side of Cranleigh?

Elmbridge Village, Rowly, Ridgebridge Hill, Palmers Cross, Ewhurst — all of these on our journeys that carry us out to Cranleigh as well, a village.

There are pages for nearly all places in Surrey, and the ones mentioned above are merely the immediate neighbours — so yours being missing from this list means nothing whatsoever about if our engineers come.

Presuming is the thing to resist, above all on a boundary or anywhere a satnav gets lost. Ring us and check.

Check the map for the patch covered here.

Roadside, forecourt, private drive, car park: every bit of it is territory our engineers cover, and none of it asks the car to come to us.

Hazards on. Ignition off. Phone. It's twenty to nine by Cranleigh Church of England Primary School, you are late, and the till receipt shows unleaded — and although three miles in the BMW 3 Series sounds like nothing, fuel gets delivered on demand, and a frantic drive asks for plenty of it.

## Roadside stops around Cranleigh

Not everybody has a chance to pull in somewhere sensible.

If you realised after setting off and ended up along the verge beside Victoria Road, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazards flashing, that is a common call for us instead of a rare one.

Out of the motor if it is not wise to sit there, beside it when it is.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws the blend further into the system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why the engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere handier.

We'll bring our van to a difficult place without any trouble, and for the vehicle that's far better than pressing on.

## Petrol in a diesel, and the vehicle has gone

under 15 miles out of Cranleigh, the local M25 is what matters here.

It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it is smoke, an uneven idle and power falling away — not a clean stop. Misfuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

The first safe junction is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone.

It changes what we bring, and so mention it when you phone: on a longer run — anything near the under 25 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through your filter, the pump and the injectors.

## Cranleigh itself

Cranleigh is a village situated in the Surrey countryside, near the River Wey and surrounded by rolling hills. Cranleigh has a mix of housing types, but semi-detached homes are particularly prevalent, and its population of around 1147 people gives it a small, community-focused feel. Cranleigh is located near several other small settlements, including Elmbridge Village and Rowly, and is close to Ridgebridge Hill. Cranleigh sits at an elevation of 56 metres above sea level, in a scenic riverside setting.

## What happens when our technicians arrive with you in Cranleigh

- Three things get established before any quote — your fuel that was put in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.

- The tainted fuel comes from your tank.

- Our engineers flush the lines and clean your filter, so what's left in the fuel system isn't what started the problem.

- Bleeding the system follows, once new diesel is in.

- When it's turned on, we make sure it runs correctly on clean diesel.

From there, you are ready to set off.

All of it is done where your car is, so it never needs to go to a garage, and when it has been spotted quickly, long-term damage is very rare.

Phoning from near Cranleigh Village Hall? Three things help us. The filler — which side of your car it is on. Room for a technician next to you, without the road being blocked. And if anything has run since the fill-up. The spot itself barely counts: on-street is where we work most, and we would far rather have a narrow bay than a car a person has driven somewhere easier. Then it is a drain for the Ford Focus, a filter change where there is one worth changing, lines purged, clean fuel put round the entire circuit. By now the worst of that is in the fuel lines and not the tank.

## Cranleigh AdBlue removal is a distinct job

If what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening step is unchanged — never crank it — but the fault is not.

Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and strips out the lubrication your fuel system depends on.

Corrosion and build-up are what a diesel tank gets instead, since AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Both are ours. There's a separate Cranleigh page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

A throttle gone dead, white smoke, an uneven idle, knocking: that is a misfuelled diesel Mercedes A-Class telling you what's wrong. Do not start the car to find a better location — switch off where you have stopped, close to Cranleigh Library or anywhere else.

## Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Cranleigh

One figure wouldn't be honest here, because this isn't one job. These are the things that move it:

- Whether the motor has been run or driven. This is the main one.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, judged against how much the tank takes.

- Whether it is petrol or AdBlue.

- Where the vehicle is, and if a van can safely reach and work on it.

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much got in, and if the motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range.

Not time-critical, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.

Put right and starting aren't the same thing, and the difference is your circuit: our engineers flush it, and take the filter off where there's a working one. Compare that with the certain tip you'll get — drain the vehicle, refill with clean diesel. Half true. Do exactly that to a diesel Renault Captur by Cranleigh Methodist Church and it will start, which is exactly why the tip sounds plausible. Then the engine draws the petrol left behind in the filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through your pump, as draining a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Phone us instead.

## Petrol in diesel queries from Cranleigh drivers

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Cranleigh?

A fair portion of this work happens there, so yes.

Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like BP is somewhere we're often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you'll hear if working there is possible.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres aren't the measure. Proportion is, and far more than either, it counts whether anything has been run.

What determines how much work is needed is if that blend has been pulled through the system — since although five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one, either way that is the question.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Pull over somewhere safe, switch off, and keep the vehicle off.

Driving is what moves the problem from your tank into your pump and injectors — but it's fixable much more frequently than people assume, and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

It is not a change, so a drain then flush carried out properly doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one, which is another reason to leave the vehicle switched off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. It belongs to a distinct issue from a different era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind puts back.

After that? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Wherever the car is, our technicians drain and clean it there, so a trip to the main dealer does not come into it.

## Still with your vehicle?

The motor remains off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting the vehicle later.

Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. Motorists fear this far more than they need to.

Clearing wrongly fuelled vehicles, Cranleigh and the rest of Surrey, wherever they are. Kerbside. Forecourt. Home.
