# Cwm: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Don't turn on your engine. While the fuel is still inside the tank and the motor has not turned over, a drain is nearly always all it needs — and that gets decided in the coming few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled cars where they sit, throughout Cwm and the rest of Blaenau Gwent, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway.

Our technicians can tell you what your next move will be. Phone — that goes ahead of anything else.

## Your next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

- Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will normally fail to run at all, and so the person stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the car starts, it ticks over, it moves off — fine enough for a couple of miles. Most people have that muddled, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So do not start it. And having started, do not believe it: the fuel system is grinding whenever you drive.

- Diesel combusts, and before it ignites it protects — the injection pump, those injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the car's ignition off too: switching it on is frequently enough to prime your system, and priming moves petrol from that tank into precisely those parts.

- Don't tip diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system won't handle petrol by percentage in the way that guidance implies, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it merely leaves you a fuller tank of the same mixture. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.

- We would sooner drive to a difficult place than have it started — so if you safely can, stay still. Nothing is quicker to handle than a car that has never moved. On the verge on Crosscombe Terrace, that means hazards on and leave it.

- Find out where you are before ringing. A postcode beginning NP23 7, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than turning up.

- Phone 0333 366 0103. Tell us what went in, roughly how much, plus whether the car has run. These three details decide the whole job.

Quarter past eight. A rushed fill on the way in. Around eleven it dawns on you, and by then your diesel Volkswagen Passat has waited outside Ebbw Vale Parkway for three hours. Ring us and keep it where it is. What is key is the drive in, since diesel both burns and — before that — protects your pump and the fuel injectors, while petrol only ever combusts. Those few miles worked your pump on a liquid robbed of a great deal of its protection, and no amount of sitting in a car park adds any of that back. Hence the question about distance instead of hours standing, and hence the advice to leave your keys where they are till we get there.

## At the forecourt: removing petrol from your diesel

Forecourts are where this job mostly begins, and where a large portion of it closes.

We work on station forecourts regularly, with the site's permission, and so if you're still at Tesco that is typically where this drain happens.

At a garage, the mistake gets halted with the motor never fired, and no place else manages it.

Fuel drawn out of that tank and through the filter, right to your high-pressure pump, is what happens when your engine is switched on and your car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the fuel filter and the fuel lines together with the tank. That is still not a calamity, and we deal with it where your car stands. What settles it is whether the key was reached for in the seconds after the till receipt was read.

The attendants will normally help you wheel it clear of the petrol pump so the next driver can get through. That is worth doing.

Four car lengths is not worth a restart.

Each start primes the fuel system and pulls more of that blend out of the tank and toward your pump — which is why a motor shunted twice into a better bay has gradually turned into a bigger job than one left just where it stopped. So when we can't work next to your diesel BMW 3 Series, our technicians shift it without running it. None of that is fuss about a couple of seconds of running. Car parks like the one outside Co-op Food our engineers attend frequently, and the fuel is hardly ever the difficult part: the bay is. Motors either side, a trolley shelter behind, at times a height barrier at the entrance determining if our van can reach you at all. Tell us how boxed in you are, and which way the vehicle points.

## Coverage near Cwm

Cwm is a village, and our technicians are out to it and to the villages near it on those same runs: Waun-Lwyd, Llan-dafal, Manmoel, Victoria and Pochin Houses.

There are separate pages for the majority of towns across Blaenau Gwent, and the ones named above are simply the closest neighbours — so yours being absent from the list tells you nothing about whether our engineers come.

Presuming is the habit to skip, particularly on the boundary or anywhere your satnav struggles. Contact us to ask.

The map is the ground this page covers.

Kerbside, forecourt, drive, car park: the lot is territory we work on, and none of that needs the vehicle to travel to us.

## Broken down by the kerbside near Cwm

The chance to pull in somewhere suitable doesn't come to everybody.

Hazards going at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge on Mill Terrace as you realised after setting off — our engineers take that call often enough that it's the normal kind.

Remain by the vehicle while it's wise to be inside, and clear of the vehicle when it's not.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags that blend further into the system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why the motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere safer.

However difficult the place, it is no trouble for us to get to it, and that is a lot better for your car than carrying on.

## Some miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

The local M4 is the one which counts here, and it runs under 15 miles from Cwm.

Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a clean stop. Power drains away, the idle goes lumpy, and there may be some smoke.

Do not restart it to reposition. Come off at the next sensible exit then switch off.

Long drive? Anything approaching the under 15 miles to the closest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that reached by the mixture. Say that on the call, as it alters what goes in our van.

Nothing is getting worse whilst it stands. Whatever the diesel Ford Focus did on the way to Super Tubing (Closed), it's doing none of that now: your pump is not turning. So take your time — but do not drive the car home to buy yourself any.

## Cwm itself

Cwm is a small village in Blaenau Gwent, situated on the banks of a river at an elevation of 216 metres. Cwm has a mix of housing types, but is predominantly composed of terraced homes. Cwm is located near several other small villages, including Waun-Lwyd and Llan-dafal, and is approximately 13 miles from the city of Newport. Cwm remains a relatively small community, with a population of around 1767 people.

## What our technicians do when our technicians reach you in Cwm

- The answers shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing: what got in, how much of that, and if the motor has run.

- Out goes the contaminated mixture.

- What is left in your system shouldn't be what created the issue, so the lines get flushed and your filter cleaned.

- Fresh diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets bled.

- When it is started, our engineers make sure it runs properly on fresh diesel.

That leaves the car ready to pull away.

There's no need to go to a garage at any stage, as the work is all done where the car is, and when it's spotted soon, permanent damage is very uncommon.

Calling from near Tirzah Baptist Church? Three things help us. The filler — which side of the vehicle it's on. Room for a technician alongside you, without the road being blocked. And whether anything has run since the fill-up. The place itself barely matters: on-street is where we work most, and we'd much rather have a narrow space than a car a person has driven somewhere simpler. Then it's a drain for the Vauxhall Astra, a filter change where there is one worth changing, lines flushed, fresh fuel put round the entire system. By now the worst of that is in your lines and not the tank.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, in Cwm?

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — the motor remains off — whereas the problem beneath it is a separate one altogether.

Petrol dilutes the diesel and strips the lubrication the system depends on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus build-up.

Both are ours. There is a separate Cwm page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Hire car or company car? Phone them before you ring us — some agreements want the hire firm to authorise the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal faster than sorting it later. Then phone us about the Citroen C3 by Cwm Library, and do not worry that you can't say how full the tank was. Almost no one can, in a motor they picked up two days ago, and our engineers work it out there. The reason our technicians ask is that petrol in a diesel does its harm as a ratio: the same few litres in a nearly empty tank is a far stronger blend than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it resists igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger that mix, the more it rattles, smokes and goes flat.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Cwm?

Frankly, no single figure belongs on a page like this. This job changes. Here is what moves it:

- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, measured against how much the tank holds.

- Which was put in: unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can our van reach it and work there safely?

Tell us the car, the quantity and whether it has run, and you will get a firm answer rather than a range.

If it's not time-critical — your car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Cwm drivers

## At a petrol station in Cwm, can you do a fuel drain there?

Plenty of what our technicians do takes place nowhere else. So yes.

We visit Gulf and the other forecourts around town regularly, with the site's consent — tell us which one you are at when you call and we'll tell you if our engineers can work there.

## Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

It hinges on the ratio rather than the litres, and a lot more on whether your engine has run.

What determines how much work is required is if that mixture has been sucked through the fuel system — since though five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct situation from five in a full one, either way that's the query.

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What now?

Stop somewhere sensible, turn off, and leave the vehicle off.

Driving moves the issue along — out of your tank, into your pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely useful thing left to you is not restarting the car.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

No. Carried out properly, draining and cleaning is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it.

What's likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the motor to stay off.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a distinct problem and it doesn't restore what petrol has thinned.

Your pump still has to live with it, as your tank still has petrol in it later on.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

You do not need one. The car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a dealership.

## Standing next to it?

Switched off is the way the car remains.

Turn it off somewhere safe and leave it off, if you have already driven it.

Cold, still, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. People fear this a lot more than they need to.

At the roadside, on the forecourt or at home — on-site fuel draining in Cwm and across Blaenau Gwent.
