# Crimond: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens

Whatever you do, never switch your engine on, even briefly, to shift it. Stop; leave the vehicle off.

Cleared then flushed, just where it is: that's normally all an unrun diesel with petrol in it needs. Whether it remains that simple depends on the minutes ahead far more than on everything else.

From here on, step by step, for anywhere around Crimond:

## Petrol in a diesel, motor off — the first minute

Go through the following in sequence, before you do anything else.

- Keys out of your ignition. Switching your ignition on can be all it takes to prime the system, while priming draws petrol out of the tank towards the parts it harms. Leave the vehicle off altogether.

- No diesel on top. More fuel in takes away none of the petrol — it only leaves you with extra of the same blend.

- Hazards on. If you are anywhere near moving traffic, make your car easy to see before you do anything else.

- Off the petrol pump by hand. At a forecourt, ask the staff to help you push the car clear of the petrol pump. Do not fire it up to move it, however short the way.

- Which fuel, and about how much? The receipt answers both, and that's where our first question starts. Never throw it away.

Still driving when you realised? Come off the M90 at the next junction if that's where you are, over 50 miles from Crimond, and stop somewhere sensible and not pushing on to the services. Then begin at step one.

## Has it run yet? The fork in every Crimond fuel drain

Everything after this point depends on one answer.

Not run, not even briefly:

- That petrol is still in that tank and nowhere else.

- Usually it's drained and rinsed just where your car is.

- This is the best position to be in, and the reason step one matters.

If it has been started, even for a moment:

- Some petrol has left the tank by now, gone through your filter, and reached your lines.

- Run it farther and that petrol reaches the injectors, having gone through your fuel pump first.

- The job grows with the mileage — lines purged, filter sorted, sometimes more.

Why the line falls there: diesel lubricates your high-pressure pump and your injectors as it flows through them, and petrol doesn't.

Nothing is damaged by petrol that is just resting in a tank.

Move the petrol, though, and it wears the very parts that move it.

## What to have prepared when you call about petrol in a diesel from Crimond

A little preparation is the difference between a van that finds you and a van that circles.

- AB43 8 plus the remainder of the postcode makes the ideal way to start telling us where you are.

- Wherever you have pulled up, the road's name helps — whether that's Louisa Crescent or somewhere else — and so does the name of a car park.

- Car parks are located more easily by what they serve: tell us the one at Tesco, and it's simple.

- The make and model of the car, and the fact it is a diesel.

- What was put in. Petrol, or AdBlue. AdBlue is a separate job with its own page for Crimond, so tell us which.

- How long the nozzle was in, or the litres from the receipt — whichever gives us how much.

- If it's run, how far plus how hard — and whether it's run at all.

- The owner may have to authorise the work under some hire and company contracts — so it's quicker to settle whose vehicle it is before our technicians arrive.

Next, 0333 366 0103. Not urgent, your car parked at home with nowhere to be? Then will do too.

## Whilst you wait for a fuel drain around Crimond

Help, however well meant, is the thing that does the harm whilst you wait. So hold to these.

- Where the vehicle has stopped decides where you wait. Exposed: away from it, away from the traffic. Sensible: with it. Either way, safety ahead of the car.

- A kind passer-by doesn't crank it. Nor does anyone checking it still does the trick, or rolling it a couple of yards.

- Something from your boot, oil meant for two-strokes or injector cleaner: no additive lifts that petrol.

- No home-made draining. Siphoning petrol into a can at the kerbside is hazardous, and it leaves your fuel that has by now gone beyond that tank.

- Ignition remains off. Even for your radio or the windows.

## Van arrived? Your fuel drain, one step at a time

- Three queries. What went in, how much, and whether it has run. The replies decide this job, which is why the price comes after them but not before.

- Clearing it's how the blend gets taken out of the tank.

- If it ran, the lines are holding petrol that has shifted beyond the tank — so they're cleaned.

- Cleaned, or replaced if the vehicle has a serviceable one: the fuel filter is dealt with next.

- The fuel system is primed with clean diesel.

- First start on clean diesel. When bleeding is finished, the motor is fired up and our engineers check that it runs properly.

Our engineers remain until it is running on fresh diesel.

If it has been spotted early, long-term damage is very uncommon, and your car returns to normal use at once.

## Crimond, after your fuel drain: back on the road

- Once it's been started on fresh fuel, there is nothing special to do: drive normally.

- Watch the first miles. A warning light, smoke, a rough idle or a flat spot under the throttle means pull over and ring us back.

- The work may come up later with a hire company, an insurer or a fleet manager. Hold on to the documents.

- The handle's colour isn't the thing to go by next time — the label on the pump is.
