# Darvel: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Don't turn on the engine. While the petrol is still inside your tank and your engine has not yet been started, a tank drain is almost always all it takes — and that's settled in the following few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled vehicles where they stand, across Darvel and the rest of East Ayrshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive.

Our engineers can tell you what the next stage will be. Contact us — it happens ahead of everything else.

## Your first five steps: petrol in a diesel

- Do not crank it — and do not rely on it when it fires up. Here is the part people have wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol motor given diesel typically just won't run, and so the person stops and the wear halts with them. A diesel fed petrol typically starts, idles and moves off just fine for several miles. It is not okay. It is wearing out the fuel system while you drive.

- Diesel ignites, and before it burns it protects — that injection pump, its injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the ignition alone as well: switching it on is frequently enough to prime the system, and priming draws petrol from the tank into exactly those parts.

- Don't water down it. Diesel poured on top gets rid of nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The type makes no difference.

- We would much rather come to an awkward place than have it started — so if you reasonably can, stay put. Nothing is simpler to handle than a car that has never moved. On the verge on Cross Street, that means hazards on then leave it.

- Get your position ready before you dial. A postcode beginning KA17 0 and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it is the difference between the van arriving and the van circling.

- What got in, roughly how many litres, and whether the engine has run — those three replies shape the entire call-out. Ring 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

## On the forecourt: removing petrol from the diesel

Forecourts are where this work usually kicks off, and where a big part of it closes.

We operate on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the station's permission, so if you're still at the nearest petrol station that's usually where the drain happens.

At a forecourt, it is spotted with the engine never run, and no place else manages that.

Everywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was fired up and driven to get there, which means fuel was sucked from that tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure pump. That's not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still sort it out where it sits. It does mean the lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as the tank, and that's determined by the few seconds between checking the receipt and reaching for the key.

The staff will normally offer to push the car away from the pump so the next customer can get by. It is worth doing.

Starting it just for four vehicle lengths? Not a chance.

Simple, these ones, and the reason is the mileage: a mile at gentle throttle pulls hardly any diesel. Petrol into a diesel Volkswagen Passat somewhere around Darvel, a boot packed with shopping, and you stuck outside Co-op — call us. Exiting that space isn't worth a restart. That tank gets cleared where it waits, the fuel lines cleaned, new diesel in, and you drive home.

## Service near Darvel

Being a riverside town, Darvel has a frequent visit, and its neighbours round about come with it on the same journey: Priestland and Newmilns, Greenholm and Gilfoot, Sornhill.

Our technicians do come. Those places above are just the nearest neighbours, and a page exists for the majority of towns around East Ayrshire, so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage.

Contact us and enquire rather than guessing, especially where you're on the border or somewhere a satnav can't find.

That map shows the area the page spans.

All of that is territory our engineers cover: a kerbside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You never bring your vehicle anywhere.

## Roadside call-outs across Darvel

Not everyone has a suitable place to pull over.

Hazards going at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge beside West Main Street as you noticed after setting off — we take that call regularly enough that it is the normal kind.

Safe right there? Wait with it. Not fine? Move out and clear of it.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags the mix further into your fuel system — and oblige it usually will, which is why your engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere safer.

Pressing on causes the car far more harm than our van heading out to a difficult place, and that is no trouble for us.

A diesel Ford Focus parked in the parking area at the pub in the village holding a tank full of petrol in it is a straightforward job, right up till somebody takes it home. Leave the car overnight and phone us first thing. Nothing worsens whilst it waits. What we will want to know is if the trip there was brief and chilly, as that's where petrol is slowest to burn correctly — and anything that does not burn can work past the rings then into the engine oil.

## So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel after a couple of miles

This is where your M77 matters, under 10 miles away from Darvel.

It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it is smoke, a rough idle and power draining away — not a tidy stop. Misfilled diesels seldom give you one of those.

The next safe exit is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone.

Assume the worst of that on a long trip. Anything close to the under 25 miles to the nearest city, and the petrol has been through the filter, through the pump, through the injectors. Say so when you ring. What our technicians bring differs.

Diesel has to be heavy enough to seal the tightly fitted parts it flows through, and petrol dilutes it. That's the entire process, and it explains the usual Morton Park call: a diesel Mercedes E-Class that went out there without fuss and came back down on power, lumpy at idle, possibly smoking a little. A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically — it requires your fuel to hold pressure, not only to burn — so when the fuel weakens, pressure that should build then stay built starts leaking past tolerances instead, and the motor gets a weaker, later, less even delivery than it was designed around. No part of that is your engine failing, which is the bit worth hearing: it is your fuel no longer acting like diesel, and it stops when the fuel is corrected.

## Where is Darvel?

Darvel is a town situated on the River Irvine in East Ayrshire, with a mix of semi-detached housing and other residential properties. Darvel sits at an elevation of 104 metres, near the communities of Priestland, Newmilns, and Greenholm. Darvel is located approximately 17 miles from Glasgow, making it a commuter town for those working in the city. Darvel has a population of around 3701 people, according to recent estimates.

## Once we arrive with you around Darvel: what we do

- We find out what went in, how much, and if the engine has run. The responses alter the work, which is why we ask before pricing.

- We drain that tank of the polluted mixture.

- What is remaining in your system should not be what started the issue, so the lines get rinsed and the fuel filter cleared.

- Fresh diesel goes in, and then the system gets bled.

- When it is fired up, we make sure it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

From that point, you're ready to set off.

Lasting damage is very uncommon when it has been caught early, and as all of this is done where the vehicle is, it never needs to go to a workshop.

Off the forecourt, receipt read, a couple of hundred yards, left near The Dagon Stone. For a diesel Audi A3 whose motor has turned, that's about the best version there is. Call us, and let the vehicle stand with the ignition alone. Short helps, truly — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and the filter has had thinned fuel through it, and so has your pump. Which is why the lines get flushed and not just your tank emptied.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Darvel is a different job

Never start it: that opening instruction holds whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is this fault itself.

Weakened diesel, and no protection left for the system that relies on it. That's petrol.

Rust and build-up are what a diesel tank gets instead, because AdBlue is urea in water.

Both are ours. There is a separate Darvel page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Hire car or company car? Call them before you phone us — some agreements want the hire firm to authorise the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal quicker than sorting it later. Then phone us about the BMW 5 Series close to Darvel Town Hall, and do not worry that you can't say how full your tank was. Almost nobody can, in a motor they picked up two days ago, and our engineers work it out on the spot. The reason our engineers ask is that petrol in a diesel does its damage as a ratio: the same few litres in a nearly empty tank is a far stronger mixture than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it resists igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger the mixture, the more it rattles, smokes and goes flat.

## What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs in Darvel

Our engineers can't put one number on this page honestly, since the job is not one job. What shifts it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.

- The kind of liquid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can a technician get to it and work there sensibly?

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear instead of as a range.

Not time-critical, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Darvel motorists

## Fuel drains on a Darvel petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it's where a good portion of this work happens.

Often, provided the site agrees: another forecourt nearby, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that spot is something our engineers answer on the spot.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Proportion decides it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run.

What settles how much work is needed is if that mixture has been drawn through the fuel system — since though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different matter from five in a full one, either way that's the question.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Switch off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop.

Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does shift the problem out of your tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains fixable much more frequently than drivers expect.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, clearing and rinsing is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one, which is another reason to leave the vehicle turned off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

Two-stroke oil solves a different problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No.

After that? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You do not need one. The vehicle is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

## Still with your car?

Keep it switched off.

If you have already driven it, pull in somewhere sensible, turn it off and leave it off.

Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. Motorists fear this far more than they need to.

At the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home — on-site fuel draining in Darvel and across East Ayrshire.
