# Cranwell: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Never fire up your engine. If the fuel is still in your tank and the motor has not turned over, a tank drain is almost always all it needs — and that is settled in the following few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled vehicles where they sit, all over Cranwell and the rest of Lincolnshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive.

We can tell you what the next stage will be. Phone — that comes before anything else.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to do first

- Do not fire it up. Started regardless? Then never depend on it. Diesel in a petrol motor typically won't run, and so the motorist stops and the wear halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It moves off normally, for a couple of miles. Most people get that backwards. It is not okay — the fuel system is grinding every mile you cover.

- Diesel ignites, and before it ignites it protects — your high-pressure pump, its injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the ignition be too: flicking it on is often enough to prime your system, and priming pulls petrol from your tank into just those parts.

- Do not pour diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system does not tolerate petrol by percentage in the way that advice implies, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it simply gives you a fuller tank of the same blend. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.

- We would rather get to a difficult spot than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay still. Nothing is easier to handle than a vehicle that has never moved. On the verge on Willow Lane, that means hazards on then leave the vehicle.

- Before you dial, get your whereabouts. Anything next to you with a label on it, plus a postcode that starts NG34 8 — that's what settles whether the technician turns up or circles.

- What was put in, about how much, plus whether the car has run — those three details shape the entire visit. Ring 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Tonight, please, rather than Monday. Driving it home is the one thing not to do: a commute has put real quantity through the pump already, petrol-thinned diesel and plenty of it, and the return journey would about double the figure to no purpose. The Renault Megane can wait at Ruskington perfectly well. Call from the platform if handier; standing over us whilst our technicians work is not needed.

## On a forecourt: clearing petrol from the diesel

Much of the job starts at the pump, which means a large share of it is finished at one.

The drain normally gets done there and then. Still on the forecourt at Murco? Given the owner's permission, that is a place our engineers work, and often.

Before your engine has started — a garage is the only setting this gets caught.

Fuel pulled out of the tank and through the filter, all the way to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what occurs when the motor is started and the vehicle is driven to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes your filter and the fuel lines as well as your tank. That is still not a catastrophe, and our technicians put it right where your car stands. What settles it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after the receipt was checked.

The attendants will normally happily push it out from the petrol pump so the next motorist can get by. It is worth doing.

Starting it for four car lengths? Not a chance.

## Can our technicians reach your end of Cranwell?

Leasingham, Brauncewell, North Rauceby, Holdingham, Byards Leap — every one of them on the runs that take us across to Cranwell too, a rural village.

If yours isn't on that list it does not mean we don't come — there are pages for most places around Lincolnshire, and the ones named above are merely the immediate neighbours.

Ring us to ask rather than presuming — borders particularly, and anywhere a satnav can struggle with.

The patch the page spans is on this map.

We operate at the roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks throughout all of it, and the car does not need to come to us.

Each restart primes your lines and pulls more petrol past the fuel filter then into your pump. So a wrongly fuelled diesel BMW 3 Series on the zig-zags outside Cranwell Primary School (Foundation) is an inconvenience, whereas the same car fired up three more times to be courteous is a fuel system and not a tank. Somebody will urge you to shift it out of the gateway and fix it later. Do not. Leave it, let them moan, and call us.

## Stuck at the kerbside around Cranwell

Not everybody has a chance to pull over somewhere safe.

A common call for us rather than a rare one: noticed after setting off, ended up on the verge of Sleaford Road or in a lay-by with the hazard lights on.

Fine where you are? Stay beside it. Not fine? Climb out and away from it.

Never fire up your engine to nurse the car somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing the mix further into the system.

Driving on does the vehicle far more harm than a van driving out to a difficult place, and that's no problem for us.

## A few miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

Here is where the local M1 matters, under 50 miles from Cranwell.

It will usually get you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it is smoke, an uneven idle and power falling away — not a neat stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Get off at the first safe exit, turn off, and don't start the car to move it.

On a longer run — anything close to the under 15 miles to the closest city — take it the mixture has been through the filter, the pump and the fuel injectors, and mention it when you call. It affects what our technicians bring.

Out there happy, back sluggish. If that was the run to Home Park Plantation, look at the tank. Diesel gets weakened by petrol, and thin fuel seeps past the fine tolerances supposed to build injection pressure — so every additional mile the diesel Nissan Qashqai covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere safe, switch off, phone us.

## A bit about Cranwell

Cranwell is a village in Lincolnshire, situated inland at an elevation of 51 metres, with detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Cranwell lies approximately 14 miles south of Lincoln and 106 miles north of London, placing it in a relatively rural setting. Cranwell is surrounded by nearby villages such as Leasingham, Brauncewell, and North Rauceby, and has a population of around 993 residents. Cranwell's location allows for easy access to the nearby city of Lincoln and the surrounding countryside.

## The call-out in Cranwell, step by step

- The answers change the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting: what was put in, how much of it, and if the engine has run.

- The contaminated mixture comes out of that tank.

- Fuel lines are purged through and the fuel filter cleared, leaving nothing in the fuel system that caused any of this.

- The fuel system gets bled, on fresh diesel.

- It is run with clean diesel in it, and our engineers make sure that it is running correctly.

From there, you're ready to pull away.

We do everything wherever your car has stopped, which means it never has to be taken to a garage, and when it has been caught quickly, it is very unusual for there to be lasting damage.

Why so direct about leaving the keys alone? Since the pump is before the fuel injectors, and a wearing one sends whatever it gives off onward with your fuel. Call us. Leave the Audi A4 close to Saint Andrew's.

## Cranwell AdBlue removal is a separate matter

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first step is unchanged — your engine stays off — whereas this fault underneath it is a different one altogether.

Petrol thins the diesel and takes away the lubrication your fuel system depends on.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it causes rust and deposits instead.

Our engineers handle both, and AdBlue removal around Cranwell has its own page with the detail — including why it is often the more significant of the two.

A throttle gone soft, white smoke, a lumpy idle, clattering: that's a misfilled diesel Ford Focus telling you what's wrong. Don't start the car to find a better place — turn off where you have stopped, close to Cranwell Village Hall or anywhere else.

## Cranwell costs for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

Honestly, no single figure fits on a page like this. This job changes. Here is what varies it:

- This is the main one: whether your motor has been started, or driven.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.

- The kind of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.

- Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there is safe for a van.

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm instead of as a range.

For the car at home that is going nowhere and isn't urgent, is fine too.

## Cranwell motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

## I am on a forecourt in Cranwell. Can you drain it here?

Yes, and it's where a big share of this work happens.

Often, provided the site consents: BP, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that place is something we answer straight away.

## Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

Litres aren't the measure. Ratio is, and a lot more than either, it matters if anything has been run.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different situations, certainly. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether the fuel system has had that mix drawn through it.

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. What next?

Turn off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop.

It is fixable far more commonly than motorists assume, even though driving is what moves the problem from that tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart it.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain then flush done to a correct standard, which is no modification at all.

Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a distinct fault and it does not put back what petrol has weakened.

Petrol stays in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There's no need to bring it to a dealership, as our technicians drain and flush the car wherever it is.

## Still with the car?

The engine stays off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting the car later.

Cold, still, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. Motorists fear this much more than they need to.

On-site fuel draining around Cranwell and throughout Lincolnshire — at the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home.
