# Dafen: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens

Pause, then leave the engine off — not on, and not for a second to shift it.

Has not been run? Then petrol in a diesel will usually be a straightforward drain-and-flush job wherever your vehicle has stopped — and no other factor decides that more than these next few minutes do.

What follows is the sequence from this point, anywhere around Dafen you happen to be.

## Engine off: minute one with petrol in a diesel

Do these before anything else, in this sequence.

- The ignition off, keys out. Switched on, your ignition can prime the system — and priming is what moves petrol out of your tank into the parts it damages.

- No diesel on top. More fuel in takes away none of that petrol — it only leaves you with more of the same mixture.

- Make the vehicle simple to see before anything else — hazard lights on — if there's traffic going past anywhere close to you.

- Off the petrol pump by hand. At a forecourt, ask the attendants to help you roll the car clear of the pump. Do not crank it to shift it, however short the way.

- Hold on to the till receipt: the grade and the rough amount are printed on it, and they're what our engineers ask about first.

On the M4, under 5 miles from Dafen, the next exit is the place to come off; anywhere, the first safe spot to stop. Don't press on to the services. Then go back to step one.

## Each Dafen fuel drain starts here: has your motor run?

What comes next rests on one answer, and just one.

If your motor hasn't run at all:

- Just your tank has petrol in it for now.

- Usually it is drained and purged just where your car is.

- This, here, is the best position to be in, and the reason step one counts.

If your engine has run, even for a moment:

- From the tank, through the filter, into the fuel lines: that's how far the petrol has got.

- The high-pressure fuel pump as well as your injectors see it too on a longer run.

- The farther it went, the larger this job — the lines, the filter, and sometimes more besides.

Diesel keeps the high-pressure pump and your injectors protected as it runs through them. Petrol gives them nothing, and that's why the line is drawn there.

Nothing is damaged by petrol that's only sitting in a tank.

As soon as it is pumped, petrol starts wearing down whatever moves it.

## Dafen, petrol in a diesel: have these ready before you call

A technician that circles versus a technician that finds you: a little planning is what separates them.

- The ideal start is a postcode — one beginning SA14 8 — for where you have stopped.

- The road or the car park. A road name is a help — Llys Cilsaig, or wherever you have pulled up.

- Car parks are found most easily by what they serve: say the one at The Food Warehouse, and it is simple.

- Make and model of the car, and the fact it is a diesel.

- What got in. Petrol, or AdBlue. AdBlue is a separate job with its own page for Dafen, so tell us which.

- The quantity: the receipt's litres, or else how long you held the nozzle in.

- Whether it's run. And if it has, how far and how heavily.

- The owner may have to authorise the work under some hire and company agreements — so it is faster to settle whose car it is before we get there.

Ring 0333 366 0103 once you have got that ready — or, if the car is at home, going nowhere, use .

## The wait for a Dafen fuel drain, and what to do in it

In the wait, the harm comes from well-meant help — so these count.

- Your safety comes before the car. Somewhere dangerous? Get away from the traffic then wait away from it. Safe where it is? Stay with it.

- Not to roll it a couple of yards, not to check it is all right, not for a passer-by's favour: no one starts it.

- No additives. Two-stroke oil, injector cleaner, anything from your boot — none of that takes that petrol back out.

- Emptying it yourself is not the answer: a can of siphoned petrol on a verge is a danger, and your fuel beyond that tank remains where it is all the same.

- Leave your ignition off — the windows and your radio included.

## Van arrived? The fuel drain, one step at a time

- Three questions. What went in, how much, and whether it has run. Those replies set the job, which is why our quote comes after them but not before.

- Clearing it's how the blend gets taken from that tank.

- The fuel lines are flushed. If it ran, the petrol has shifted beyond that tank, and your lines are carrying it.

- Where the car has a serviceable filter, it is replaced; otherwise, cleared.

- Fresh diesel in, and the system primed.

- Starting it. After the system is primed with fresh diesel, our technicians fire it up and check it runs correctly.

Only when it's running on new diesel do we go.

The car goes back to normal driving at once, and lasting damage is very rare when it has been caught early.

## After the fuel drain: back on the road in Dafen

- Started on clean diesel, it needs nothing unusual of you. Simply drive normally.

- Give the first miles your attention. Smoke appearing, a warning light coming on, your idle going lumpy or the throttle hesitating: pull over then call us back.

- The paperwork covers the question a rental company, fleet manager or insurer may ask: what work was carried out. File it.

- Next time, check the pump. The label, not the colour of the handle.
