# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Crowland? Don't Start It

Never fire up your engine. While the petrol is still sitting in your tank and the motor has not turned over, a tank drain is nearly always all it needs — and that gets settled in the following few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled cars where they sit, all over Crowland and the remainder of Lincolnshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive.

Call us so we shall show you what follows after that before you try anything else.

## Now what? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

- As you drive, your pump and the injectors wear down. That's why you don't crank it, and why you do not believe it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel especially — the bit drivers get wrong — is that it drives off normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor normally cannot run at all, which stops the driver and stops the damage with them. This one lets you keep going.

- Leave your ignition be also. Diesel does two roles: it combusts, and before it ignites it lubricates that injection pump and those injectors. Petrol handles the first but not the second. Flicking the ignition on is frequently all it takes to prime that system, which pulls the petrol out of that tank and into precisely those components.

- Topping up clears nothing. It leaves you a larger tank of the same mixture, since a diesel fuel system won't handle petrol by percentage the way that guidance implies — so never pour diesel on top to weaken it. Octane is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.

- Stay where you are if you safely can. A vehicle that has never shifted is the quickest one to sort, and we'd sooner drive to an odd place than have it started. If you're parked on the verge on North Street, put your hazards on then leave the vehicle there.

- Our van showing up rather than circling depends on two things: a postcode that starts PE6 0, and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it. Get both ready before you dial.

- Three replies settle the full call-out: the stuff you put in, the ballpark measure involved, and whether anything has been turning since. The line is 0333 366 0103.

The journey in is what pulled weakened diesel through your pump. Sitting still has drawn nothing. Petrol in a diesel Skoda Octavia, left outside Peterborough all day, rests harmless in that tank whilst it waits. Call us first — before your keys come out.

## On the forecourt: removing petrol from a diesel

The job starts at a forecourt, typically. Often enough it ends there too.

Our technicians work on garage forecourts regularly, with the station's permission, so if you're still at Esso that is generally where this drain happens.

Before the engine has fired — a garage is the one place it ends up halted.

Fuel drawn out of that tank and through the fuel filter, right to the high-pressure pump, is what happens when your engine is switched on and the car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the filter and the fuel lines along with that tank. That's still not a catastrophe, and we deal with it where your car sits. What decides it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after your receipt was checked.

Staff will usually pitch in pushing it away from the pump, which lets the next motorist get through. Take the help.

Starting the car to roll four car lengths isn't.

## Areas our vans reach in Crowland

Crowland is a town, and so our team get out to the town and to the areas around it on those same runs: Nene Terrace, Stowgate, Dowsdale, Brotherhouse Bar and Newborough.

Not on the list? That tells you nothing. The names above are only the nearest few, and most places across Lincolnshire have a page of their own somewhere on the site.

Contact us and check instead of assuming, above all where you're on a border or somewhere your satnav struggles with.

The map marks the ground this page spans.

Roadside, forecourt, private drive, car park: every bit of that is ground our technicians cover, and none of that requires the car to travel to us.

How far, and how hard? The second of those counts more than the first, and so have both ready. Your Nissan Qashqai will have felt completely normal on the way back from South View Community Primary School — they all do, and that's the trap. Diesel into a petrol vehicle usually will not run at all: the person stops, and so does the wear. Petrol into a diesel starts, ticks over, pulls away like nothing happened, while the high-pressure fuel pump gets on with its work minus the protection the fuel should be giving it. No warning arrives, as behind the wheel nothing looks wrong.

## Stuck on the kerbside around Crowland

Not everybody has a sensible place to stop.

Set off, then noticed? Ended up by the verge of East Street, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazard lights on? That is a routine call here. Not an odd one.

Fine right there? Remain with it. Not okay? Climb out and away from it.

It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the problem: fire it up to get to somewhere better and that mix goes further into the system with every mile driven.

Carrying on does the car far more harm than our van driving out to an inconvenient spot, and that is no bother for us.

## So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel after some miles

This is where your A1(M) comes in — under 15 miles away from Crowland.

A misfilled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong, while the symptoms when they arrive are usually lost power, a lumpy idle and some smoke rather than a neat stop.

Take the next junction that's sensible, pull up there, and do not restart the vehicle to move it.

Long trip? Anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that arrived at by the petrol. Say that on the phone, as it alters what goes in the van.

Here's the full mechanism. Diesel needs enough body to seal the close gaps it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That's it. Which explains the ordinary The Decoy call — a diesel Vauxhall Astra, out there without a murmur and back down on power, uneven at idle, possibly a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, and so the fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; weakened, it bleeds past those gaps rather than building, and delivery comes poorer, later, less even than the engine was engineered about. Not a failing motor, though. Fuel that has stopped acting like diesel. Put that right and it stops.

## A little about Crowland

Crowland is a small town in south Lincolnshire, situated near the River Welland and close to the city of Peterborough. Crowland sits at a low elevation of around 8 metres, in an area of flat fenland that has been drained and settled over the centuries. Crowland has a mix of old and new housing, with detached homes being a predominant feature of the town's residential areas. Crowland is also close to several nearby places, including Nene Terrace, Stowgate, and Dowsdale.

## Once our engineers arrive with you in Crowland: what follows

- Our technicians ask first, price after. What went in? How much? Has the motor run? Those answers change what the work actually is.

- The tank is cleared completely.

- We clean the lines and clean the filter, so what is left in your system is not what created the issue.

- Our engineers pour clean diesel in and prime the system.

- It is started with new diesel in it, and we check that it is running correctly.

That leaves your car ready to pull away.

Our technicians do everything wherever the car has ended up, which means it never has to go to a workshop, and when it has been noticed quickly, it is very uncommon for there to be permanent damage.

About as well as this goes, once your engine has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and your diesel Audi A6 left near Trinity Bridge hardly two streets on. Phone us, and leave the vehicle off. A short drive does truly help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, and so your filter and the pump have had weakened fuel through them — hence flushing the lines instead of only emptying the tank.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, in Crowland?

Don't crank it: that first step applies whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the fault itself.

Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and removes the lubrication your fuel system relies on.

AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to rust and build-up instead.

AdBlue removal in Crowland has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it is usually the more significant of the two. Our engineers deal with both.

The slimmer petrol nozzle goes into a newer diesel filler neck with almost no resistance at all, which makes this mechanical rather than sloppy. Strange locations see most of that for that reason. So: fuelled up by Crowland Roll of Honour without thinking, in a diesel Peugeot 208 you have had for two days? Call us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars tend to get driven further before anybody notices, and miles settles how much petrol gets to your injectors.

## What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost around Crowland

What shifts the price is laid out below, because this job is not one job and we cannot truthfully put a single figure on this page.

- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, judged against how much the tank takes.

- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever got in.

- Where is it? And can a van get to it and work there safely?

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm instead of as a range.

Not urgent, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then works.

## Questions our technicians get about petrol in diesel in Crowland

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Crowland?

Yes — forecourts are where a big share of this gets done.

Routinely, provided the site consents: another forecourt nearby, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that spot is something our technicians answer there and then.

## Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Proportion decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run.

Five litres into a nearly dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been pulled right through, or has it not?

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Pull in somewhere sensible, turn off, then leave it off.

It is fixable much more frequently than drivers fear, even though driving is what moves the issue from the tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain and flush done to a correct standard, which is no alteration at all.

Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a separate fault and it doesn't restore what petrol has weakened.

Petrol remains in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no respite from it.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

Not at all. Our technicians drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a main dealer.

## You, and the car, still together?

Shut off is the way it remains.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting the vehicle later.

A parked, cold motor is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from much more regularly than people assume.

Draining misfuelled cars, Crowland and the rest of Lincolnshire, wherever they are. Roadside. Forecourt. Home.
